Contributing Factors of Capital Structure: A Case of Non-Financial Companies Listed at KSE 100
Review of Economics and Development Studies, 2018
The current study has taken the firms listed on KSE (Karachi Stock Exchange) now called Pakistan stock exchange. The data for the said purpose is collected for five years of time period from 2005 to 2010. The results obtained demonstrate that all the selected variables under study shows a highly significant impact on the determinants of capital structure except the tangibility of the asset. The insignificant relationship of tangibility with the capital structure supports the financing hierarchy theory. While the Growth, Size and profitability shows a significant and negative relationship with leverage. The negative relationship of growth shows that higher the growth of the firms lower will be the leverage maintained by the firm. Similarly, firms with smaller size show that such firms prefer high leverage as compared to firms of larger size. The results reveal that higher the profitability of the firm lower will be the leverage ratio. While the positive relationship of the volatili...

Purpose This study examined the effect of leverage, debt maturity on corporate financial performance of non-financial firms listed at the Pakistan Stock Exchange. Targeted population of this study was 100 firm listed at PSX as KSE-100 index out of which 74 non-financial firms were selected from 28 different sectors for the period of 5 years 2013 to 2017. Design/Methodology/Approach: Financial performance measured by ROA, ROE, while leverage, short term leverage, long term leverage taken as independent variables, four variables were taken as control which are size, current ratio, sale growth, tangibility. On the basis of Hausman test, results of random effect model were found appropriate. Findings: ST and LT Leverage have a negative significant and insignificant effect on financial performance (ROA) respectively, moreover long term leverage has a positive and significant but short has a negative and insignificant effect on ROE. The results of the control variables showed that size has a negative and significant effect on ROA and ROE, whereas current ratio has insignificant and negative effect on ROA, ROE. Sale growth has a positive and insignificant effect on firms ROA and ROE. Tangibility has insignificant and negative effect on financial performance. Implications/Originality/Value: This study is consistent with traditional trade-off theory and recommended that management of the non-financial firms listed at the PSX should employ minimal debt level or use an optimal level of capital structure and also to attract good management thus to improve their financial performance.
Extension of determinants of capital structure: Evidence from Pakistani non- financial firms
AFRICAN JOURNAL OF BUSINESS MANAGEMENT, 2011
This study tried to determine the influence of set of explanatory variables on the capital structure determination for Pakistani non-financial firms by using panel data. This study also finds the applicability of two capital structure theories (pecking order theory and trade-off theory) in Pakistani non-financial sector. This study used five previously studied variables (profitability, size, growth, tangibility of assets, non-debt tax shield), and added three new variables (tax, liquidity and payout), which were not used previously in Pakistani context. This research used data from 336 non-financial firms over the period of 5 years (2005-2009). This study used fixed effect random model regression analysis to analyze determinants of capital structure. The results showed that industry type play important role in determining capital structure. The results showed that out of eight variables five (size, tangibility of assets, non-debt tax shields, liquidity and payout) are statistically significantly related to leverage, remaining three are statistically insignificantly related with leverage. Two expected relation are accepted while six are rejected after empirical analysis. This study identifies that industry type, liquidity and payout ratio play important role, whereas tax does not play important role in identifying capital structure Pakistani non-financial firms.
DETERMINANTS OF CAPITAL STRUCTURE: A CASE OF LISTED PHARMACEUTICAL AND CHEMICAL FIRMS OF PAKISTAN
IAEME PUBLICATION, 2020
Financing decision by the firm is considered to be an important decision because of its influence on the riskiness of the firm and firm value. Financial researchers around the world have shown deep interest in finding out what determines firm capital structure. The aim of the paper is to analyse the critical factors that influence the financing decisions of the firms listed in the chemical and pharmaceutical sector of Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), Pakistan. Financial data from 2008 to 2015 was used in this study. Fixed effects model was used to analyse the influence of independent variables on the dependent variable. The findings of the study revealed that taxes, non-tax debt shields and tangibility of assets significantly influence capital structure decisions. Moreover, taxes, growth opportunities and non-tax debt shields are positively related to leverage whereas profitability, liquidity, firm size and tangibility of assets are negatively related to leverage. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to find the relationship of capital structure decision with the performance of the firms in the developing market economies like Pakistan.Methodology: Pooled Ordinary Least Square regression was applied to 36 engineering sector firms in Pakistani market listed on the Karachi Stock Exchange (KSE) during the period 2003-2009.Findings: The results show that financial leverage measured by short term debt to total assets (STDTA) and total debt to total assets (TDTA) has a significantly negative relationship with the firm performance measured by Return on Assets (ROA), Gross Profit Margin (GM) and Tobin’s Q. The relationship between financial leverage and firm performance measured by the return on equity (ROE) is negative but insignificant. Asset size has an insignificant relationship with the firm performance measured by ROA and GM but negative and significant relationship exists with Tobin’s Q. Firms in the engineering sector of Pakistan are largely...
DETERMINANTS OF FINANCIAL LEVERAGE: AN EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE FROM PAKISTAN STOCK EXCHANGE
IAEME PUBLICAITON, 2021
The current study aimed to investigate the impact of several factors i.e. profitability, tangibility, size, growth, financial risk, liquidity, tax shield on firm’s financial leverage. The data was collected for a panel of 83 companies from 6 high performing sectors of Pakistan stock exchange from 2006 to 2016. The results of panel data analysis were compared for random effect, fixed effect and pooled regression models. The findings revealed that Profitability, Tangibility, Firm Size, Liquidity, Tax Shield and Tobin’s Q had a significant role in leverage decision of the sample firms while financial risk, business risk and growth were found to be insignificant. The fixed effect model was found to be more appropriate to explain the relationships. The implications of the results were also mentioned
Determinants of Capital Structure across Selected Manufacturing Sectors of Pakistan
2011
The present study examines the industry specific attributes of firms in Automobile, Engineering, and Cable and Electrical Goods Sectors affecting the determinants of capital structure and validates the results with Booth et. al. (2001) and Rajan and Zingales (1995) .The study uses pooled data regression model on the sample of 22 Automobile, 7 Cable and Electrical Goods and 8 Engineering Firms to identify the determinants of capital structure. The debt to total assets ratio is used as a proxy for leverage and the impact of size, profitability, tangibility of assets, cost of debt, taxes, liquidity and non debt tax shield is analyzed on leverage. It is pertinent to report that the study uses liquidity, tax and cost of debt variables which were not used in the earlier studies conducted in Pakistan on industry specific attribute of capital structure and have significant influence on debt financing decisions. The empirical results reflects that firms of these three sectors with good liqui...
This study investigates the effect of firm specific factors on capital structure decision (leverage)for a sample of 19 firms of power and energy sector of Pakistan. The secondary data is extracted from the "Balance sheet analysis" for the period of 2001-2012 of the 19 firms which are listed on Karachi stock exchange. Generalized least square method, correlation analysis are employed on panel data and results revealed that profitability having negative and significant relationship with leverage while tangibility positively related with leverage but not significant. Firm size and firm growth both are also positively related with leverage and also significant. Our results also show that large firms do long term financing through debt as compare to small firms of power and energy sector.
Affect of financial leverage on firm performance. Empirical evidence from Karachi Stock Exchange
Mpra Paper, 2013
Using panel data analysis, we attempt to find the determinants of capital structure of KSE listed none-financial firms for the period 2004-2009. We first present some descriptive statistics on our selected variables. The most interesting finding of our descriptive statistics is the highest leverage ratio for textile industry whereas the average profitability of textile industry is negatives. The results of this study shows negative relation between performance and leverage. Long term debt is more expensive due to certain direct and indirect costs. Therefore employing high level of debt results low profitability. The result of second hypothesis shows no significance between leverage and profitability. On the basis of these findings it is concluded that profitability is consistent with picking order theory. In the light of above discussion we can say that the existing theories of capital structure contribute to some extent in decision making process.
