Absenteeism in Rural Primary Schools

Absenteeism refers to the practice of regularly staying away from school without good a reason. It can also refer to the habit of staying away from school without providing a genuine or any reason for not attending classes. It is a truant behavior that negatively affects the performance among pupils. Absenteeism can lead to depression and also result in poor quality of education as a result of time lost while being away from school. It could also lead to moral degradation that leads to drug abuse, early pregnancies and unruly behavior. Hence, the study aimed at analyzing the impact of absenteeism in rural primary schools in Luwingu district of Northern province, Zambia. The study was guided by the following specific objectives: (a) To identify factors influencing absenteeism in rural primary schools in Luwingu district, (b) To assess the effects of absenteeism on the academic performance of learners in primary schools in Luwingu district and (c) To determine measures that should be taken to rectify problems of absenteeism in rural primary schools in Luwingu district. Purposive sampling of the site was preferred to select the research area from which participants participated in this study with a sample size of 120. The study employed both the qualitative and quantitative methods that sampled head teachers, primary teachers and pupils from the selected schools. Interview guides were used to obtain qualitative data which was analyzed using thematic analysis while quantitative data were collected using questionnaires which were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The study found out that, learner’s absenteeism was as a result of parental poverty, lack of parental care, punishment at school, ineffective Parent Teacher Association (P.T.A), pupil’s attitude towards education and unconducive classrooms. The study therefore recommended that parents should try by all means provide their children especially those in early childhood with their basic school needs such as uniforms, books, pens, school bags and all that is needed so that they can feel comfortable and enjoy school life. Teachers on the other hand should also motivate their learners to always be in school.

This study aimed to investigate the reasons of frequent absences of pupils in school as well as the factors affecting their school attendance. The study utilized qualitative in-depth interviews among grade three pupils' parents. The factors such as poverty, social services, parent's perception towards education, and bullying affect school attendance. Poverty induced absenteeism. Parent's perception towards education motivated and had driven parents up to strive hard in sending their children to school. Bullying did not affect school attendance of pupils. Social services assisted economically disadvantaged families through giving financial aid that somehow helped in reducing the number of school absences of pupils.

Absenteeism is one of the crucial leading factors to student's failure especially prevalent at secondary day schools. According to US Department of Education, School attendance is a powerful predictor of student outcomes. In fact, irregular attendance can be a better predictor of whether students will drop out of school before graduation than test scores. For schools to excel well in Education system, the student must show up to school. The coherence between school attendance and dropout rates has significant ramifications that goes beyond the classroom. As far as Education is concerned in Rwanda and as stipulated within the policies that implies Rwanda to be a knowledge based economic country, the measures against school absenteeism should be promulgated among other barriers to performance of students in secondary schools. Therefore, this conceptual paper sought to examine the factors that militate against the act of attending regularly for students in Secondary day school whether nine or twelve years' basic education.

There are number of studies that document the importance of regular school attendance. There is a consensus among authors that absenteeism has negative implications for academic achievement as well as the social development of the child. Most of the existing studies have focused on school absenteeism among children and adolescents with poor school performance. This paper addresses this gap in research by exploring factors that are related to school absenteeism in Inclusive school. The findings indicate that a combination of institutional and individual factors shape patterns of poor school attendance in Inclusive schools.

This article highlights some of the major research findings regarding the problem of school discipline such as truancy and demonstrates why it is important that schools and communities work to prevent and reduce absenteeism. Beside that this article demonstrated the types of truant and activities done during truant against academic achievement among the lower secondary students.. The respondents for this study were 80 students from form 1, 2 and 3. They were randomly chosen as respondents through simple random sampling. The data collected is analyzed by using the Statistical Package for Social Science for Windows (SPSS 11.5) to find the mean, frequency and standard deviation by using descriptive statistics. The findings showed that the causes of truant are at the medium level and types of truant are at the low level. Activities done during truant such as helping the family, joining the negative groups, crime are at the low level and working part-time together with loafing are at the medium level.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY School performance relies on pupils' performance. The output of the pupil body will determine the kind of performance school will acquire. Therefore, the pupils are main contributors to the performance and rank of school. Low-ranking school conveys poor performance of pupils. High pupil performance will spring from attending school regularly.
The study underhand was intended to carry out in order to find the reasons and effects of low school attendance. The performance of the students due to remaining absent from the schools is a very great problem for the developing countries which are keen to achieve targeted literacy rate. The study focuses all the factors including inside schools and outside the school environment. In order to get all corner appraisal students, parents and teachers were included. Questionnaires were developed to ask the reasons of the absenteeism from all concerned figures such as teachers and parents. Thereof, the effects of the absence on the students’ performance were judged from teachers, parents and school staffs’ point of view. The study shows that there are various social and psychological problems/causes of absenteeism. Parents are ascertaining school environment, course and teachers behavior responsible for students absence and teachers and school staff are making students performance cause of remaining absent from the school.

Globally, the number of out-of-school children of primary school age declined from 99 million to 59 million between 2000 and 2013, but the world has missed the Millennium Development Goal of achieving universal primary education (UPE) by 2015. [2] There is still a long way to go before achieving UPE in some regions. The challenge is most acute in Sub-Saharan Africa, West and Central Africa, where the out-of-school children rate accounts highest, worldwide.
