Optimal Unit Commitment Methods of Power System
International Journal of Advance Research and Innovative Ideas in Education, 2017
Unit Commitment helps in making decision that which unit should be running in which period so as to satisfy the varying demand of electricity. In case of electricity the load is higher during the daytime especially in evening when industrial loads are high, lights are on and lower during the night and early morning when most of the population is asleep. Unit commitment helps in deciding which generating unit should be on i.e. to bring the unit up to speed, synchronize it to the system, and connect it so it can deliver power to the network. The paper describes different method used to solve the unit commitment problems. All these methods have some weakness, a comprehensive algorithm that combines the strength of all the methods and overcome each other’s weakness would be a suitable approach for solving unit commitment problems.
SOLUTION APPROACHES FOR UNIT COMMITMENT PROBLEMS – AN ANALYSIS
Unit commitment (UC) problem is an important optimizing task for scheduling the on/off states of generating units in power system operation over a time horizon such that the power generation cost is minimized. Since, increasing the number of generating units makes it difficult to solve in practice, many approaches have been introduced to solve the UC problem. An effort to develop a unit commitment approach capable of handling large power systems consisting of both thermal and hydro generating units offers a large profitable return. In order to be feasible, the method to be developed must be flexible, efficient and reliable. In this paper, various proposed methods have been described along with their strengths and weaknesses. As all of these methods have some sort of weaknesses, a comprehensive algorithm that combines the strengths of different methods and overcomes each other's weaknesses would be a suitable approach for solving industry-grade unit commitment problem.
Unit commitment in power generation – a basic model and some extensions
Annals of Operations Research, 2000
For the unit commitment problem in the hydro-thermal power system of VEAG Vereinigte Energiewerke AG Berlin we present a basic model and discuss possible extensions where both primal and dual solution approaches lead to flexible optimization tools. Extensions include staggered fuel prices, reserve policies involving hydro units, nonlinear start-up costs, and uncertain load profiles.

Combined generation units of heat and power, known as CHP units, are one of the most prominent applications of distributed generations in modern power systems. This concept refers to the simultaneous operation of two or more forms of energy from a simple primary source. Due to the numerous environmental, economic, and technical advantages, the use of this technology in modern power systems is highly emphasized. As a result, various issues of interest in the control, operation, and planning of power networks have experienced significant changes and faced important challenges. In this way, the unit commitment problem (UCP) as one of the fundamental studies in the operation of integrated power, and heat systems have experienced some major conceptual and methodological changes. This work, as a complementary review, details the CHP-based UCP (CHPbUCP) in terms of objective functions, constraints, simulation tools, and applied hardwares. Furthermore, some useful data on case studies are p...

The Unit Commitment Problem (UCP) is a well-known combinatorial optimization problem in power systems. The main goal in the UCP is to schedule a subset of a given group of electrical power generating units and also to determine their production output in order to meet energy demands at minimum cost. In addition, a set of technological and operational constraints must be satisfied. A large variety of optimization methods addressing the UCP is available in the literature. This panoply of methods includes exact methods (such as dynamic programming, branch-and-bound) and heuristic methods (tabu search, simulated annealing, particle swarm, genetic algorithms). This paper proposes two non-traditional formulations. First, the UCP is formulated as a mixed-integer optimal control problem with both binary-valued control variables and real-valued control variables. Then, the problem is formulated as a switching time dynamic optimization problem involving only real-valued controls.
