Investigating The Approaches of English Teachers in Fostering EFL Students’ Language proficiency

This research is qualitatively descriptive, intending to define the efforts of English teachers at Boarding school and hereinafter referred to as Pesantren (al-Fatah) to develop students’ English language proficiency. Subjects of this study are two English teachers and Students at Pesantren al-Falah. This study also investigates the way of English teaching methods or strategies in the classroom. There are two main instruments to collect data, those are Observation and interview guidelines. The result of the study indicates that the most teaching methods used are still a teacher-centered, direct method and habituation. This is due to the influence of the traditional Arabic learning model which is still largely focused on what is conveyed by the teacher in the classroom. In the 20th and 21st centuries, English has become an indispensable part of educational curriculum in Iranian schools. Despite all the efforts and investments devoted to cultivate and popularize English among Iranian language learners, the resultant outcome could not live up to the authorities' expectations. Generally speaking, the process of teaching and learning English as a foreign language in Iran is not satisfactory. A great body of research has proved that different factors are involved in this process. The researcher made an attempt to examine all the possibly existing researches which investigated/focused on the problems of teaching/learning English in Iran to elicit these factors and to scrutinize the existing problems. It is also an attempt to highlight what can be done to improve the situation significantly. A classification of these factors was suggested and it was indicated that these factors are highly interrelated.
The Implementation of English as A Medium of Instruction in An Indonesian Efl Setting

The effectiveness studies for content subjects in an EFL and ESL using monolingual or bilingual approach has been inconclusive. This descriptive research was designed to examine the implementation of English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) in non-English Department. The researchers analyzed fifty-eight undergraduate university students enrolled in International class program in non-English department in one of the state universities in Indonesia. They have been given a fill in Likert-scale questionnaire on how they perceive the use and and function of English instruction within English-only (monolingual) and English-Indonesia (bilingual) L2 classroom. The Integration of Native Language in EFL Classes

This article shows how the integration of native language in EFL classes affect positively the teaching and learning processes of English as a foreign language. The methodology shows a quantitative approach performing different processes and techniques adapted to the requirements of the investigation, data is the result of tests done to two groups of fifteen students in two class at a university, surveys and interviews. There is a theoretical research from authors about the use of native language in EFL classes which makes the investigation very solid. The results show that the integration of students’ native language in the learning of English as a foreign language can help them achieve their learning goals.
The Barriers of Teaching Speaking English for EFL Learners

This research portraits the barriers in teaching speaking for EFL learner. The barriers in teaching speaking English come form two aspects: internal and external factors. Internal factors are native language, age, exposure, innate phonetic ability, identity and language ego, and motivation concern for good speaking English and external factors are teaching speaking English at large class and learners’ autonomy. Each barrier is connected with the available method used in teaching speaking English. The conclusion of this research is teacher must focus on the learners need, the second is teacher applies for environment analysis before conducting teaching speaking English, the last is teacher chooses the suitable method based on the problems that he/she found in his/her teaching speaking English. Language input, learning environment, and motivation of a successful EFL learner

The present study involved one EFL learner who was regarded as successful, not only of understanding second language acquisition theories but also of demonstrating exceptional language skills thus far. An in-depth semi-structured interview was administered with three key objectives-to identify features of language inputs that enable her to develop English skills, to investigate her situation of the learning environment, and to reveal her motivation in learning the language. The participant was a successful EFL learner who was determined by the excellent TOEFL score and performed an outstanding achievement in English proven by the academic transcript. The data were gathered by means of a semi-structured interview and analyzed through the transcription process, coding, and drawing the conclusion. The results indicated that joining an intensive class and integrating English in her daily activities had primarily contributed to her language skill improvement. While the physical environment slightly provided a conducive environment for learning English, her academic environment was steadily supporting her. In addition to the importance of English in her future, the participant was successful in keeping her motivation to learn the language. Using English as a Medium of Instruction in EFL Context in Higher Education

This paper attempts to find out the use of English as a Medium of instruction (EMI) in higher level in English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom. For the study, weselected 16 teachers and 80 students teaching and studying in Bachelor level in Mid-West University and TU affiliated colleges from the Surkhet valley using simple random sampling technique. Then, we distributed the questionnaire to the participants, observed their classes, and took interviews to collect the required information. From the critical analysis and interpretation of the information, we conclude that all the teachers and most of the students in higher level preferred EMI. Similarly, EMI in English subjects forced to implement EMI in other subjects in EFL situation, too. The result showed that EMI is being implemented but majority of the students in higher level have been facing various problems and challenges; specifically, most of the students were interested in learning English through mother tongue though they want to be enclosed with the EMI. This study concludes with suggestion to develop positive attitude towards EMI from practice to policy level with sufficient teaching learning aids, trainings and essential requirements in higher education in EFL context.
The Use of English Medium Instruction on Efl Students at Tertiary Education Level

Nowadays, English Medium Instruction (EMI) was used in many education levels. Although L2 learners study English since primary education, some of them still cannot communicate and write well in English. It is probably caused by lack of self-esteem, motivation, comprehensible input, and interaction. This study aimed to investigate the use of English medium instruction on EFL students at tertiary education level. This study employed a quantitative method. The participants of this study were 45 undergraduate students at Khon Kaen University, Thailand. A survey questionnaire regarding the use of English medium instruction with a five points likert scale is assigned to obtain the data. The result of this study revealed that there are some subjects that use English as medium of instruction. Furthermore, the students stated that they got exposure in English in several ways such as read textbook, watch YouTube, and write power point in English. The results also showed that the students' English ability significantly improve regarding the use of English as medium of instruction.
Factors Underlying Characteristics of Acquisition of English Language in EFL Classrooms

This study tried to find out what factors underline the characteristics of acquisition of English language in EFL classrooms. To this end, the Characteristics of English Language Acquisition Scale (ELAS) consisting of 41 items was designed by the researchers of this study and administered to 388 pre University Iranian EFL students at various private and public schools in Neyshabour and Zebarkhan. Factor analysis was run to determine the number of factors underlying the scale. The application of Principle Axis Factoring and rotating the extracted factors showed that the characteristics loaded acceptably on twelve factors underlying the learners’ EFL acquisition, i.e., learning boosters, facilitation, determination, voluntary, teaching methodology, affective factors, attitudes toward foreign speakers and their culture, learner engagement, adjustment, enhancement, teachers' output and individual differences. The results are discussed and suggestions are made for future research.
Various attempts in developing English Language Learning program have been done by educational institutions in order to create better English language speakers from non English language background. This article proposes an alternative to more effective English Language Learning program for future EFL teachers in English Education Department IAIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya. The proposal strongly considers the multicultural and multilingual backgrounds of the students and offers an intensive six-month program to improve their academic English language ability. The context and main ideologies of the program will be described and explained, as well as the assessment used. The expected outcome of the program is that not only the students’ English Basic Interpersonal Communicative Skills (BICS) but also Cognitive/Academic Language Proficiency (CALP) will improve.
