Ayurvedic Management of Chronic Liver Disease (CLD) –An Analytical Review

Liver controls our whole body activities. Liver cirrhosis is a most common medical problem today. One and the chief cause of it is chronic alcoholic consumption. Excessive and prolonged use of alcohol affects every organ of the body. Although liver, heart and kidney are most affected due to heavy consumption, alcohol induced liver cirrhosis is a life threatening condition in maximum cases. More than 50% people of in India rely on Ayurveda and herbal medicine for liver diseases. More than three hundred herbo-mineral preparations are available in Ayurvedic system of medicine for the treatment of jaundice and chronic liver diseases. Ayurveda plays a master role in the fast and safe recovery of damaged liver. Liver Disorders and Potential Medicinal plants: A Review Study

Liver is a large organ that maintains metabolic functions and detoxification processes in the body. Liver disease occurs throughout the world irrespective of age, sex, region or race. According to World Health Organization, about 46% of global diseases and 59% of the mortality is because of chronic diseases and almost 35 million people in the world die of chronic liver diseases. Liver and its dysfunctions are highly defined and well described in Ayurveda in relation to pathogens (dosha), tissues (dhatu) and its development. Liver disorders include a group of diseases of the liver and biliary system. There are no any complete, safe and effective remedies available for liver disorders. Treatments used are found to give only symptomatic relief. A number of herbs, classical and significant formulations in various dosage forms are mentioned in Ayurved classics for liver diseases. The details of experimental and pre-clinical studies conducted on single and compound Ayurvedic preparations for their efficacy against liver cancer and other hepatic ailments are also important. They strongly emphasize Ayurvedic products as a scientifically feasible medical practice and an unconventional entity. But well planned clinical trials to establish the safety and efficacy is the need. Ayurvedic medicine has an opportunity to develop new drugs and contribute as safe and cost effective treatment for Liver disorders. In this paper, authors have reviewed all the liver disorders and potential medicinal plants which are scientifically proved.

Successful Ayurvedic Management of Alcoholic Liver Disease: A Case Report

Alcohol is the major cause of liver disease. Liver is an important and largest gland of the human body, it detoxifies various metabolites, synthesize various proteins and produces various biochemicals necessary for digestion. Alcoholic liver disease could be due to long term alcohol consumption, including fatty liver, alcoholic hepatitis, and chronic hepatitis with liver fibrosis or cirrhosis. Fatty liver is present in more than 90% of daily as well as binge drinkers. Although fatty liver will develop in any individual who consumes a large quantity of alcoholic beverages over a long period of time but this process is transient and reversible if timely care is taken. Clinical outcomes, histopathological patterns, and chemical analysis of Ayurveda and herbal medicine associated with severe liver injury-A single-center experience from southern India

Ayurvedic and herbal medicines (AHM) are known to cause varying degrees of drug-induced liver injury (DILI). Clinical, biochemical, histological spectrum and outcomes of AHM linked to severe DILI are not well studied. Out of 1440 liver disease patients, 94 were found to have a severe liver injury and associated AHM intake. Thirty-three patients were suspected to have AHM-DILI on Roussel Uclaf Causality Assessment Scoring Method. Forty-seven and 30 of retrieved AHM samples were analyzed for heavy metals and hepatotoxic volatile organic compounds (hVOCs), respectively. Eleven patients ingested AHM from unregistered traditional healers (UTH). Clinicopathological outcomes were analyzed in 27 patients (who underwent liver biopsy) and outcomes with respect to chemical analyses were studied in 33 patients. Recent Herbal Proprietary Preparations for Liver Diseases: A Comparative Study

Liver is considered to be one of the most vital organs that functions as a centre of metabolism and excretion of waste metabolites. A number of risk factors predispose an individual to hepatic injury and thus liver diseases. Total death worldwide due to liver diseases raised by 50 million per year over two decades, according first ever WHO Study of Liver Disease Mortality. In recent years Indian Traditional Medicines like Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani have gained importance and popularity because of their safety and efficacy in liver diseases. Several Ayurvedic proprietary liver preparations are being extensively used in Ayurveda for the management of liver diseases. About 600 commercial herbal formulations with claimed hepato protective activity are being sold all over the world. In India more than 93 medicinal plants are used in different combinations in the preparation of 40 patented herbal formulations in the form of liquid and tablet. But very little is known when and how these formulations are to be used in present practice. Out of this easily available most commonly used liver preparations Adliv, Amlicure DS, Arkaliv, Ayuliv, Hepjaun, Kamilari, Kamilari plus, Liv Aid, Livercure, Livergen, Liv 52, Livobell, Livokin, Livomyn, Livpar, Nirocil, Stimuliv, Strongliv, Terfoliv and Vasuliv are taken for the study. These preparations are classified on various basis like available market form, Herbo-Herbomineral preparations etc. Kutaki is most commonly used single drug in maximum number of preparations followed by Bhringraj, Bhui Aamalaki, and Kalmegh. Individual drugs of the preparations are studied according to Rasa, Virya and Vipaka. Uses of individual drugs as well as of liver preparations are also studied in relations with liver diseases.
