Social Change in Eastern India

This article is related to the study of the formation of the famous Kalapahad tradition of Eastern India. It highlights the process of the construction of the tradition for transmitting a message of social change in Eastern India in the pre-colonial and colonial phase. But after its construction which demanded reform of Hinduism and prevention of conversion it had many modifications in the 19th and 20thcentury A.D. In the expanded form of this tradition on Kalapahad reconversion to Hinduism was articulated. While historians ponder over the many secrets of the Kalapahad tradition literary figures-poets and playwrights consider this tradition as a story of radical protest and social reconstruction

TWO SAINTS AND A DOCTOR: A SCIENTIST LOOKS AT THE SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION OF KERALA

As a scientist, my task is to look for patterns, especially in unexpected events, and formulate hypotheses or theories that provide an explanatory basis. One of the most remarkable events that took place in recent Indian history was the social transformation of Kerala over a period of one hundred years. How, and why did this happen? I propose three agents as being prime movers on this.

Factors Responsible For Social Changes in India

We are already familiar with the concept of social changes and the theories associated with it. The abstract idea of “social change” evinces dimension of some of the characteristic of a group of people. If any action which affects a group of people who shared values or characteristics can also be said as “social change”. Change takes place in all human societies and at all times. Sometimes, it is sudden as when a revolution occurs to replace the old order. At other times, it is gradual and hardly perceptible. If change does not occur on its own, it may be induced by certain factors. Therefore, it is important for us to study these factors which either give impetus to or resist change. In this term paper we are going to study about the factors of change.

This paper is about gender politics in Delhi’s urban villages in transition. It explores the gender differentiated ways in which men and women of Delhi’s urban villages have experienced the shift from peasant subsistence economy to capitalist urban economy, the implications this has had for gender relations and family dynamics and whether the shift has transformed the relations of men and women of dominant castes with those of other (lower) castes and communities inhabiting the villages. It argues that patriarchal codes of mobility, honour and sexuality, though far from disappearing, are changing. Men and women seem to be strategically employing the tropes of ‘urban’/‘rural’, ‘modern’/‘traditional’ to justify their attempts at wresting some power for themselves as they attempt to reconstitute their masculinities and femininities in these urban villages in transition. The paper is primarily based on an ongoing gendered ethnography of one such urban village in present-day South Delhi.
