Seed germination and early seedling growth are the stages in a plant忆s life cycle during which it is most sensitive to environmental stresses. The adaptability of an alien plant at this stage to unfavorable environmental conditions is one of the key factors determining its invasiveness. In this study, experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of dormancy features, storage time, pericarp, temperature, pH, osmotic stress, salt stress and seed burial depth on seed germination, seedling growth and seedling emergence in Gaura parviflora. Although the four seeds of each capsule were found to differ significantly with respect to weight (P < 0.01) , their vigor and germination rates were similar to one another. Seed vigor was greater than 96%, and germination was higher than 98% after release from dormancy. The pericarp of G. parviflora affected seed germination via physical obstruction, and was the major cause of seed dormancy. This paper suggests that attention to Chinese philanthropy is not, however, as limited as often suggested because this topic has often been “embedded,” or hidden, in other subject areas that resulted in their exclusion from bibliographies under the keywords philanthropy or charity. The main example of this “embedding” can be seen in studies of missionary history, which often included significant exposition of the philanthropic work of missionaries in China despite not being categorized under the “philanthropy” subject heading. A complete understanding of Western studies of Chinese philanthropy cannot ignore the contributions of these studies. This paper also argues that the dominance of missionaries in Western perceptions of philanthropy in China for a long time hindered, or even distorted, the growth of the history of Chinese philanthropy as a specialized area of research. It was only with the development of other trends in Western studies of Chinese history, beginning with an emphasis on “China-centered history,” that eventually helped to correct the distortions in Western perceptions about Chinese philanthropy. These development ultimately contributed growing attention to this subject that finally promises to bring more strength and better balance to the study of Chinese philanthropy in the West.

Válvulas de Ahmed em doentes com Polineuropatia Amiloidótica Familiar

Objetivo: Avaliar os resultados clínicos dos doentes com glaucoma secundário à Polineuropatia Amiloidótica Familiar (PAF) submetidos a implante de válvula de Ahmed no Serviço de Oftalmologia do CHP entre Novembro de 2010 e Fevereiro de 2015. Material e Métodos: Estudo retrospetivo de 37 doentes (47 olhos) com o follow-up mínimo de 6 meses. Definiu-se sucesso cirúrgico relativo como pressão intraocular (PIO) ≥6 mmHg e ≤21 mmHg ou redução de 20% da PIO, com ou sem medicação ou reoperação. Sucesso cirúrgico absoluto foi definido como a obtenção dos mesmos resultados, mas sem recurso a medicação ou cirurgia adicional. Foram analisadas variáveis demográficas, PIO no 1º dia, 1ª e 2ª semanas, 1º, 2º, 3º e 6º meses, 1º ano e à data da última consulta, acuidade visual pré e 1 mês após cirurgia, número de anti-glaucomatosos pré e pós cirurgia, entre outras.
