Running Head: MEDIA ENTREPRENEURSHIP Media Entrepreneurship: Definition, Theory and Context
2005
This paper introduces entrepreneurship research as a complement to industrial organization approaches to media research. First, media entrepreneurship and its theoretical relationship to media innovation are explicated. Then the context of media entrepreneurship in the U.S. is constructed to show current patterns and historical trends. Through this lens, media industries in the U.S. take on a different appearance compared to the picture painted by conventional competition measurement. They are more entrepreneurial and dynamic than one might have expected. Conclusions suggest future research to build an understanding of the role of media entrepreneurship, innovation that contributes to the health of the media thereby affecting its ability to serve democracy. The editorial concludes by calling for continuing efforts to theory-building to further develop the field.
Platform Studies and Digital Cultural Industries
Sociologia, 2020
By providing a review of a number of recent and relevant publications, this paper reconstructs major trends, topics and challenges within the state of the art of scholarly research on the platformization of cultural industries, addressing the crucial role that digital platforms have acquired in recent years in the production and circulation of a variety of cultural contents. More specifically, after offering an introduction on the ways in which the study of digital platforms emerged as strictly intertwined with the evolution of certain cultural industry sectors, such as gaming and video sharing, the paper addresses in-depth three distinctive domains of cultural production and consumption: music, journalism, and photography. In so doing, the paper traces a variety of perspectives beyond the mainstream political economy-oriented focus of platform studies, suggesting emerging paths for future research on these rapidly shifting and increasingly debated issues.
Media Entrepreneurship: A consensual Definition
Media Entrepreneurship has been an ambiguous, unclear and controversial concept and despite of growing academic efforts in the last decade, it is still a poorly defined subject. This paper is an effort to fill this gap by providing a comprehensive definition of media entrepreneurship. Firstly, a literature review conducted and entrepreneurship, media, opportunity and innovation as building blocks of media entrepreneurship explained. Then by using of a mixed of bibliographic method and a Delphi method with multi-stage analysis process, a consensual definition of media entrepreneurship proposed. This definition integrates some key features of the emerging media environment such as distinction of content and platform, value delivery, opportunity development, non-monetary benefit, etc. It is expected that the findings of this research clear the ground for further researches in the field of media entrepreneurship.
The media paradigm on digital entrepreneurship
2018
This article aims to critically examine the media's treatment of digital entrepreneurship. To that end, it describes the paradigm from which journalists develop their ideas about digital start-ups and internet entrepreneurs. The answers that we obtained from 129 journalists revealed three main results. First, we observed that there is a kind of uniformity of opinion among journalists. Second, we uncovered a discrepancy between the convictions of the media and the observations of research in management sciences. Lastly, we demonstrated that the inaccuracies in some articles in the press are consciously conveyed and accepted by the journalists. Our article includes a number of discussions to comprehend the impact of these observations on the behavior and actions of stakeholders in the entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Purpose: This article is for the purpose of presenting a continued observation on the research of media and entrepreneurship. Media and entrepreneurship have strong relevance to each other-on the one hand, essential characteristics of entrepreneurship including innovation and novel ways of content creation are crucial in building media business success; on the other hand, media play a vital role in promoting an entrepreneurial spirit, by transmitting values and images ascribed to it-this special relationship has been examined a decade ago by an earlier study conducted by this author. Well past the time of media industry development and landscape transformation, much progress has been made since then, it is highly worthwhile to revisit the topic and to identify changes in the field. Therefore, the current article presents a continued study, it aims at observing the status quo of the field of media entrepreneurship research and proposing an agenda for future development. Methodology: The study was conducted by a bibliographic analysis on the scholarly work published between 2005 and 2017. Findings from the study indicate growing interests in the research of media and entrepreneurship. The field of inquiries is getting to be more mature, with the progress made on the fundamental conceptual building. In the existing literature, innovation has been a central topic for study, and entrepreneurial journalism was emerged as a new focal issue; meanwhile, use of social media to promote entrepreneurship has also attracted close academic attention. Findings/Contribution: The study provides practical implications to media entrepreneurs and social implications to promote entrepreneurship spirit through traditional and new media platforms. The article also contributes original value to understanding the intrinsic linkage between media and entrepreneurship.
Studying Platforms and Cultural Production: Methods, Institutions, and Practices
Social Media + Society, 2020
This introduction to the second special collection of articles on the platformization of the cultural industries foregrounds research methods and practices. Drawing from the 12 articles included in this collection, as well as the 14 articles published in the first collection, we identify commonalities in approaches, consistencies in traditions, and uniform modes of analysis. We argue that approaches that have been deployed in media industry studies for decades—semi-structured interviews, discourse analysis, content analysis, and participant observation—remain productive. At the same time, transformations in the temporalities and curation of cultural production require updated modes of investigation and analysis. As such, we spotlight contributors’ novel methods and innovative theoretical approaches, such as the walkthrough method and multi-sided market theory.

The growth of digital platforms generates strong network effects and dynamics of all winners, which disrupts systemic growth and further stimulates competition between them. Despite the positive effects, under certain conditions, these same functions make the currently operating platforms vulnerable to competitive strategic moves through platforms where participants can add value for themselves and at the same time avoid pre-investment in value added generation. In this analysis, we use an interpretive synthesis of different theoretical concepts of platform business to theorize these strategies as a new category and their distinctive features. Overall, the study demonstrates the potential for unconventional and opportunistic strategies to compete on platforms that extend beyond more traditional ones, such as network quality, diversity and size.
Digitalization and Media Business Models
Mapping Digital Media Reference Series No. 5, 2011

Journalism Studies, 2021
Digital platforms have disrupted traditional news organizations, with new platform-based models gaining ground. However, the incumbents can defend their positions and reap the benefits of multisided market structures by establishing a platform business model themselves. We examine a case study of the Austrian News Agency (APA), which gradually formulated a strategy that resulted in a platform-based business model. Platform features were strategized and innovated over time and in phases, with the intent of creating value for customers on both sides of the platform. We found that APA's platform transformation was enabled by a visionary value proposition backed by a trusted institution's legitimacy and a cooperative organizational model that provided added incentives for the participating news media companies. The strategy and the business model emerged on the basis of external developments and internal realizations concerning the feasibility of the new platform strategy. Based on our results, we develop a framework for an incumbent strategy formation process towards a platform business model. This framework demonstrates the incumbent organization's emergent, as well as deliberate, strategic ability to introduce platform features into its business model, based on unique intra-firm synergies with established parts of the business, and highlighting a potential for "incumbent advantage."
