CHAPTER THREE HOW DO TURKISH COMMUNICATION AGENCIES ENGAGE IN SOCIAL MEDIA? SIRMA OYA TEKVAR
Exploring Communication through Qualitative Research, 2017
Today, sweeping information and communication technologies lead to fundamental changes in daily life, as well as in the business world and in communication systems. By the diffusion of digital media, a new order has emerged in the communication world. This order not only creates a sort of liberty area in a physically untouchable environment, but also builds a widespread mass impact. Individuals find the lowest common denominator of time and space independently and create digital communities. Hence the socialization process from all corners of the earth is settled effectively and widely through new communication technologies. Unlike the traditional media, the speed of information flow, interactivity (and thus the emergence of new public cyber spaces), the apparent lack of censorship and control mechanisms and the potential power of developing participatory democracy make the internet the most effective and favorite communication tool in our era. Therefore, all of the technological developments and digital communication channels including the internet, which " is probably the most important technological and ideological apparatus " (Kazancı 2007, 368), have also gone into the public relations field with widespread discussions and studies. The opportunity of reaching the large masses in a faster and more efficient way makes the internet an inevitable tool for public relations (PR) practices as well. In addition to this, the adoption and implementation of new media into public relations can be seen as a consequence of correlative yet unparallel developments (Yıldırım Becerikli 2002). Until the recent past, public relations was understood as planned communication work, which is practiced for reaching the organisation's targets, and additionally both public relations and communication studies were interpreted as one-way, one-sided, positivist and mechanic, and based on monologue. However PR needs to be interpreted within its
Examining the internet as a strategic corporate communication tool in public relations practice
The Internet as an innovative platform housing multiple channels of communication is largely responsible for the presence of businesses on the web space. As a result, businesses soon find themselves in a position, not only to feed Internet channels with content but also to manage the content vis-à-vis content on other platforms. In the context of the Nigerian financial services industry, this calls the attention of public relations (PR) practitioners who are positioned in the corporate affairs department to manage the image of the financial institutions they represent. The objective of this study, therefore, was to gain an understanding of the contributions in the literature with respect to the Internet as a communicative tool for businesses. Although the literature has little or no evidence from Nigerian markets, theoretical arguments indicate many uses of the Internet for business communication by PR practitioners resulting in a new communication model proposed by Hoffman& Novak (1996). An attempt to situate these theoretical positions within a local context led the researchers to carry out a pilot study which revealed that there is a gap between internet channels initiated by business and the business objective of opening up such channels. As a result, there is a tendency of such channels to target the wrong audience – calling for the need for further research with empirical evidence. Public Relations Review, 2005
This paper analyzes the use of the Internet as a public relations tool by 20 government and private organizations in the United Arab Emirates. It concludes that, among other findings, UAE public relations staff members continue to play their traditional role in real world situations but when it comes to online communications, they do not seem to have a big say in controlling the flow of information to the public. This may suggest that what appears online about a certain organization may be in tune with what is carried out in real world communications.
Whether targeting the public or the media especially journalist or editors, websites exist to ensure the information is available for people to access based on few criteria. This paper intends to explore the utilization of webpage in conveying Public Relation (PR) communication between Islamic higher learning institutions. Qualitative content analysis method was used to compare the differences in PR perspective between Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), Univeristi Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (UIAM) and Kolej Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Selangor (KUIS) websites. The findings of this study indicated that the webpages analyzed were relatively interactive in nature and that they are focusing on the important PR elements and strategies. In conclusion, more often than not, the three websites analyzed consider the PR aspects of the design and taking into account the nature of the web community who wants fast and usable information that can educate rather than told.
