Guided by self-determination theory, the present study sought to (1) construct a scale of English learning motivation in a particular Chinese context, the Intrinsic /Extrinsic Motivation Scale of English Learning (I/EMSEL) and (2) explore the relationship between intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation and English achievement. The I/EMSEL scale was administered to two samples of first-year non-English-majors. Factor analysis of the results revealed a multidimensional construct composed of motivation for knowledge, motivation for challenge, internal fulfillment regulation and external utility regulation, together explaining 53.3% of the variance. Pearson correlations and multiple regressions were then performed between different kinds of motivation and English achievement. Results indicated that autonomous extrinsic motivation correlated positively with intrinsic motivation and achievement, while controlled extrinsic motivation correlated negatively with them. The results were discussed from the aspect of self-determination theory and the reference to their relevance in the EFL classroom.
An Investigation of English Learning Motivation among Chinese Undergraduates and Postgraduates
Asian Journal of Applied Linguistics, 2017
This paper employed Dörnyei's L2 Motivational Self System to investigate the correlation between motivational variables and L2 English learning, both within and between undergraduates and postgraduates. 210 university students (including undergraduate and postgraduate students) from two mainland Chinese universities completed online questionnaires and 7 of them were interviewed based on the L2 Motivational Self System. The results showed that students at both undergraduate and (post)graduate levels of study had a generally favorable disposition toward English learning, although the higher the education level of the student, the higher the importance of the Ideal L2 Self domain (and the notion of Instrumentality-Promotion within this domain) for English learning. Significant correlations were also found for undergraduate students between English learning achievement and Ideal L2 Self, as well as English learning achievement and Attitudes to L2 Learning, suggesting the clearer L2 self-image and more positive L2 learning attitude an undergraduate has, the higher the level of achievement in English learning they are likely to obtain.

Non-English Major Students ‘Motivation in English Classrooms: Evidence from a University Setting
International Journal of Educational Technology and Learning, 2021
In learning and teaching English as a foreign language, motivation is crucial to success. The purpose of this study is to discover whether non-English-majored students are motivated in learning English and to find out what factors can help motivate them to learn English. The study mainly employed a questionnaire which is developed and administered base on Khau and Thach (2021)’s framework to collect the data. It was delivered to 54 non-English-majored students who are at their third year of study at a public university in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The results highlighted various researches that have been conducted on the elements that influence motivation. The data showed that the participants’ motivation level is at medium rank. It could be inferred that these participants were motivated to learn English at university. The current study also found that students’ motivation was mainly affected by four factors which are teacher’s personality, teacher’s methodology, facilities for st...

A decline in number of credit hours of English courses for English-majoring students at National University of Mongolia is forcing teachers and students to focus on how to learn English more effectively and what factors would affect that process within credit hours allowed at the university. However, the English teaching class hours in Mongolian secondary schools have been increasing for the last few years, due to the interest in learning English as a foreign language, and resulting in a growth in the demand for English teachers. This study has a goal to investigate into motivation of English-majoring students towards learning English and the factors affecting them to be demotivated. Twenty students studying English as a major at National University of Mongolia, Erdenet School completed the research questionnaire which intended to discover English learning motivation through 12 items and attended focus group interview with 5 questions to find internal and external demotivating factors in 2019-2020 academic year. The students had instrumental orientation and demonstrated a strong desire to learn English. Furthermore, they were demotivated by their teachers' and classmates' attitudes and living conditions. The researchers suggested some recommendations based on the study findings.
The University Student’s Motivation Level on Learning English
European Journal of Social Sciences Education and Research
This study aims to determine the university students’ level of motivation in terms of different variables. A study group of this research has been designed through one of the non-random sampling methods, Using appropriate sampling, 606 students from Faculty of Education of C.U. have been involved in this study. Motivation scale in English Language Learning developed by Mehdiyev,Usta,Uğurlu (2015) was used as an instrument of data collection. T-test and one - way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to resolve problems of this research. As a result of the research the motivation level of university students hasn’t been revealed significantly different regarding to the gender variable. However, considering the t-test results of motivation scale dimensions, confidence, attitude and personal use, significant difference is seen in favour of women in personal use dimension. The level of language learning motivation of female students is higher than men’s regarding to personal use dimens...

This study examined the motivation of Chinese mature students toward learning English. The participants in the study were ten Chinese mature learners, of whom four were English majors and six were non-English majors. Each underwent a semi-structured interview. Their responses were then coded and analyzed based on Matsuzaka-Carreira’s motivation framework. Furthermore, the Keyword Extraction and Link Terms techniques of PolyAnalystTM were used for further analysis. The results showed that English majors tended to be goal-oriented, and non-English majors were more likely to be means-oriented. English majors were identified as having additional integrative motivation. The factors influencing the motivation of English majors were more diverse than those influencing their non-English major counterparts. The obvious distinction between the two groups was their attitude towards the target language and culture. These findings suggest that instruction for adults should be aligned with mature...
A Questionnaire-based Study on Chinese University Students’ Demotivation to Learn English
English Language Teaching
This paper, adopting questionnaire survey method, investigated 367 non-key local university English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students’ demotivation to learn English. The collected data revealed that there were two main categories of demotivators: internal factors (lack of intrinsic interest, experience of failure and lack of confidence, and unclear study goal) and external factors (teaching material, teaching process and teaching content, significant others, teachers’ teaching competence and attitude of teachers, the relationship between teachers and students, teaching facilities and teaching environment). External factors are found to be more influential than internal ones in the participants’ demotivation to learn English. The current study adds to the literature in that unclear study goal is an important demotivator in Chinese local non-key university EFL students’ English study. The findings of this study will enrich the research of demotivation to learn English, and to provi...
Motivation to Study English of Non-English Majored Freshmen
European Journal of English Language Teaching, 2021
Motivation is regarded as an influential factor in the success of any activity. It plays a significant role in reaching the desired goals, including learning English. This research aims to analyze the students' motivation and factors affecting their motivation to learn English. The population of this study was 326 freshmen in nine faculties of natural sciences at Tay Do University. The quantitative data was collected through the questionnaire and analyzed by SPSS software. The results show that the students had motivation to learn English, but their motivation levels were not high. Additionally, the students had both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. However, the latter was higher than the former. Moreover, the results also indicate factors affecting learners’ motivation. The research findings contribute to improving English teaching and learning quality in Vietnam in general and in Tay Do University in particular. Article visualizations:
Cross-grade analysis of Chinese students' English learning motivation: a mixed-methods study
This mixed-methods study investigated the changes in Chinese students' motivation to learn English from elementary to high school and explored the reasons for these changes at different school levels. A motivational questionnaire was designed and administered to 3,777 elementary, junior high, and high school students, and followup interviews were then conducted with nine students in order to investigate their perceptions of their motivations. Seven subcomponents of motivation were identified. The statistical results revealed that junior high school students had the highest learning motivation, followed by those in elementary school and those in high school. The interview data indicated that parents' positive influence on students' English learning motivation was greater for junior high school students compared to elementary and high school students. Furthermore, the pressure of the college entrance examination had a negative influence on high school students' motivation to learn English. Based on the findings of this study, suggestions for further research are provided.
