FUZZY BASED UNCERTAIN LOW VELOCITY IMPACT ANALYSIS OF LAMINATED COMPOSITE PLATES
The assessment of uncertainty in low-velocity impact responses in laminated composite plates possesses the significant computational challenges. Due to the limited number of experimental data, the realizations of probabilistic descriptions become difficult dealing with uncertain input parameters. This paper presents the fuzzy-based impact response analysis of composite plates. The uncertain output parameters considered in this work namely contact force, plate displacement, impactor's displacement and velocity of the impactor. Newmark's constant average acceleration method is employed for time convergence study. The modified Hertzian contact law is employed to solve the time-dependent equations. In the present imprecise non-deterministic study, non-intrusive Gram-Schmidt Polynomial Chaos Expansion (GPCE) technique is employed for uncertain impact response parameters, wherein, the input parameters are represented by fuzzy triangular membership functions. The GPCE is employed to portray the respective triangular membership function by evaluating the minimum and maximum values of output quantity of interest corresponding to each α-cut.
Fuzzy uncertainty propagation in composites using Gram–Schmidt polynomial chaos expansion
The propagation of uncertainty in composite structures possesses significant computational challenges. Moreover, probabilistic descriptions of uncertain model parameters are not always available due to lack of data. This paper investigates on the uncertainty propagation in dynamic characteristics (such as natural frequencies, frequency response function and mode shapes) of laminated composite plates by using fuzzy approach. In the proposed methodology, non-intrusive Gram–Schmidt polynomial chaos expansion (GPCE) method is adopted in uncertainty propagation of structural uncertainty to dynamic analysis of composite structures, when the parameter uncertainties represented by fuzzy membership functions. A domain in the space of input data at zero-level of membership functions is mapped to a zone of output data with the parameters determined by D-optimal design. The obtained meta-model (GPCE) can also be used for higher α-levels of fuzzy membership function. The most significant input parameters such as ply orientation angle, elastic modulus, mass density and shear modulus are identified and then fuzzified. The proposed fuzzy approach is applied to the problem of fuzzy modal analysis for frequency response function of a simplified composite cantilever plates. The fuzzy mode shapes are also depicted for a typical laminate configuration. Fuzzy analysis of the first three natural frequencies is presented to illustrate the results and its performance. The proposed approach is found more efficient compared to the conventional global optimization approach in terms of computational time and cost.
Damage Prediction Hybrid Procedure for FRP Laminates Subjected to Random Loads
2020
In this paper, a hybrid procedure is formulated in order to predict the damage of a laminate composed of UD FRP laminae under random loading. This procedure is based on two pillars: a stiffness degradation model (SDM) combined with an energy approach taking into account the effect of load ratio in addition to a system of equations generated by SSDQM (space state differential quadrature method), which we solved with a novel technique. The outputs of SSDQM, previously used for free vibration behavior analysis of composite structures, are used with those of SDM to predict the damage failure of a composite laminate subjected to random loading. The obtained results correlate very well with the experimental ones and an extensive comparison with other models validate the accuracy and convergence characteristics of this hybrid procedure.
Probabilistic assessment of composite structures
A methodology and attendant computer code were developed and are used to computationally simulate the uncertain behavior of composite structures. The uncertain behavior includes buckling loads, stress concentration factors, displacements, stress/strain, etc., which are the consequences of the inherent uncertainties (scatter) in the primitive (independent random) variables (constituent, ply, laminate, and structural) that describe the composite structures. The computer code is IPACS (Integrated Probabilistic Assessment of Composite Structures). IPACS can simulate both composite mechanics and composite structural behavior. Application to probabilistic composite mechanics is illustrated by its use to evaluate the uncertainties in the major Poisson's ratio and in laminate stiffness and strength. IPACS' application to probabilistic structural analysis is illustrated by its used to evaluate the uncertainties in the buckling of a composite plate, the stress concentration factor in ...
Probabilistic micromechanical spatial variability quantification in laminated composites
This article presents a probabilistic framework to characterize the dynamic and stability parameters of composite laminates with spatially varying micro and macro-mechanical system properties. A novel approach of stochastic representative volume element (SRVE) is developed in the context of two dimensional plate-like structures for accounting the correlated spatially varying properties. The physically relevant random field based uncertainty modelling approach with spatial correlation is adopted in this paper on the basis of Karhunen-Loève expansion. An efficient coupled HDMR and DMORPH based stochastic algorithm is developed for composite laminates to quantify the probabilistic characteristics in global responses. Convergence of the algorithm for probabilistic dynamics and stability analysis of the structure is verified and validated with respect to direct Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) based on finite element method. The significance of considering higher buckling modes in a stochastic analysis is highlighted. Sensitivity analysis is performed to ascertain the relative importance of different macromechanical and micromechanical properties. The importance of incorporating source-uncertainty in spatially varying micromechanical material properties is demonstrated numerically. The results reveal that stochasticity (/ system irregularity) in material and structural attributes influences the system performance significantly depending on the type of analysis and the adopted uncertainty modelling approach, affirming the necessity to consider different forms of source-uncertainties during the analysis to ensure adequate safety, sustainability and robustness of the structure.

Monte Carlo Simulations (MCS), commonly used for reliability analysis, require a large amount of data points to obtain acceptable accuracy, even if the Subset Simulation with Importance Sampling (SS/IS) methods are used. The Second Order Reliability Method (SORM) has proved to be an excellent rapid tool in the stochastic analysis of laminated composite structures, when compared to the slower MCS techniques. However, SORM requires differentiating the performance function with respect to each of the random variables involved in the simulation. The most suitable approach to do this is to use a symbolic solver, which renders the simulations very slow, although still faster than MCS. Moreover, the inability to obtain the derivative of the performance function with respect to some parameters, such as ply thickness, limits the capabilities of the classical SORM. In this work, a Neural Network-Based Second Order Reliability Method (NNBSORM) is developed to replace the finite element algorit...
