Learner Autonomy: How Teacher Trainers Understand and Apply?
2015
In last decades, being autonomous language learners has been the spotlight of researchers and accepted as crucial and worth to think carefully about it's' applications in teacher training institutions. As a consequence, the Ministry of Education in Turkey always emphasises the learner autonomy in their language curriculums and official documents related to language learning. Even in European context, especially in CEFR, it is also stressed that to learn a language, an individual should be autonomous and monitor his own language learning process. Autonomous learning has been defined by Holec (1981, p.3) as "to determine objectives, to define the contents and progressions, to select methods and techniques to be used, to monitor the procedures of acquisition and to evaluate what has been acquired". One of the results taken into account is being autonomous learner while learning a language really helps and speeds up learning process. In this context, the main question of the study is "What are the views of academics working in an English Language Teaching (ELT) department about 'learner autonomy' and how they implement it in their classes?". This study was designed as a basic qualitative research. The study group was consisted of six teacher trainers of ELT department of a state university in Turkey. Results indicate that teacher trainers know the importance of autonomy, value it and try to implement and foster it. They also thought that they are supporting students to become autonomous and to some extent they are successful in doing so in spite of difficulties.
Learner Autonomy as Strategy to Enhance the Quality of Learner
2020
The aim of this research is to measure the effectiveness of learner autonomy as a strategy to enhance the quality of learner. In designing a dynamic and quality learning, it is necessary to design an appropriate strategy to achieve the goals. For that reason, the class environment should be designed to bring autonomy learning for learners. The autonomy learning itself has a close relationship with the ability of learners in expressing, becoming more creative, having self-esteem, understand conceptual learning and love to be challenged. The method used in this research is the descriptive method, with a sample of 20 students from the German Language education program as the analyst unit in 4th-semester batch 2018/2019, which had been selected randomly. The data had been collected through questionnaires which consist of five aspects namely; motivation, planning, perform, surprise and evaluation. The result of the research indicates that there is a significant correlation between Learne...
Learner Autonomy: Concept and Considerations
Journal of NELTA, 2011
Give me a fish and I eat for a day. Teach me to fish and I eat for a lifetime."This proverb taken from Chinese culture is associated with learner autonomy. Once learning used to be the matter of receiving the body of knowledge which could then be used for the rest of life. But such view has been nonsense in this fast-paced world. Therefore, the learners should be provided with the skills necessary for the lifelong pursuit for knowledge. This article begins with the general concept of autonomy and goes on to consider different aspects of autonomy. It insists that learner autonomy does work in any culture provided that the teacher also has autonomy to some extent and curriculum is designed accordingly. While it highlights that total autonomy is neither feasible nor desirable in formal language learning contexts, it argues that learner autonomy is necessary for making someone lifelong learner.

Learner autonomy has been the concern of a number of researchers in English language teaching. The concept has begun life since the 1980s. It has been considered in the Moroccan EFL context among the priorities of education, which English language teachers try to implement in their classes. Studies revealed that there are correlations between learner autonomy and other variables related to learners, which makes autonomy a subject of interest and thus an ability that should be fostered. As such, the present study aims at investigating the extent to which secondary EFL teachers promote autonomy in their learners. To achieve this purpose, a quantitative research design was employed in the study, generating and analyzing quantitative data. Therefore, a sample of 96 (57 males and 39 females) EFL teachers completed the questionnaire. Drawing on the findings, it was found that EFL teachers promote learner autonomy to a great extent and that the results were conclusive among the teachers’ r...
The Role of Teacher Autonomy in Learner Autonomy
The Role of Teacher Autonomy in Learner Autonomy, 2015
The goal of this paper is to gain a deeper understanding of the role of teacher autonomy in the development of learner autonomy. Firstly, the general attributes of autonomous teachers are identified. Next, the teacher's role in scaffolding and learner support was emphasized through the illustration of regular weekly homework assignments and learner goal-setting practices. The conclusion indicates that learner autonomy is an essential element for successful learning and the teacher's gradual withdrawal from the learning process is needed in order to foster autonomous learning skills in students. Promoting Learners` Autonomy Through Individualized Learning
Lingua Cultura
Article basically tries to explore the concept of individualized learning applicable in teaching learning process which can enhance learners’ autonomy and provides a brief practical guidance on how to put this concept into classroom practices. There are at least five underlying assumptions of learning based on this concept, namely: different learning styles, a variety of sources, teacher as facilitator, integrated learning tasks, and different learning goals. It can be concluded that classroom practices designed based on these concepts can improve learners’ autonomy, such as grouping, projects or tasks, and discussion.

This chapter explores teachers' perceptions of learners' readiness to adopt autonomous roles and to develop their critical and analytical thinking. The chapter reports on an ethnographic study investigating teachers' views on whether the notions of learner autonomy and critical and analytical thinking can be developed in the Libyan cultural context. The reason behind this exploration is that Libyan culture is one of the Middle Eastern cultures in which some educationalists believe learner autonomy to be inappropriate. The study's findings suggest that notions of autonomy, critical and analytical thinking, and creativity can well be fostered in the context of this study.

Fostering Learner Autonomy in Educational Settings
International Journal of Multicultural and Multireligious Understanding
There is an old proverb which says “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime”, the connotation of the proverb is to help somebody do something on his or her own; this can be a perfect basis for teaching a language. Autonomy is a concept which transcends beyond learning and is not only limited to educational settings. When people exert independence in their work, new horizons will be opened to them and they will be more susceptible to succeed in their lives. Teachers are not available throughout students’ lives; therefore, students must learn how to learn and how to be independent from their teachers. In today’s world with Corona pandemic in most countries, though many students receive off-line contents from their teachers, if they do not accept responsibility for their own learning, no fruitful upshots will be gained in their studies. Thus, it is mandatory for students to know what to learn and how to learn; in other words, ...

Initial activities become important as the stepstone to raise students' autonomous level. The study aims to explore lecturers' initial activities to encourage students' autonomous learning. Autonomous learning is a process to be apprehensive of taking control of literacy. This study used a case study and a content analysis in the qualitative exploration. The English teacher educators at the English language education department, the faculty of teacher training and education in Pekanbaru became the research samples. A qualitative approach is chosen as exploration design with the help of Nvivo 12 Apps since interviews come as the main instrument. Some interview points questioned how lecturers help learners comprehend the material, determine their particular pretensions, chancing out supporting coffers. The study reveals that the lecturer's exertion as the initial activities were giving the material explanation, giving information about the course figure, giving assignments, giving what students need, giving provocation or motivation, sharing experiences, making personal approach, exercising, being a Model, making agreement letter, warning, having a concession, having references of material, participating gests, checking students' appreciation by reviewing, giving question and test. Yet, giving assignments collectively or in collaboration, systems or incidental test becomes a proposed exertion in the initial process to enhance learners' autonomous.
