An Exploratory Study to Assess the Factors Affecting Stress and Coping Strategies among 1 st Year BSc. Nursing Students of Selected Nursing Colleges at Rajasthan

Background: Stress has become serious concern in the present time. Stress is nursing education is acknowledged as one of the most important issues in the modern world. Coping is the process of the managing demands that are appraised as taxing or exceeding resource of the person. Objectives: (1) To identify the level of stress among 1 st Year BSc Nursing students. (2)To assess the factors affecting stress among 1 st Year BSc. Nursing students (3)To identify the coping strategies adopted by 1 st Year BSc Nursing students (4)To associate level of stress and coping strategies with selected sociodemographic variables. (5) To correlate level of stress and coping strategies among 1 st year BSc. Nursing students. Material and Methods:A Non-Experimental, Descriptive exploratory survey approach was used for the study. Data was collected from 81, 1 st year B.Sc. Nursing students who were studying in selected nursing colleges at Rajasthan. Non probability purposive sampling technique was used for selecting the samples. Standardized "Perceived stress scale" and "Coping behavior inventory" adopted by Sheu et al (2002) was used for collecting the data. Results: Majority (76.54%) of students were having mild stress. Highest mean score (5.53±2.09) which is (46.08%) of total score was obtained in the area of stress from the environment which falls in the category of mild stress. Majority (66.66%) of students were having moderate coping strategies. Therewas significant association between number of siblings and level of stress (15.68, P<0.05). There was highly significant association between sex and level of stress (11.79, P<0.05).Thereis moderately positive correlation (r = 0.32) between level of stress and coping strategies. Conclusion: Stress in nursing students is an area of growing concern and it may result in physiological distress, physical complaints, behavior problems and poor academic performance. Coping with stress for student nurse is dynamic and maintenance of the individual integrity. The present study revealed that students have mild level of stress and have moderate coping strategies.

For student nurses away from home, creating a support system may fall last in their list of priorities. Providing support within the academic system may involve group and individual counselling as well as direct access to resources. Creating a support system with family and friends is a primary stress reduction technique because having the ability to enjoy time away from nursing and studies supports selfcare. Nurses must prioritize their own care amid the other care they are required to provide. Learning Stress as Perceived by Students and Coping Strategies Adopted by Them to Overcome It in Selected Nursing College of Haldwani

Stress is a feeling of emotional and physical tension that can occur at any event which makes students feel frustrated, angry, nervous and anxious. Nursing students are always at risk of stress because they are being a part of skill training programme and provide direct care to the patient. Whereas, learning stress is mental distress for students with anticipated disappointment associated with failure to expected academic performance and also ignorance to the possibility of such failure. The present study aimed to compare the learning stress as perceived by Nursing students and coping strategies adopted by them to overcome learning stress in a selected nursing college of Haldwani. Nainital, Uttarakhand. Quantitative research approach with descriptive comparative design was used. The simple random sampling technique was used for selection of 94 BSc Nursing 2nd year students. Data collection questionnaire consisted of demographic variable a structured stress scale developed after focus group interview to assess learning stress, and modified CIS to assess coping strategies adopted by nursing students. The result revealed that maximum (n=36, 76.60%) of nursing students were within the age group of 18-21 year. Maximum (n=40, 81.10%) were female, most of nursing students (n=22, 46.80%) lived in hostel. Overall perceived stress of learning stress among nursing students was at moderate level. Nearly 81.10 percent students in college A fell in moderate level of learning stress whereas, college B students had 93.60 percent moderate level of learning stress. The findings related coping strategies adopted by nursing students of college A and college B were inadequate. Comparing the level of stress between two colleges, the mean and SD value of college A nursing students was 159.04±31.55 and for college B students it was 165.55±26.04, with the mean difference of 6.51 which was statistically not significant at p≤0.005. To conclude, nursing students encounter moderate to high level of learning stress and also adopted different coping strategies. However, management should take measure to overcome academic stress by taking stress management session, training on active coping and helping to eliminate maladaptive coping strategies.

Stress and coping strategies among undergraduate nursing students: A descriptive assessment from Western Rajasthan

Medical education can be highly stressful and could affect student performance and well-being. The present study was conducted to study stress and coping strategies among undergraduate medical and nursing students at a university in Saint Lucia. The study was conducted during July 2018 using the medical student stressor questionnaire (MSSQ) and the brief cope. The study was conducted using an online questionnaire. Gender, course of study, semester, nationality and age were noted. The stressors were grouped into six categories. Mean scores of individual statements and of the six categories were calculated. Fourteen dimensions of coping strategies were noted. These were grouped into problem focused, active emotional and avoidant coping. Mean scores were calculated. Scores were compared among different subgroups of respondents. Eighty-two students of the 161 students (50.93%) participated. Majority was medical students and Indian nationals. Most stressors caused only mild to moderate stress. Academic related stressors had the highest score (2.39) while drive and desire related stressors had the score of 0.94. Differences were noted among certain subgroups. Commonly used coping strategies were active coping, positive reframing, planning and acceptance. The use of some coping strategies varied among different respondents. The mean scores for problem focused, active emotional, and avoidant coping were 21.42, 24.08 and 18.90, respectively. Information was obtained about stress and coping strategies. There were similarities and differences compared to the study conducted in Aruba. Longitudinal studies and studies in other offshore Caribbean medical schools are required.

Introductions: Inability to use effective coping strategies to minimize stress due to high academic and clinical expectations may affect nursing students’ health, academic and clinical performance. Factors Associated with Stress among Nursing Students in Pokhara

This study aims to find the factors associated with stress among nursing students in Pokhara. For this purpose, information was collected from all the one hundred ten nursing students studying proficiency certificate level in Charak Academy, Pokhara by using structured questionnaire. A purposive sampling technique was applied to collect data from all the nursing students. Chi-square test was applied to find the factors associated with stress. Univariate analysis shows that the stress is low among PCL third year students while stress is high among first-and second-year students. More than half of the students have low stress among nurses in age group 17-21year as compared to 60 percent to nurses in age group 22-25 year. Likewise, the level of stress is high among nurses from nuclear family (52.8%) as compared as 23.8% nurses in joint family. Bivariate analysis (chi square) shows that the majority of the variables are not significantly related to the stress, however educational level and family type are found significantly related to the stress among the nurses.

A Pilot Study to Assess the Coping among First Year Students of Bachelor of Science in Nursing Course from a Selected College of Nursing, Bangalore

Beginning life at college naturally generates both excitement and anxiety for many reasons including the academic responsibilities and meeting new people. Students are expected to be more independent in a college. One may find that his or her fellow students are more motivated or instructors are more demanding. As a result of these new demands, it is common for college students to experience greater levels of stress related to academics.. The present study has been undertaken as a pilot study to assess the coping among first year nursing students with an intention to prepare a coping strategy later. The research approach used for the present study was quantitative. A descriptive research design was adopted for the study. The study was conducted among 20 first year students of Bachelor of Science in nursing course from a selected college in Bangalore. Subjects were selected by simple random sampling technique. The coping was assessed using a standardized tool called stress coping style inventory. The baseline characteristics of the subjects were assessed by a researcher prepared questionnaire. The analysis of baseline characteristics revealed that 80% of the subjects were female where as 20% were male. Third or more was the order of birth for 60% of the subjects. Monthly income of the family was <10,000 for 55% of the subjects. Regarding the education of parents 50% each belonged to the category of <10 th standard and >10 th standard. Regarding the type of family 60% of the subjects belonged to nuclear family. And 75% of the subjects took the decision to join the nursing course by self where as 25% of subjects joined to nursing course due to compulsion from parents or significant others .For 60% of subjects the reason for joining the nursing was service to mankind where as 40 % of subjects reported other interests like job opportunity, money and going abroad. Regarding the coping the Mean percentage of passive problem coping was the highest (77.33) with a Mean+ SD of 23.2+ 5.11 followed by active emotional coping with a mean percentage of 71.5 and a Mean+ SD of 28.6+ 3.77.The mean percentage of active problem was 70.16 with a Mean+ SD of 21.05 + 3.89 .The mean percentage of passive emotional coping (67.5) was the least with a Mean+ SD of 20.25+ 3.72

A descriptive study of perceived stress among the North Indian nursing undergraduate students

In recent years, there is a growing appreciation of the stresses involved in nursing training. It is important for nursing educators to know the prevalence of psychological distress and psychological well-being among nursing students. The present study aimed to assess perceived stress in the undergraduate students studying in a nursing college located in North India. The present cross-sectional study was carried out at College of Nursing, Maharishi Markandeshwar University, Haryana, in the month of August 2011 using pretested self-administered questionnaire. Perceived stress score was measured using perceived stress scale (PSS). The mean perceived stress score of all 282 students was 28.67 (SD = 5.32), with a median of 26 (IQR = 22-34). Female students had more perceived stress score (31.33) than male students (26.01). The maximum mean perceived stress score (29.66) was observed in 2(nd) year students, and the least mean perceived stress score (26.28) was found in 3rd year students....
