Influence of Home Environment on the Academic Performance of the Students in Some Selected Schools in Dekina Local Government Area in Kogi State, Nigeria

This study investigates empirically the influence of home environment on the academic performance of the students in some selected schools in Dekina Local Government Area in Kogi State, Nigeria. The study was anchored on Charles Darwin Social Theory and Theory of Parent Involvement. The researcher used mainly primary data from a sample of 120 respondents obtained by the use of a well-structured questionnaire. The data collected were analyzed using multiple linear regression analysis. The probability value of the estimate was used for accepting and rejecting the hypotheses of the study. The result of the regression analysis indicates that a positive relationship exist between parents' economic status (PES) and Students Academic Performance (SAP) in selected schools in Dekina Local Government Kogi State, Nigeria and the relationship is statistically significant (p<0.05). A positive relationship exist between parents educational background (PEB) and Students' Academic Performance (SAP) in selected schools in Dekina Local Government Kogi State, Nigeria and the relationship is statistically significant (p<0.05). Parental marital style (PMS) was negatively related to Students' Academic Performance (SAP) in selected schools in Dekina Local Government Kogi State, Nigeria. Home location of parent (HLP) was positively related to Students' Academic Performance (SAP) in selected schools in Dekina Local Government Kogi State, Nigeria and the relationship is statistically significant (p<0.05) and in line with a priori expectation. It was concluded that parents' economic statuses, parental educational backgrounds, parental marital Styles, and home locations of parents all do have varying degrees of effects on the performance of students in the study area. It was recommended among others that illiterate parents should be encouraged to go to school, in that their literacy will enhance their children academic achievement in schools.

A STUDY OF ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN RELATION TO HOME ENVIRONMENT OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Parents are an essential part of their Childs environment. Adults need to have a positive view of them (self concept) and serve as role model for their children. Self awareness is another key part of child's development. This is why the parents' ability to provide wings is so important. In order to succeed, children need to gain confidence in their abilities and gain a sense that they can do things on their own. The precious time between birth and maturity gives parents many opportunities to balance roots and wings. Parents can lead the way in providing experiences that enhance their children view of themselves. This way parents can builds self esteem in their children and themselves in order to improve the quality of their lives and strengthen family relationship. Home environment not only influences the academic achievement but also affects the mental condition of a child. On one hand, congenial home environment supports a child to maintain a good mental health and uncongenial home environment forces her to develop several unpleasant mental conditions, like, tension, anxiety, stress etc., which leads to her poor academic performance. HOME ENVIRONMENT ACTS AS A VITAL FACTOR IN STUDENTS' ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT

The aim of the study is to find out the relationship between academic achievement and home environment of high school students with reference to gender, type of family qualification. In the present study normative survey method was employed and t achievement of the high school students (X standard students), the board examination total marks is taken into account and for the assessment of Home environment, the tool was validated by Aaliya Aktar and Dr.Shail Bala Saxena (2013). For the purpo school students were selected through stratified random sampling technique. The results reveal that the level of academic achievement and home environment of high level. There exists is a significant relationship between the environment of high school students.

This paper investigates the influence of parenting styles on the students’ academic achievement in Junior Secondary Schools in Ogun state, Nigeria. The study adopted descriptive survey with the sample comprising three hundred and ninety (390) Junior Secondary Students III (JS3). This was selected through random sampling technique from thirteen junior secondary schools in Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun State. Two null hypothesis were formulated and tested at 0.05 alpha to guide the study. A questionnaire titled “Parenting Styles and Students Academic Achievement Questionnaire (PSSAAQ)” was used as instrument for data collected. Data collected were analysed using t-test. The study showed that there was a significant difference between the academic achievement of students from democratic and autocratic parenting homes. Also, a significant difference exists between the level of involvement of parents of male and female students in their education. The paper established the importance of parenting style in the achievement of students. This implies that school alone does not determine student’s achievement but a collaborative efforts of home and school. Therefore, the study recommended, among others, that parents should make homes’ children-friendly and stop discriminating on sex grounds. The school management was also advised to involve parents and guardians in the academic and moral developments of their wards.

This paper examines the effect of family structure on the academic performance of university students in Nigeria. The sample for the study consisted of 240 students drawn from the six randomly selected faculties in Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State. The adapted form of "Guidance and Counseling Achievement Grade Form" was used for data collection and the data collected were subjected to statistical analysis using the t-test statistical method. The three null hypotheses formulated were tested at .05 level of significance. The results showed that significant differences existed between the academic performance of students from single-parent family and those from two-parent family structures. The results also indicated significant differences in academic performance of male and female students compared on two types of family structures. On the basis of these findings, it was recommended that school counsellors should be employed in all schools and that they should provide necessary assistance to students especially those from single-parent family to enable them overcome their emotional concerns. The Population consisted of 972 respondents. A sample size of 100 Senior Secondary Schools (SSS) 1, 2 and 3 students was randomly selected. Three research questions and three hypotheses were adopted and tested for the study. To determine the extent of significant relationship that existed between the independent and dependent variables at 0.05 alpha levels. Chi-square (X 2) was employed to analyze the data and reliability of the instrument. The result revealed positive relationship between parents socio economic status, educational status, parents level of income, family size and students' academic performance. Based on this finding, it was recommended that parents should improve on their level of Socio economic status, endeavor to control their family size, government should equip the schools with modern facilities, teachers should use good teaching methods, teaching aids and guidance and counseling department should be established in all schools. Effects of Family Structure on the Academic Performance of Children: A Case Study of Ayeduase R/C Junior High School in the Kumasi Metropolis, Ghana

In today's competitive global setting, pupil's performance is an important element of the school's achievement. Pupil's performance can significantly be affected by range of variables. Researches depict family structure as a salient variable. This study looked at the family structure of Junior High School pupils in Ayeduase Sub-Metro of Kumasi and their academic performance. The objectives were to assess the difference in relationship between the academic performance of children from single-parent families and two parent families and also to determine the difference in parental involvement in children's academic performance. The research utilized a case study of 80 J.H.S. students in Ayeduase Sub-Metro, Kumasi between the ages of 12–18 years who were sampled by using stratified sampling technique. The sample consisted of all J.H.S 1, J.H.S 2 and J.H.S 3 students in order to maintain reliability. Chi-square test of independence was used in testing the first research hypothesis which was to determine the relationship between children in single-parent families and two parent families (family structure) and the dependent variable (academic performance). The result of the study indicated that, there was no significant difference in relationship between children from single-parent and two parent families (family structure) as independent variable and academic performance of pupils (p=0.791) as the dependent variable. The finding of this study provided evidence that family structure indicated no significant effects on academic performance of children. The study recommends that further studies should be carried out to include other family factors. Chi-square test of independence was used in testing the second hypothesis which was to determine the difference in parental involvement in children's academic performance. The result of the study also indicated that, there was a significant difference in parental involvement in children's academic performance (p=0.223).

Academic Achievement of Primary School Pupils: Investigating Home Environment Factors Contributing to Low Academic Performance

Home environment factors affect the mental and psychological capability of the learner to attain academic feats. This study investigated home environment factors contributing to low academic performance in primary school pupils in Ghana focusing on the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Primary School in Kumasi. Home environment factors include socio-economic status, parental style and family size. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected from 120 learners and 60 parents of the institution using questionnaires and interview respectively. The results revealed that a significant number of pupils described their homes as not conducive for learning and this was largely attributed to the parental socio-economic status. Again, lack of parental involvement negatively influences the academic work of learners.
