Journal of Public Administration, Finance and Law, 2021

A system of governance is good when it is legitimate, participatory, transparent and accountable, operates by the rule of law, efficient and effective in the use of resources, responsive to the needs of the people and promotes equity and equality. In Nigeria, years of economic exploitation, mal-development and bad governance have continued to fan the ember of conflicts and crisis in the country. A failed, corrupt and inept leadership coupled with inclement domestic socio-political environment have plunged development performance into the abyss. To progress from bad to good governance and from weak to strong development performance, Nigerian political leaders must adhere to the core fundamentals of good governance without which socioeconomic and political development will continue to be an illusion. The cardinal objective of this study is to demonstrate that core fundamentals of good governance impact significantly on development performance. This study adopted qualitative research design as data were collected from secondary sources. The technique of content analysis was applied to analyze the data collected which helped us to make interpretations coherently. The study revealed among other things that governance issues are the bane of development performance in Nigeria. The study therefore, recommends among others that for good governance and strong development performance to be feasible in Nigeria, transparency and accountability, rule of law, electoral legitimacy, efficient and effective service delivery, administrative competence, civil liberties and participation must be guaranteed.

Good Governance as a Tool of Sustainable Development

Growing concern about environmental degradation, disappointment with development efforts to reduce poverty and inequality on a global scale together with economic and socio-political instability has shifted focus from the model of economic growth to the new model of sustainable development. Despite the new orientation of development economics, the question on how to achieve sustainable development goals still remains. In order to avoid failure of the neoliberal agenda, the revised version of Washington Consensus focusing on good governance has taken the leading role in development policy. The aim of this research is to test the links between a fuzzy concept of good governance and very heterogonous dimensions of sustainable development. Our research aims to analyze the effects of good governance on particular indicators of sustainable development, especially of socioeconomic development, at the level of different categories of countries. This study reveals that statistical significance, direction and intensity of the effects of good governance dimensions vary in relation to the selected indicator of sustainable development and affiliation to the particular category of countries. These results suggest that there is no " one size fits all " model of good governance promoted as a universal mantra of sustainable development putting into question the principles of post-Washington consensus as the key response to modern developmental challenges.

The nexus between political institutions and sustainable governance in nigeria

2019

Over the years, the focus and goals of every institutions and government has been the achievement of absolute development and growth. In the case of the Nigeria situation, the construction of its post-colonial political institutions and systems has been faulted with not having the true ingredients of achieving sustainable development, this stems from the fact that the level of leadership over the years has been characterized with corruptions, nepotism, injustice, weakness, military interferences, and also the connotation from the global society that has regarded African and the Nigeria society as a failed state. It is believed that the success of governance in any organized political system is determined by the quality and quantity of change brought about by such governance, which means that the development of any organized political system is determined by the quality of leadership in government. This paper therefore hypothesizes that good governance is a sine qua non of development, and good governance can therefore be measurable to sustainable development/governance.
