Also, the new media was found to represent an auspicious attempt to tackle the problem of cultural diversities in IPR by enhancing the emergence of global village of cultural mutuality. On the negative side, the new media presents for the IPR practitioner a new problem of poor Internet penetration in many developing countries making it difficult for the practitioner to reach all his publics via the new media. In the same vein, the new media poses for the International PR expert the challenge of contending with the anonymity of many of his publics hence exposing him and his organization to all sorts of mischief possibly coming from the unscrupulous ones. The Impact of New Media on Intercultural Communication in Global

The rapid development of new media has been the main force accelerating the trend of globalization in human society in recent decades. New media has brought human interaction and society to a highly interconnected and complex level, but at the same time challenges the very existence of intercultural communication in its traditional sense. It is under this circumstance that we see more and more scholars becoming involved in the investigation of the relationship between new media and intercultural communication. Emerging topical areas in this line of research mainly include three categories: (1) the impact of national/ethnic culture on the development of new media, (2) the impact of new media on cultural/social identity, and (3) the impact of new media (especially social media) on different aspects of intercultural communication (e.g., intercultural relationships, intercultural adaptation, and intercultural conflict). This paper discusses this trend of research on the relationship between new media and intercultural communication. [China Media Research. 2012; 8(2): 1-10]

Intercultural Communication and the Media: A Study of the Effects of Globalization and New Technologies

Linking Business and Communication From a Sparkle to a Flame, 2018

Intercultural Communication, also referred as cross-cultural communication, is an interdisciplinary field of studies that focuses on how people from different countries, cultures, or backgrounds communicate with each other and that looks for ways to make people communicate more effectively. This study aims to emphasize the gradually increasing need for intercultural communication theory and practices within the framework of mass media, social media, and interactivity. After a brief introduction regarding the concept of intercultural communication and how it has evolved as a key term for globalization and global businesses, the impact of mass media and rising new media technologies on intercultural dialogue will be explained in detail. This study intends to focus especially on intercultural communication and the media. With the rise of globalization, it is no longer possible to consider it as a merely economic or technological process. Increased interaction among people from different parts of the world, free flow of information throughout the web, and cultural interdependence are all signs showing that globalization has a cultural level that is rather difficult to cope up with. Throughout the study, effects of globalization and rising new technologies will be explained in detail regarding the issues and challenges that await to be handled within the framework of intercultural dialogue and the changes the media has undergone.

Rethinking some issues in international communication in the era of fast-growing social media platforms

Rethinking some issues in international communication in the era of fast-growing social media platforms

News flow, news imbalance, media and cultural imperialism are some of the core issues/concepts in international communication in the recent past. This paper interrogates these core issues/concepts in the face of the fast-growing social media platforms. A review design was adopted with library and internet materials as part of the source of data used in this paper. It is held that the easy accessibility of the social media platforms in which messages or contents speedily cut across national boundaries and enables individuals, governmental and non-governmental organizations from both the North and South poles to project their ideologies has slightly clampdown the lopsided flow of information or media contents. The same factor has also redefined the issue of media and cultural imperialism in the international circle. It is observed that new media platforms have become potent for globalization or speedy dissemination of international news content around the world as against the mainstream or conventional media such as radio and TV. The paper however argues that for the social media to strive more in international communication, administrators of these platforms must devise a means to uphold ethical issues..

Online Media and Intercultural Communication

Facta Universitatis, Series: Philosophy, Sociology, Psychology and History, 2017

The emergence of the Internet has led to tectonic changes in all aspects of human life, and certainly the most important ones occurred in communication and information. The term "Global Village", which was first used by Marshall McLuhan in his "Report on the project of understanding new media" in 1960, seems to be more current today than ever. The emergence of online media, social networks and many other applications has enabled people to connect and communicate no matter where they are on the planet. However, despite all the positive effects that communication networks have brought with them, there are many negative aspects of intercultural communication that have been retained to the same or even greater extent, creating the so-called "noise" or disruption of communication. One of the best examples of this is the comments in the online media. This an essential segment of online journalism, and it proved to be a fruitful intercultural communication channel, which is why this paper will put special emphasis on the readers' comments.

Localizing Global Political Matters Through New Media: Some Reflections on Communication Culture

Baltic Journal of Law & …, 2009

This paper seeks to reassess the potential of new media in transnational political communication. It questions whether a wide availability of online news sources offering diverse views could become useful means in overcoming national (cultural and geographic) barriers in reporting about global political matters. The discussion here moves on several levels of analysis. First, it draws attention to the impact of the Internet on political communication. By relying on results obtained from research studies in international (European) news communication, it also stresses the significance of contextual factors (local political, economic and cultural conditions) in transnational political communication. The paper proposes that the Internet and social media applications (blogs, social forums) may help journalists as well as citizens to retrieve background information on complex issues of global character. Simultaneously, such online communication where common interests of citizens are recognized and addressed in less formal manner may help different audiences to develop a sense of transnational understanding which could enrich news and views communicated. On the other hand, this paper also stresses that there is no universal culture of communication; instead, all characteristics of communication are related to different political, economic, social and cultural conditions where these traditions, values and norms have developed and are sustained. The paper concludes that the communication of global political matters involves two conflicting paradigms of globalization and localism. Both of these paradigms must be adequately addressed in the analysis of the role and functions of the Internet in communication of global political matters to local audiences.
