The Theoretical Landscape of Service Design
Lecture Notes in Computer Science, 2015
This conference paper discusses the theoretical landscape of service design. It will illustrate how service design is situated in a discourse on design research and outline the theoretical background of this multidisciplinary approach from a constructive and generative research perspective. In this paper, the foundation for the conceptual service design framework is based on current debates in the field. Identification of the conceptual framework is based on an analysis of co-creating service design cases that were implemented at the Service Innovation Corner (SINCO) laboratory at the Faculty of Art and Design, University of Lapland. The conceptual framework presents five themes that are closely connected with service design: (1) design research, (2) value co-creation, (3) user experience, (4) learning, and (5) citizen engagement. Using the perspective of service design, this paper attempts to elucidate the effects of service design on development and innovation processes in private and public sectors.
IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology, 2013
The current crisis conducts companies to seek new solutions for growth. In this context, the still new field of Service Design (SD) is gaining more and more attention. Easy to use and based on collaborative processes, it enables to achieve quite quick results. However the SD process is mastered by few actors inside organizations. There is a need to scale up the process to the whole organization. To achieve that goal, SD needs to undergo an industrialization process. What's more, doing SD projects is not enough to change a company. SD has to be linked to transformation strategies. This paper introduces a dedicated framework which is based on four basic components all along the Service Design process: Knowledge, Software tools, Communities and Places. The paper mainly focuses on the first two components. It will be illustrated with a complete demonstration during the session.
Service Design-a conceptualization of an emerging practice
2011
Service design is an emerging design practice with an interdisciplinary heritage. Most previous research has been based on what service designers do; with the increased academic interest in service design over the past decade, the time has come to conceptualize the underlying discourses. The main purpose of this thesis is to contribute knowledge to the emerging service design discourse through conceptual comparisons of key concepts in the design and service management literatures.
A Theoretical Framework for Studying Service Design Practices: First steps to a mature field
The research is the first-phase of an ongoing 6-months Art and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) funded scoping study into the contribution of Design for Service Innovation and Development. The creation of the theoretical framework, drawn from a literature review is a first step to a Service Design priori knowledge, to conduct and produce six case studies from the public, commercial and digital sectors. This paper will present the initial formulation of the theoretical framework as part of the case study methodology to guide the ongoing data collection and analysis of the six Service Design projects; leading to and supporting the survey study of Service Design innovation practices from a wider sample of design studios and designers working in the UK and internationally.
Envisioning and evolving: Future evolution of the concept and the practice of service design
2018
Service Design is evolving from an emerging field, breaking new ground in the design and service research areas, to a more mature stage, developing a set of fundamental concepts, methods and principles that can provide the foundation for its further significance and impact in both research and practice. This paper reflects on the roots and recent evolution of service design in terms of fundamental concepts, methods and outcomes, taking into account the papers in the Envisioning and Evolving track. It considers how the growing interrelation with close fields of service research is introducing useful “contaminations” and reports how the Service perspective is revealing its potential to bring life to technical and entrenched systems. It goes on to argue that design should aim to bring services to life to prove its real, distinguishing value and contribution.
A framework for innovative service design
The Service Industries Journal, 2016
Drawing on research from design science, marketing and service science, our paper provides an integrated framework for evaluating and directing innovative service design. The main goal of our review is to highlight the strengths of existing frameworks and to suggest how they can be enhanced in combination with design science principles. Based on our review, we propose a new framework for the design of innovative services that integrates several key paradigmatic approaches and identifies fundamental open research questions. Our approach is unique as it combines three service disciplines, namely services marketing, service science, and design science, and provides a new framework that describes step by step the procedure that needs to be taken and the conditions that need to be met for developing innovative services. We believe that providing such a framework is a valuable addition to the literature.
Design for Cross-Sectorial Service Innovation - Provisional Framework
2014
Design and service innovation have received increasing attention in recent years. However, there is no agreed view on what the relation entails. Both management and design research literature acknowledge the importance of design for service innovation. However, most of the research fails to bridge the gab between differing notions of design thinking and emerging design fields. The lack of research linking the two discourses calls for investigations that provide clarity and mutual understanding. This paper seeks to make a step towards a common ground by presenting a provisional framework of design for cross-sectorial service innovation. Emphasis is given to common terminology and characteristics. Focusing on the design discourse, this paper discusses the relationship between design and service innovation as a set of certain approaches, experiences and minds-set. The study is based on a review of key texts and indications from a set of interviews. This paper constitutes a work-in-prog...
