Multifunctional role of natural compounds for autophagy modulation and cancer 2 prevention (original) (raw)

Autophagy is a vacuolar, lysosomal degradation pathway of injured/damaged protein molecules as well as organelles in eukaryotic cells which is controlled by nutrients and stress responses. Dysregulation of autophagy may lead to improvement of various cellular diseases, for instance neurodegenerative disease, obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, malignancies and cancers. Recently, natural compounds have been gained attention to modulate autophagy pathway in cancer prevention, although the prospective role of autophagy in cancer treatment is very complex and not clearly elucidated yet. Numerous synthetic chemicals have been identified to modulate autophagy as a favorable candidates in cancer treatment, but it has adverse side effects. Therefore, different phytochemical of natural compounds and its derivatives have fascinated gain-of-attention to use favorable autophagy modulators in cancer treatment with minimal side effects. In the current review, we discuss the promising role of natural compounds to modulate autophagy pathway to control cancer treatment and prevention.
