ICT in Higher Education: An Exploration of Practices in Malaysian Universities

Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have been provided by higher education authorities to ensure that teachers use ICT to enhance their teaching, learning and research outcomes. However, ICT has been found to be underutilized, especially by teachers. To investigate this issue, the technology adoption and gratification (TAG) model was validated and used to examine Malaysian university teachers' adoption and gratification of ICT for teaching and research purposes and then used to investigate the moderating effect of universities in different regions. Three hundred and ninetyseven teachers from west and east Malaysian universities were surveyed using a stratified random sampling technique. The research data were analysed using three-stage structural equation modelling. There were focused use factors: (a) academic purpose, (b) research purpose, and (c) teaching purpose. The TAG model was useful in explaining differences in ICT uses. West Malaysian teachers' perceived usefulness and ease of use mediated the relationships between computer self-efficacy, gratification and intention to use ICT, respectively. However, for east Malaysian teachers, only perceived ease of use did not mediate the relationship between computer self-efficacy and gratification. Finally, west and east Malaysian teachers' intentions to use ICT mediated the relationships between actual use, perceived usefulness and ease of use. This research confirms the utility of the TAG model for comparing teachers' adoption and gratification of ICT. In addition, this study provides a basis for targeted professional development of teachers in east and west Malaysian universities which were selected based on known differences. This study was conducted to explore the barriers in utilizing educational technology among lecturers in their teaching practices in a community college in Malaysia. Moreover, this study also aims to identify lecturer's perception towards the usage of the educational technology. Barriers that have been identified can be categorized into lecturers' computer self-efficacy; accessibility of the educational technology; technical support in utilizing the educational technology; and support from administration. A structured questionnaire was distributed to all lecturers in the institution and 72% from the lecturers agreed to participate as respondents. The result from this study found that the lecturers in the community college have positive perceptions that educational technology enhances their teaching practices and students' performance. Ranks of the barriers from the higher mean score that have been identified are technical support, administrator support, computer self-efficacy and accessibility. Analysis found that lecturers of the community college are ready to utilize the educational technology in their teaching practice. However, the technical supports need to be enhancing Internet and computer facilities. Institution also recommended to provide more training for lecturers to sharpened their teaching skills by utilizing the educational technology.

As Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have advanced, numerous new tools have been implemented to improve the effectiveness of instruction at the university level. It has had a ripple effect throughout Saudi Arabia's educational system. One of the results of this shift is the rise of e-learning, which requires technological means for delivery. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the elements that influence Saudi university students' acceptance of technology in teaching and learning. Data were obtained from 309 students. Prensky (On the Horizon 9:1–6, 2001a, b) and other proponents of the concept of 'digital natives' claim that the current generation of undergraduates possesses advanced knowledge and skills in Information Communication Technologies and is highly motivated to learn in this mode. In contrast, there are studies that revealed a variation in the levels of students' access and a greater tendency to use it for social rather than academic purposes. This suggests that the concept of 'digital natives' need further investigation. Studies undertaken on digital natives in Malaysia have generally shown that students are receptive to technology use in learning English; however, no study has clearly delineated the characteristics of Malaysian 'digital natives'. Thus, the present study intends to fill this gap in knowledge by exploring Malaysian 'digital natives' usage of technologies in terms of extent of use, perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use and the influence of learning styles on this usage by juxtaposing the Technology Acceptance Model with Willing's learning styles construct. A questionnaire survey was used to collect data which were analysed quantitatively. The findings support those of other studies undertaken in other countries. The students only used common technological tools such as emails and Facebook and generally had positive perceptions of the usefulness and ease of use of technology in the learning of English, regardless of learning styles. Although students expressed interest in using more technology, they were using less technology than anticipated in their learning of English and showed a preference for teacher-centred learning.

level of usage is quite encouraging. While in the IPTS, the levels of ICT usage among the educators are still not satisfactorily. Results also indicated that usage frequencies are more prone on informative in nature, besides integrating computer technology. Furthermore, the study also indicates that there were considerable differences in the use of ICT by educators in their perceived proficiencies and integrating computer technology. This study could be improved by expanding the total sampling population to all faculties in both universities. Methods of analysis could also be varied beyond the descriptive analysis done. Factors that could hinder the level of ICT usage by the educators could also be studied.
Open and Distance Learning (ODL) institutions have long recognized the need of their learners to participate in education programmes through a flexible delivery of instructions. One of the key elements of a flexible delivery mode is the use of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in providing software applications and tools for e-learning. However, the potential of ICT will only be fully realized if learners have the ability and capacity to use them, and at the same time possess positive attitudes towards learning with ICT. The study aims to determine learners' perceptions of the use of ICT in learning at Open University Malaysia (OUM) by examining their abilities and experiences, with a view to identifying areas for enhancing the effectiveness of e-learning. Determining the competency of learners in their use of ICT applications is not an easy task; thus a survey methodology was employed, involving a random sample of 457 undergraduate learners. Respondents were asked to rate their own skills using four common software applications (word processing, presentation software, email and digital library). In general, the study found that between 39-56% of learners were able to use the four software applications on their own. In terms of experience, nearly three fourths of learners had used Online Forum several times, followed by Interactive Website and Email Support. With regards to learners' perceptions on the value of ICT and its potential role in education, the respondents held a fairly positive view of the different advantages that ICT can bring to learning. However, they also showed a relatively strong preference for learning with traditional method, questioning the value of ICT. Finally, the study found that ability and experience in the use of ICT are correlated with positive perception towards learning with ICT. A regression analysis found that the significant predictors of positive perception towards learning with ICT, with an overall R-square of 20% include: ability to use email and the experience of using MyLMS, online discussion forums and email support. This implies that in order to encourage OUM learners to use ICT in learning, it is vital to upgrade their ICT skills and provide them with the means to gain experience in e-learning through myLMS. The results of this study are also compared with that of the European Universities (SPOT+, 2004).

Education and learning have been significantly impacted by ICT. The purpose of this project is to create a new model and conduct confirmatory factor analysis in order to better understand how students utilize ICT in the classroom. An additional aim is to study, based on students’ attitudes and aspirations to utilize ICT for digital learning, their fundamental computer abilities, media-related skills, WBS, and adoption of digital learning technologies, by surveying students at Bisha University and King Faisal University. In this research, we apply and use the theory of technology acceptance model (TAM). We employ structural equation modelling (SEM) of e-learning and self-efficacy have a positive impact and substantially associated with perceived usefulness and-learning. Although e-learning has gained acceptance in universities around the world, the study of the intention to use e-learning is still largely unexplored in Malaysia. The developed model is employed utilize elearning. The study concludes that university students in Malaysia have positive perceptions towards e-learning and intend to practice it for educational purposes.
