Virtual and Augmented Reality Technologies to Enhance the Visitor Experience in Cultural Tourism
Progress in IS, 2019
Cultural tourism has been identified as an important economic and social contributor worldwide. Main drivers have been linked to an increasing desire for cultural awareness, meaning-creation and learning. An increasing body of research explores the application of VR and AR in this context. While previous studies outline VR and AR as promising technologies to positively influence the visitor experience, these typically do not focus on how such technologies should be built to suit the context or add value to tourists. This study investigates elements affecting the tourist experience in the cultural tourism context from a theoretical perspective by discussing the impact of VR and AR technology on the visitor's learning experience. It offers contributions in the area of cultural tourism and consumer psychology, discussing tourist sites mediated by engaging technologies to enhance the visitor experience. Further research is highlighted in the area of VR and AR development through purpose-driven design
The Influence of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality Combinations on Tourist Experience
2019
Nowadays, the tourism industry requires continuous investment into new technologies, preferably for mobile use, in order to keep attracting visitors” and therefore, highlighting the need for destinations to be innovative. Therefore, such competitive environment impose the academics to make extra efforts to keep the industry on the track, so this study tries to explore the influence of combining Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality applications on tourist experience and investigate the benefits they get and the difficulties they experience while using such applications. A quantitative method was the most appropriate method for this study; a well-structured questionnaire was designed and distributed in national museum of natural history in Washington Dc. The findings reveal that Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality are promising technologies that can have wide impact on enhancing tourist experience before, and during the visits. This study recommends combining Augmented Reality and ...
Technology as Augmented Reality (AR) is applied in tourist destinations mainly museums across the world to enhance visitor experiences. AR is a technology that integrates digital information with live video displays in the user’s real time environment. AR application in museums can add relative advantages in terms of visitor experience. AR technology evidently is in application in museums in countries of the world, those typically tagged as having improved technological structures. In these museums mostly in Europe, AR plays a crucial role in knowledge sharing allowing spaces for visitor experience generation. Also, AR technology application arguably supports marketing and branding of that particular destination either by word-of-mouth recommendation or by repeat visit. The competitive advantages of AR technology application in museums suggest that this technology can possibly be replicated in countries with emerging tourism economies. This envisages Bangladesh as the instance. The country as a promising tourist destination has a considerable number of museums. Epitomizing the Bangladesh National Museum, the chapter concludes that the replication of AR technology application is a possibility in Bangladesh requiring three initial facts namely (1) lack of experts with relevant expertise, (2) display space capacity enhancement and (3) interest creation within the visitors. Keywords: Augmented Reality, visitor experiences, museum, Bangladesh, replication

Global Conference on Business and Economics (GLOBE 2019), 2019
Cultural tourism provides significant economic and social contributions to destinations, and therefore countries make great efforts to attract more cultural tourists. In order to meet the changing consumer demands and expectations in accordance with technological developments, destinations are trying to integrate cultural heritage sites into technological applications such as augmented reality. Augmented reality applications, which are defined as real-world environment gaining a physical appearance with computer-generated data, allow tourists to access the information in cultural heritage sites in accordance with their wishes and needs and to create their own experiences. When the related literature is examined; although there are many researches about current state and development of modern technologies such as augmented reality, it is noteworthy that the number of researches on subject of cultural tourism and touristic experience is limited. In this study, it is aimed to reveal the role and importance of augmented reality technologies in creating memorable experiences within the scope of cultural tourism. For this purpose, the literature about the touristic experience and the impacts of technological developments on touristic experience is reviewed and 50 AR Applications for cultural heritage sites (archaeological sites, museums and art galleries) in 11 different countries where the augmented reality technology is used are examined. In accordance with the findings, the suggestions have been developed for the cultural heritage sites to be more adapted and improved with the augmented reality technology toenhance the cultural heritage tourism experience.
