Seventh International Conference on Education and Training in Optics and Photonics, 2002
For thirty years, the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication has been teaching students in the field of telecommunications. In the academic year 1990/91, a course in optical communications was introduced. Currently, within electronics and telecommunication programmes, we offer an undergraduate course entitled: Optotelecommunications, two courses for master level specialities: Optical Networks and Advanced Fiber Optic Systems, and finally, a course for extramural students. We also provide lab projects for Computer Science and Electrotechnics students and contribute to continuous education training. Over the last ten years, a number of students participating in our laboratories has increased seven times. At present, we have two laboratories, offering 40 projects, which fall into 5 categories: basics projects, fundamental projects, applied projects, advanced projects, optical systems. Such a variety of topics allows to offer a flexible choice to suit individual student interests.

Every year, and this 41st edition was no exception, ECOC is the leading forum in Europe for keeping up with the top research advances and scientific discoveries in devices, subsystems, systems and networks in the field of optical communications and related photonic technologies. With a global attendance and delegates coming from all over the five continents, ECOC provides a unique opportunity for networking and interaction that nobody interested in the field should miss. ECOC 2015 took place from September 27 th to October 1 st 2015 in Valencia, Spain. As ECOC 2015 organizers, we believe that it is very important to keep the traditions that have contributed to its long-standing success, but at the same we tried to experiment and innovate both in the technical and social programmes. For the first time, ECOC 2015 held a young researcher's meeting and included a Rump Session to debate on the future of optical innovation; "Optical innovation, quo vadis?". ECOC 2015 also held two technical symposia, both of which were unique and special. 2015 was the international Year of Light and ECOC 2015 included a special commemoration symposium, "Light: Enabling the Global Internet Era", at which distinguished keynote speakers addressed how optical technologies have been responsible for the transformation in communications, the evolution of the Internet era as we have experienced it in the last two decades, and why they will play an ever-increasing role in tomorrow's communication networks. A second symposium on one of the hottest topic in the optical community, "Optical Communications and Networks for Datacenters", held in remembrance of our colleague Professor Harm Dorren. It was, focused on discussing the requirements, challenges and solutions for the next-generation datacenters.
The Changing Trends of Optical Communication
In the early eighties, optical communication emerged as a possible means of practical communication. However, there were many bottlenecks and short-comings on its way. There was no optical amplifier at that time. Every node or repeater used to have 3R regeneration and all the processing were done in the electrical domain. The separation between two adjacent repeaters was well within 20 km. The early trends of optical communication till the end of 1980s are shown in Table 1, which was very much different from today’s mainstream optical communication.

This paper summarizes the research activities of the optical communications group at University of Aveiro and Institute of Telecommunications -Aveiro pole. Several activities like clock recovery systems, both electrical and all optical, electrical equalizers for very high bit rate DST systems, post-detection filters for multigigabit optical receivers, soliton systems, simulation work on WDM, DST, EDFA and short pulse generation for high bit rate systems are presented.

In this contribution we present a brief summary of research activities carried out at Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT, Institute of Telecommunications) in optical communications. These activities cover various aspects related with optical components/subsystems, optical communication systems, and optical networking.
Advanced Photonic and Electronic Systems WILGA 2017

— WILGA annual symposium on advanced photonic and electronic systems has been organized by young scientist for young scientists since two decades. It traditionally gathers more than 350 young researchers and their tutors. Ph.D students and graduates present their recent achievements during well attended oral sessions. Wilga is a very good digest of Ph.D. works carried out at technical universities in electronics and photonics, as well as information sciences throughout Poland and some neighboring countries. Publishing patronage over Wilga keep Elektronika technical journal by SEP, IJET by PAN and Proceedings of SPIE. The latter world editorial series publishes annually more than 200 papers from Wilga. Wilga 2017 was the XL edition of this meeting. The following topical tracks were distinguished: photonics, electronics, information technologies and system research. The article is a digest of some chosen works presented during Wilga 2017 symposium. WILGA 2017 works were published in Proc. SPIE vol.10445.
