The Effectiveness of Mental Health Literacy Curriculum among Undergraduate Public Health Students
International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health
Mental health literacy (MHL) plays an important role in public health. Improving MHL can promote mental health at the individual and public levels. To date, no published studies have assessed the effectiveness of MHL curriculum interventions among undergraduate public health students. The participants in this study were undergraduate public health students (n = 48) who were enrolled in an 18-week MHL curriculum for 100 min per week. MHL was assessed using the Mental Health Literacy Scale for Healthcare Students. A paired sample t-test was performed to examine the immediate and delayed effects of the MHL curriculum. The total MHL score significantly improved, and a moderate effect size was found directly after the intervention and six weeks later. There were significant differences in the recognition of mental illness (p < 0.01), help-seeking efficacy (p < 0.05), and help-seeking attitude (p < 0.05) in the five components of MHL between pre- and post-test. Furthermore, signi...
Does mental health literacy influence help-seeking behavior in medical students?
2020
Introduction : Medical students are experiencing uncertainty in finding the appropriate help for their mental health problems. When they finally decide to seek help, some of them are already in a mental crisis. The suitable indicator for early identification of mental disorder is mental health literacy. Mental health literacy also functions as a tool to decrease stigma towards people with mental illness and to improve help-seeking behavior. The purpose of this study is to determine the influence of mental health literacy to help-seeking behavior and to describe mental health literacy and help-seeking behavior of the medical students. Methods : The study design was observational analytical. Participants filled demographic data and answered questionnaire via an online file sharing platform. The questionnaires used in this study were Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHLS) and Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Short Form (ATSPPH-SF). The purpose of this paper is to evaluate mental health literacy in medical students using the Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHLS), and provide validation of the measure.Design/methodology/approachIn total, 251 participants were recruited from medical schools across the UK. Participants completed demographic details and the MHLS. This paper reports total MHLS scores and their relationships with demographics and experiences with mental illness.FindingsThe mean MHLS score was 127.69. MHL was significantly higher in females, and students in later years of study (p<0.05). Over 40 per cent of respondents reported having personal experience of mental illness. This, as well as having a close friend or family member with a mental illness, was associated with higher MHL (p<0.05).Originality/valueThis study is the first to use the MHLS and provide validation o...
Psychometric Properties of the Thai Mental Health Literacy Scale in Sixth-Year Medical Students
Siriraj Medical Journal
Objective: To assess the psychometric properties of the Thai Mental Health Literacy Scale (TMHLS) in sixth-year medical students.Materials and Methods: By using the purposive sampling method, we enrolled 202 participants in this study. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze demographic data. The index of item-objective congruence (IOC) was used to verify content validity. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was performed to establish the construct validity of the TMHLS. The internal consistency was estimated by computing Cronbach’s coefficient alpha. Results: The TMHLS had good content validity (IOC=.85) and construct validity. The EFA resulted in five factors, which included 32 of the 35 items and accounted for 46.86% of the variance. The factors were the ability to recognize mental disorders; confidentiality of mental health practitioners; skills of mental health information seeking; beliefs about mental illnesses; and attitudes toward patients with mental illness. The reliabili...
Mental Health Literacy Amongst College Students : A Community Based Study
Indian Journal of Mental Health(IJMH)
Background: High level of mental health literacy which includes adequate knowledge and positive attitudes in medical, psychology and sociology students towards psychiatric illnesses would make early recognition of and appropriate intervention in these disorders more likely. Our aim was to assess knowledge and attitude of college students of three faculties-medical, psychology and sociology towards the mentally ill and socio-demographic correlates. Methodology: A survey method was employed in Medical and Arts Colleges. One medical college and 5 arts colleges were surveyed regarding students' attitude towards psychiatric illness using National Health Service (NHS) survey questionnaire. Total 1231 completed responses were analyzed. Statistical analysis methods used were Chi square test, Student's t test and One-way ANOVA. Results: There was association between present and past contact with someone with mental health problem and future willingness to have relationship with the same. Conclusions: Areas of deficits in attitude in students can be targeted for further educational interventions and training so that positive attitudes can be inculcated in future health professionals which will ultimately benefit our society.

Descriptive statistics and T-test were used for analyses using p<0.05 as level of significance. Results: The results showed that the respondents’ MHL is sufficient as to all the variables. All variables comparing students’ and employees’ MHL were statistically not significant ex...

BMC Public Health, 2020
Background Investigating variables associated with mental health literacy in the college-age population takes us one step closer to providing intervention for this vulnerable group, where growing rates of psychological disorders are a serious public concern. This study adds to the existing literature by incorporating, within a single model, multi-faceted variables (demographic, psychological, and academic) that contribute to mental health literacy in demographically and ethnically diverse college students. Methods Participants were undergraduate students enrolled at nine different colleges that are part of a large, urban, public university system. A total of 1213 respondents (62.0% female, 73.3% non-white) completed an in-person assessment of mental health literacy and answered questions about demographics, college experience, and mental health experience. Data were analyzed to identify which variables best discriminated between high, mid-level, and low performers on this assessment...
