The Iranian-French project resumed its archaeological work on the site of Pasargadae in the latter half of 2015, the capital founded by Cyrus the Great in the center of the ancient province of Persia. It is the first step of a program that will span over several years and during which we will gradually enrich the Pasargadae archaeological map on a large scale. In the continuity of the previous 1999-2009 programs, we tried to have a better understanding of the layout of the Achaemenid city that was developed following a new pattern where the garden, the park, plays a prominent role. We also would like to further study the territorial changes just before the Achaemenid Empire as well as after its fall until the Islamic period. To approach these topics we gather a pluridisciplinary team that carried out complementary survey works (geophysics, topography, fieldwalking, surface ceramic collection, geoarchaeology) to build a comprehensive reconstruction of the Pasargadae cityscape from the early Achaemenid to Islamic periods. The works were performed inside the protected area of the site as well as in its nearby surroundings. This article presents our methodology as well as our preliminary results. The important 2015 achievements were to demonstrate that the south Tol-e Taḵt hillslope is built, to firmly show that the Achaemenid/post-Achaemenid occupation extended southeast of the Royal Garden and to shed light on the ancient settlement system some kilometers north of the city core part. In the same time an important topography work has been started to accurately document the whole visible archaeological features over the site. The main fallout of these surveys is to bring to light parts of the Cyrus project for Pasargadae as well as the complex and evolving landscape of the site and its territory before and after the Achaemenid period.

This article reports on the 2016 activities of the second campaign of the ongoing Iran-France archaeological project at Pasargadae and its surroundings. The main goal of this project is to reveal and analyze the Achaemenid cityscape and regional management integrated into the long occupation history of the area. In 2016, new insights on the site and its territory were provided by data coming from newly implemented approaches: surface ceramics analyses, aerial survey and remote sensing, and palaeoenvironmental studies. We also extended our large-scale mapping of the site through combined topographic and geophysical survey approaches. The systematic mapping of the archaeological landscape, settlement pattern and funerary remaining around the site was also continued. We also present some preliminary results of pollen and sediment analyses of the filling deposits in the large basin which delaminates the Pasargadae Royal Garden to the southeast.

Questioning the Scarcity of Archaeological Sites of the Achaemenid Period in Iran: An Archaeologist's View or a Reality

Achaemenid Studies Today. Proceedings of the Mid-Term Conference of the Societas Iranologica Europaea held in Naples, 2017, December 11-13 Edited by Gian Pietro Basello, Pierfrancesco Callieri and Adriano V. Rossi, 2023

In memory of David Stronach Looking at a distribution map of Achaemenid period sites in Iran leaves the reader rather disappointed. Apart from the well-known Royal residences at Pasargadae, Persepolis, Susa and to some extent Borazjan, the rest consist of a few sites ranging from pavilions or compounds (Qaleh Kali, Dahan-e Ghulaman), some areas found with column bases of Achaemenid style, and very few settlement sites corresponding to villages or small fortifications. The preliminary and certainly not complete inventory that I offered in 2003 (Boucharlat 2005), complemented by W. Henkelman (2012) for the Fars province, has hardly been enriched 15 years later. The map of the Achaemenid period sites in Iran is still rather poor in comparison with the previous Iron Age, particularly well represented in Northwestern and Western Iran. Several multi-period surveys mentioned some Achaemenid period sites but were not numerous compared with earlier and later periods. Moreover these sites are rarely described or illustrated. In some other provinces of the Achaemenid empire, archaeological surveys and excavations have been conducted in the past few years. The case of the South Caucasus is particularly significant. Florian Knauss since 1999 (and particularly Knauss 2005 and several of his more recent papers with his colleagues) revealed the abundance of élite Achaemenid sites in that area (Karacamirli first, as well as Gumbati, Sari Tepe, Samadlo, etc.). This period of occupation is confirmed by reports and articles on other settlement sites in Azarbaijan, such as
