The Bread of Life Discourse John 6:25-59

2018

The sixth chapter of the Gospel of John is especially well-known among Bible readers. It narrates the famous miracle of Jesus feeding the five thousand, of Jesus walking on water, and the Bread of Life discourse. In particular, John 6:25-59 significantly contains the first mention of Jesus' sevenfold "I am" statement in which Jesus uses the bread of life imagery to reveal who he was. This study paper is an attempt to interpret the passage by looking at its historical and literary context, its meaning for the biblical audience and not least, how we can apply it today.

This paper explores the Bread of Life discourse in John 6:25-51, emphasizing Jesus’ portrayal within the context of Jewish culture and festivals. By examining the Jewish elements of the Gospel of John, particularly the role of Jewish feasts, the study aims to illuminate the significance of Jesus’ actions and teachings. The discourse occurs against the backdrop of the Jewish Passover, highlighting Jesus as the true bread from heaven. A detailed exegesis of John 6:25-51 reveals a structured dialogue between Jesus and the crowd, centering on themes of belief, divine provision, and eternal life. The analysis situates this passage within the broader narrative of John’s Gospel, showing how Jesus reinterprets Jewish traditions to reveal his divine identity and mission. Through this interpretive lens, the paper underscores the continuity and divergence between Jesus’ teachings and Jewish religious expectations, ultimately presenting Jesus as the fulfillment of Old Testament promises.
