Discussions on the usefulness and importance of hope have had a long tradition in literature and most of the theories argue strongly that the experience of hope must be recognized as complex, holistic and multidimensional. From interdisciplinary perspectives grounded on research that investigates this construct – in Psychology (AVERILL & SUNDARARAJAN, 2005; JEVNE, 2005; BRUININKS & MALLE, 2005), in Philosophy (NUNN, 2005; DAUENHAUER, 2005), in Sociology (LUDEMA, 2001) and in Education (FREIRE, 1992; SNYDER et al, 2002; HALPIN, 2003; MURPHY & CARPENTER, 2008), to mention a few – I examine hope as a strategic orientation for classroom experiences. The objective of this paper, therefore, is to contribute to the investigation of the role of hope in the field of teaching and learning English as a foreign language as a way of empowering teachers and students.
