The Impact of Computer Literacy among Secondary School Teachers in Rivers State

This study assesses the impact of Computer Literacy among Secondary School Teachers in Rivers State. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The proportionate stratified random sampling techniques was adopted in this study in obtaining 194 teachers in the state owned secondary schools of Obio/Akpor LGA of Rivers State. The reliability coefficient of the instrument was determined using Cronbach Alpha reliability test, with value of 0.84 obtained. The data collected were analys n in answering the research questions, while t-test was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of this study indicate that the computer literacy level of the secondary school teachers was high, the impact of their computer literacy knowledge was low, and the stated factors affect the computer literacy programme in the state schools. Based on this findings, it was recommended that teachers should use the knowledge of computer in the teaching and learning process, in service training, seminars, workshops and conferences should be organized regularly by professional bodies and government on computer literacy programme, host communities, PTA and government should provide for the schools and teachers with computers and ICT centres, and incentives should be given to teachers to enhance their knowledge on the use of computer in education through soft loans.

Perceived Competence of Nigerian Secondary Schools Teachers in the Use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

One of the numerous goals of Nigeria as a nation is to aggressively promote ICT as an instrument of mass education, growth and development (NEEDS, 2004). There is no doubt that teachers are indispensable for successful teaching and learning with ICT and their competence in the use of ICT is crucial to successful implementation of contemporary school curriculum. This study therefore examined teachers’ perceived competence in the use of ICTs with respect to computer basics, use of the internet, and their ability to use simple softwares. A research question and three hypotheses were raised for the descriptive survey study. The instrument used for the study was the ICT Competence Questionnaire (ICTCQ). Simple random sampling technique was used to select 300 public secondary school teachers in the four geo-political zones in Ogun State. Frequency count and percentages were used for the research question while chi square was used in analyzing the hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level. Findings indicated that; • Most teachers in Ogun State secondary schools do not have the required competence in ICT. • Those teachers in the humanities have more competence in ICT than teachers in the sciences. • Academic qualification of a teacher does not have any effect on teacher’s competence in ICT. • Teachers’ competence in the use of ICT is not influenced by their teaching experience. It is then evident that the present crop of teachers needs to be retrained to improve their competence in ICT usage. Consequently training of teachers in ICT through seminars and workshops organized by state government should be regulated to termly schedule as against occasional exercise that is prevalent presently. The government should increase the supply of computer system to schools and also make provisions for their maintenance. Internet facilities should also be put in place for schools by the government and credit facilities can also be provided for teachers by the government to encourage individual teacher to have personal computer. KEYWORDS: ICT Competence, Subject Specialization, Educational Qualification, Teaching Experience.

Knowledge and Extent of Utilization of ICT Skills in Teaching by University Teachers in Nigeria

This study investigated the knowledge and extent of utilization of ICT skills in teaching by university lecturers in Nigeria using a descriptive survey research design. The population of the study was targeted at all the teachers in Nigerian universities. Out of these, Google forms automatically collected responses online and analysed them without indicating the sample size. The sample was stratified randomly into ranks of respondents and gender. A 58-item questionnaire named University Lecturers' ICT Knowledge and Skills Selfassessment Questionnaire (ULIKSSQ) was developed and given to ICT staff for validation. It was then administered to teachers in the universities using online Google forms. Data collected were analysed and presented using simple percentages, pie charts and bar charts. Where the figures were not very clear enough, tables were used as support to present the results. Findings revealed that the university lecturers expressed high level of knowledge and skills in using ICT in teaching to the extent of 81.3%. Areas where their ICT knowledge and skills utilization were low including marking students' scripts, keeping track of students' performance, using wizards to create reports and adding animation to power point presentation among others. Based on the findings, it was recommended that universities should regularly organize ICT related training for lecturers to improve their skills particularly in the areas where they demonstrated low competencies in the use of ICT for teaching and learning purposes.
