An analytical component of socio-semiotics referring to the "meaning" or the "signified" (Gottdiener, 1995). Epoch: Particular period in which a typical meaning production takes place. Ideology: Carlton (2015) and Bennett (1981b) argue ideology is a set of "idea(s) or belief(s)" constituting "social consciousness". In the research context, ideology includes the socioeconomic and political situations relevant to the production of material culture and the recognition of meaning. Index: An identification of something (Chandler, 2007). The relationship between meaning and its physical representation is perceived through "pragmatic experience of the material world" (Gottdiener, 1995) or "the cause and effect laws" (Ponzio, 1993). Kampong: The Indonesian Dictionary (Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia) defines kampong or kampung as the smallest administrative entity in a subdistrict. An area identified as kampong usually is usually unique because of house design, ethnic, economic activity and other distinctive qualities (https://kbbi.web.id/kampung). Material culture: Gottdiener (1995) argues that material culture is the material manifestation of social forces representing "discursive ideas" or "belief". The material manifestation takes some forms such as physical objects, activities or the apparatus of meaning and ideology in the real world. Meaning: Hartman (1967) argues that meaning is a "total set of property" of a thing. In this research, meaning corresponds to narratives contained in representation. It also makes heritage significant as argued by Byrne (2008). Modernity and globalisation: Kusno (2012) argues that modernity is a thought, idea or perspective, which is in opposition to tradition. It has an association with globalisation as it reflects the diminishing of geographical boundaries (Cuthbert, 2005; Hsia, 2002) and the intrusion of ideas particularly from Western to non-Western countries (Szeman, 2012). Nusantara or nusantara architecture: Pangarsa (2006) argues nusantara as a term associated with an architectural movement concerning the recognition, appreciation and implementation of local wisdom in human settlement. This movement primarily endorses the conservation of traditional architecture and tradition. Regionalism and locality: Lefaivre and Tzonis (2003) suggest a design approach that gives an attention to the identity-or locality-rather than "universal dogma". In this research, regionalism refers to a narrative and discourse associated with locality. Representation: The physical manifestation of an idea. It also corresponds to the "materiality of built environment" as suggested by Hillier (2007). This research associates this term with architectural objects located in urban space, which might be in the form of buildings, monuments, groups of buildings and public spaces. Symbol: Chandler (2007) and Gottdiener (1995) argue that symbol is a representation with meaning specific to a particular cultural or social context. Hence, an inductive understanding of the context is essential (Ponzio, 1993). Traditional philosophy: A collection of wisdom, moral system, beliefs and knowledge used by people in conducting their daily life. It is inherited from ancestors and deeply embedded in social systems. Typo-morphology: An analytical technique for investigating urban form initially introduced by Aymonino (Moudon, 1989); and Caniggia and Maffei (2001). This research uses this method to elaborate three components of urban form: street network, land uses and building types. Urban form: Panerai, Castex, Depaule, and Samuels (2004) argue that the urban form is a detailed physical design of an urban environment, which is a product of urban planning and design processes. Urban space: Krier and Rowe (1979) argue that urban space is all empty spaces located between buildings or physical objects in a town. In this research, this term is used also to indicate all spaces in urban settings where people's activities take place. 1.5 Organisation of the thesis The thesis contains nine chapters. The chapters are organised systematically following the analysis stages. Chapters 1, 2, 3 and 4 contain introduction, theoretical framework, the introduction to case studies and methodology. These chapters are essential to underpinning the analysis process. Chapters 5, 6, 7 and 8 contain analyses and discussions about analytical units, such as the social milieu relevant to symbolism and the case study analyses. Chapter 9 discusses the final analyses. This section addresses theoretical inquiry about the representations, meanings and the process of socio-semiotics. Finally, Chapter 10 contains the conclusion.
What architecture symbolizes in urban space? semiotics of power in temple city

The present paper aims to decipher historical shifts in the city space of Bhubaneswar in India by examining semiotics, aesthetics and functionality of the urban architecture. In its present form, this 2,000-year-old city has 500 temples constructed in the Kalinga style of architecture. The study finds that existing architectural symbols including the temple architecture are the outcome of continuous bargaining and resistance at the local level between conceived and perceived space. Post-1990 developments in governance structures, economic structures, investment, and the consumption patterns of land and housing complexes have redefined the aesthetics of this city. Drawing primarily on Pierre Bourdieu's theories of practice and field, the paper uses the case of Bhubaneswar's architectural shift to illustrates a framework that takes into consideration noncodified regulations and the informal, illegal, and negotiated aspects of the production and reproduction of urban aesthetics to capture the shifting power dynamics.

In this study my intention is to interpret the "discursive" and the "ideological" differences between the architecture of postmodernism and the architecture of globalism. I will point to the paradigmatic differences between these practices and also to some specific "local examples" of execution of social quality by means of architecture being the "cultural instrument" of actualities realization. This study was written by interdisciplinary methodology of cultural studies based on Fuko's discursive analysis and Altizer's ideological analysis of the architectural productions.
Aesthetic research of the building heritage Toko Merah Roland Barthes semiotic approach

Toko Merah includes the Old Building which is one of the 216 cultural heritage monuments in the whole of DKI Jakarta and also one of 8 VOC monuments inherited within the walls and moats of the original Batavian city that are the conservation areas of the Old City. Compared the other old buildings, the Toko Merah is the only official residential building in the VOC's most intact and well-preserved era and retains its authenticity but has yet to be functionalized or adaptive reuse by its owner. This study focuses on Aesthetic studies on the elements of indoor space and its relation to the history of VOC building ownership into a Toko Merah with a semiotic approach. Physically Building space in the Toko Merah as an artefact has a harmony between the beauty of visual elements of decoration, and material that is interpreted socio-cultural status of past glories that have the beauty, harmony and meaning cannot be separated from the form of sign. Thus aesthetics research of interior with semiotic approach as a study on visual elements and ornament as an artefact shows the symbol of the absolute presence which has linkages to the meaning in the past and the present that contains symbolic values as an interpretation of meanings that are capable of supporting research on the image of the building space in more purposeful, objective, systematic and structural history of ownership and in accordance with the functions of the building at the time. Architecture as Communication System with Semiotic Theory (Case Study: Tjong A Fie’s House)

Architecture is an object that can be related to a communication system. In communication systems called Semiotics is needed to examine the object being studied. Semiotics is a guide in finding the meaning of an architectural project, for this article emphasizes the search for architectural meanings of architectural projects that are appreciated by observers. The method used is descriptive qualitative by observing and finding the facts in the site. The object of the study was Tjong A Fie’s house in the Kesawan area of Medan City. The results of this object study were analyzed based on the semiotic theory to draw conclusions about its role in the figure of the building. The analysis results of buildings show that there is someone role for building figures in presenting the expression of his power to a building or living environment in colonial era, that is representing of Tjong A Fie.

This article examined the development of architecture from the point of view of communication systems and understanding semiotics more deeply. The influence of modernization and postmodern forms a diverse architecture especially the architectural style that develops in the world. In appreciation of architectural work, it is required an understanding about communication that uses the theory of semiotics as the basic theory in the formation of language. With the communication system, the appreciation of architectural work will be hitter because of the understanding of semiotics. By using qualitative descriptive as a method, it can directly look at the phenomena and facts that exist in the field or object of research. The objects of research were residential and commercial buildings in Medan City. The results showed that the development of architectural style in Medan city is appreciated by observers as a work that refers to the locality and event background factors.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the ability to redefine the components and indicators of popular architecture facades in contemporary architecture. The research method is content analysis and descriptive-analytic and survey with semiotic and Delphi technique. At first, popular architecture is analyzed using the descriptive and analytical method. Next, 14 components of the popular architecture facades assessment are identified and prioritized in three rounds through survey and Delphi technique. In the third stage, case studies are selected by experts on the basis of the components of the popular architecture facades assessment that are identified in the previous step. In the fourth stage, selected samples are investigated in terms of semiotics and 28 signs are extracted as indicators. Developing countries are subject to quick cultural changes as they evolve. Modern cities have been constructed by the interactions between different types of subjects. The identities of the actors that have been altered by communication in different forms of systems need new structures and infrastructures. The infrastructures should be in alignment with this evolving situation. The substructure is one of the objective reasons for the communication of citizens as, in this regard, individuals (citizens) will experience more emotional enjoyment from the freedom based on the number of facilities available to them. As with both objective and subjective discourses, the city will become more prominent in the modernized architectural structures if it is within the subjective scope of the citizens" free choices. To survive in this vibrant era, architecture has no choice but to be combined with the technologies derived from the modern science. Therefore, if technology or architecture is one of the options available to the citizens of metropolitan cities, it will create small communities and places due to its discursive nature and its locality and amusing quality where the citizen and city are placed in a dynamic situation as an actor and substructure. Our approach in this article has been scientific research and the impact of technology-architecture on modern urban development is studied based on the views of George Simmel and the city"s dependence on the architecture which has derived from this notion.

Social media can form the identity of the representation content. The content of the Instagram account @jakarta_tourism represents the identity of the urban culture of Jakarta as a tourism brand. This study aims to find out and reveal the representation of Jakarta as a city of urban culture, based on the signs from the content of the Instagram account @jakarta_tourism. This study is descriptive qualitative using the constructivist paradigm using the semiotic analysis method by Roland Barthes. The main focus of the semiotic analysis by Roland Barthes is to find the meaning of denotation, connotation, and myth of a sign. The results in this study indicate that some content of the Instagram account @jakarta_tourism represents Jakarta as a city of urban culture and highlight that as part of the brand of Jakarta Tourism.
