Effective Vocabulary Teaching Strategies For The English

Vocabulary learning is an important and indispensable part of any language learning process. The author of this thesis focuses on effective vocabulary teaching strategies in the English for Academic Purposes ESL classroom. Drawing on findings obtained from observing three English for Academic Purposes ESL classrooms across the U.S.A, several current databases and his personal experience as a teacher and learner, the author discusses various effective vocabulary teaching strategies in the English for Academic Purposes classroom which could greatly assist English language learners in their journey of language acquisition and therefore expedite the language learning process.

PRINCIPLES OF LEARNING AND TEACHING VOCABULARY

Vocabulary teaching and learning principles assist in providing effective teaching and learning methods, in accordance with the learners’ proficiency level. However, studies that looked into the relevancy of those principles are rather limited. Thus, this study focuses on finding the common practices of vocabulary teaching and learning principles in the classroom. Language has given human being the ability to communicate with each other, forming a complex system of communication, and within each language vocabulary stands as the basis for the language. Vocabulary should be considered as more than a set of single word units, moreover, vocabulary is as the smallest unit in the language. Thus in mastering a language, it is crucial for the learner to acquire the vocabulary.

The Principles and the Teaching of English Vocabulary: A Review

The importance of vocabulary, its types, selection criteria, size and depth, and teaching principles were found unclear. The present article seeks to respond to such challenge. To achieve the mentioned goals, we did a systematic review to previously related studies and theories. The results showed that the vocabulary was found to be more functional as a basis for communication, a reflection of social reality, emotion booster, and academic ability predictor. It also revealed that its contribution to the basic language skills varied. Finally, the principles of teaching vocabulary, size and depth, and teaching and learning vocabulary materials (TLVMs) appeared to be associated with student's vocabulary mastery.

Research in teaching Vocabulary

This review surveys research on second language vocabulary teaching and learning since 1999. It first considers the distinction between incidental and intentional vocabulary learning. Although learners certainly acquire word knowledge incidentally while engaged in various language learning activities, more direct and systematic study of vocabulary is also required. There is a discussion of how word frequency counts and information on word meaning from computer corpora can inform the selection of words to be studied, with a particular focus on spoken vocabulary. This leads to a consideration of learner dictionaries and some research evidence on how effectively students can use them to understand the meanings of words. Then classroom research on teaching vocabulary is discussed. Another significant topic is the design of computer-based language learning programs to enhance opportunities for learners to expand their vocabulary knowledge. Finally, a summary of recent work on vocabulary testing is presented.

Language is undoubtedly the most valuable single possession of the human race. In the present era, the English language plays a pivotal role in all fields. It is a house of knowledge contributing adequate information to the fields of literature, science, and technologies. There is an emergence of various developments internationally which stands today as a magnet drawing attention of the people around the world. The language has given a vivid picture of the world situations. Today, the core of the education system is to guide students to master the English language. The teachers need to teach English as it imparts knowledge for different purposes. Acquiring a second language is challenging and artistic and appreciated today as it is the best for higher education. The objective of the article is to make the students understand the element of vocabulary through the formulated techniques discussed in the article. It focuses on the seven strategies implicated to enhance vocabulary for the second language learners. Second language teachers play pivotal role in exhibiting the significance of vocabulary to the second language learners. The article attempts to provide an outline to the facets of vocabulary used in the process of acquiring second language, teaching second language and testing the level of vocabulary.

Approaches in vocabulary teaching

History of teaching English language reaches to Middle Ages. Over such a long period of time linguistic methodology faced to reforms many times. The aim of these papers is not to map development of all methods used within the history but I focused on two, commonly used in today's conditions: grammar-translation method and communicative approach.
