Übermensch: Nietzsche, Salome and the Ages of Aquarius
This study explores the origins of the exile of the feminine in continental philosophy. "Übermensch: Salomé, Nietzsche & the Ages of Aquarius" is a comprehensive excavation of a "will to power" only made possible through the occult apparatus which Schopenhauer proclaimed as the basis for a new philosophy. The occult tools of numerology, astrology, and alchemy are applied to the phenomenology surrounding Nietzsche's love affair with Lou Salomé to establish ontological proof for the re-enactment of the Sumerian rite of the hieros gamos (the sacred marriage). The recurrence of the pre-patriarchal mythology within an Aquarian mythology of equal partnership is itself a reflection of the cosmology of the 1882 Venus Transit of the Sun, returning in 2012 as the ontology for this paper commenced. The apparatus is revealed in the coding of the title: Übermensch is the Third entity, a literary marriage of Über/Mensch. The archetype associated with the Third entity reflects a paradigm shift from linear time (which uses number as a tool) to cyclical time (which honors the autonomy of number). Within this holistic perspective, “Übermensch” is Nietzsche's encoding through the rhythmic language of Thus Spoke Zarathustra of the ancient symbol of the Ouroboros. The conversion of Nietzsche from scholar to poet/prophet took place during the crucial 1882 pregnancy (nine months) that led to the advent of a new religion based on the integration of opposites. From the Spring Equinox to the Winter Solstice and the December 7 conjunction of Venus with the Sun, Nietzsche created the operatic phenomenology that would make Lou Salomé his human projection of the Übermensch while revealing the timing of their brief but profound leap into the hieros gamos as the cosmology of the descent and return (of Venus). In creating an Aquarian icon out of Salomé, Nietzsche lobbed his new science into the midst of the 20th century. Laurence Rickels connects the 1882 Dreieinigkeit of Nietzsche/Salomé/Rée to Nietzsche’s earlier establishment of a portal for the emergence of his intellectual Doppelgänger. Rickels’ resulting "Perse-phone Bobbin" theory establishes the medial woman as the dual sender/receiver of occult signals. I follow Salomé's conversion from Nietzsche's student to philosopher through the Rickelsian version of the famous fort/da game as her passage, beginning in 1882, from Nietzsche to Freud. In 1912 Salomé reinvented the Dreieinigkeit as the Oedipal triad of mother (Salomé), father (Freud) and son (Tausk). The inspiration for this new balanced construction in her Perse-phone rebound from Nietzsche to Freud can be found in her 1914 masterwork: “The Devil and his Grandmother.” In this hybrid work, stitching theater to the new celluloid medium, Salomé rescues the devil from Christian associations with evil by reclaiming the original association of this proactive force with the Morning Star. Her deconstruction of the Christian symbolic structure, which she commenced with Nietzsche, was now complete. Yet, Salomé’s return in 1912 as a member of Freud's circle coincided with the departure of Sabina Spielrein. In resurrecting the mythology of Morning Star, this study was obligated to do the same with Hesperus, the Evening Star. In fact, the reflective inward face of Venus was personified by Spielrein, the “pure player,” who overcame her situation as Jung's patient and mistress to become the Rickelsian "Bobbin" entering Freud's circle with a new (r)evolutionary theorem: "Destruction as the Cause of Becoming". Dismissed by the one-sidedness of patriarchal thinking at the time as a projected excess of ambivalence, Spielrein's dual force of destruction/creation is newly defined by this study in terms of the Shakti/Kundalini. While this force of unity in the tension of duality entered continental philosophy from Hindu philosophy as Schopenhauer’s will, it was stowaway in psychoanalysis with the rise, fall, and reinvention of Carl Jung, who received the unity of the collective unconscious out of the depths from his sexual relation with Spielrein.
The Science of Magic: Technology of the Sentient
The cross-disciplinary inquiry as to whether Artificial Intelligence is capable of an evolving self-awareness places the electronic arts in the hot seat. Heidegger left it to the arts to resolve the matter of a holistic ontology of Being. In 2020, this sentience reflects the leap in quantum physics characterizing a new decade of inner/outer space exploration. Antiquated interpretations of the Copenhagen Collapse as contingent on the consciousness of a physical observer brings us into the Age of Entanglement. New leaps towards holism in quantum physics, along with recent cross-disciplinary breakthroughs in the academy, are rapidly transforming this debate into a new pedagogy requiring an integral perspective for hermeneutics reflecting the inner/outer process identified by philosophy as the Möbius strip. This paper presents a decade of groundbreaking experimental electronic arts mattering/mothering the sentient/spectral as a contemporary praxis incorporating ancient technologies synchronizing human co-creation with the rotational movements and interrelationships of heavenly bodies. The ontological ART-I-FACT of an ancient praxis of the hieros gamos (sacred marriage) is rendered a new constant of the Intergender Third via the wedding of biological corps to electronic corpus, demonstrating The Science of Magic methodology operates in the Third Space between cosmos and psyche.
"Paul is Dead" at 50: A Science of Magic Excavation
hierosgamosjournal, 2019
PAUL IS DEAD is a subject ripe for mediological excavation requiring occult tools that have always factored into interpretations of Beatles' messaging. The time and place to introduce a new " Science of Magic " with its forbidden apparatus into the academy has never been better. Conspiracy theories surrounding Paul McCartney have been ramped up after the release of his new album Egypt Station and triumphant Freshen Up World Tour ending in July, while a virtual stream of mediology phenomenology (here is one from Revolver where the band's transformation began) about The Beatles' creative process keeps the online investigations fresh. There is always something new to discover, which keeps the discussion open-ended. This article will examine the evolution of PID over the past half century to its current digital status in relation to other conspiracy theories: Sept 11 as an "inside job;" the JFK assassination; the ritual murder of Princess Diana; and QAnon examined by Ethan Zuckerman in the first installment of JoDS #6: Unreal. In order to make effective comparisons, hermeneutics apparatus (astrology, numerology, alchemy) pioneered in the European Graduate School laboratory will be utilized to explore eight topics: tech, bibles, origins, hermeneutics, semiotics, phenomenology, Gesamtkunstwerk and metaphysics.
Hermeneutics of New Modernism, 2017
Feminism needs to be saved…from itself. Lurching into its fourth wave through the eruption of a new gender war in the contentious US election, the movement can no longer blame the patriarchy for its own shortcomings. It is time for feminist warriors on the front lines to face their shadow; the embodiment of their own reductionist dualism critique within the framework of the politically correct straightjacket governing Neo-Liberal society for over two decades. The degree to which the echo chamber between the binary “talking heads” of the corporate media and faulty polling mechanisms demonstrated how decades of the politically correct social standard triggered the Trumped up collective body during the US election is shocking: lacking new philosophical input, the movement —which now includes many men —is reduced to the slap of dismissive labels – sexist, misogynist, racist, Alt-right or whatever else doesn’t fit into socially prescribed thinking. In this battle, there is no room for truth, never mind the Deleusian-Gautteri “Thousand Plateaus” beyond the binary imposed by the corporate elite. A Deleuzian observer may surmise that what lies ahead is the path to a transgender embodiment —in the individual and collective — as a magnetic force balancing the opposites. This elevated position reflects an avant-garde value of gender as fluid relation between opposites. The Deleuzian-Guattari marriage provides a needed perspective of the present day battle for equality in which the internalized feminist vocabulary are projected outwards as media missives. The offspring of this marriage is a language that effectively circumnavigates binary reductionism of the military industrial complex responsible for the proliferation of the Ad Hominem attack in a sound bite or Twitter rant characterizing the 2016 election.
The 17 th century brings along in Transylvania fashionable art movements of the Western and Central Europe, especially of the new artistic current of the Mannerism, a constant of the funeral art to the 70's of the century, continued by the Proto-Baroque. They are an acquisition of aristocratic and urban forms submitted by Venetian and Dutch layers, which meant introducing a new and eclectic language of reassembling forms. The motifs do not hide 'horror vacui', strongly twisted tenants, 'putti', 'rotuli' (rolls), garlands of exotic fruit and flowers, trophies and allegories twined in the theme "vanitas vanitatum". The study proposes a contextual analysis of the motifs from the range of weapons and trophies emerging in this age in the Transylvanian funeral art.
"Magic and Media" in Media-N, 2012. (Chair, Moderator, Guest Editor Mina Cheon)
Media-N Vol 8 No 1 (2012): CAA Conference Edition 2012, Journal of New Media Caucus (NMC) Affiliate Society of College Art Association (CAA) , 2012
On February 23, 2012, “Magic and Media,” a New Media Caucus sponsored panel was held at the College Art Association 100th Annual Conference in Los Angeles at the Convention Center. It was chaired by Mina Cheon with co-chair Lisa Paul Streitfeld and included a dynamic group of speakers: Laurence A. Rickels, Sue Taylor, Rita Alves, and Evan Malater. ABSTRACT The panel investigates the relationship between magic and media in the age of new media culture. From freak (reality) shows, horror flicks and the scholarship of vampirism to new-agey re-creations of religious cults, on-line spiritual healing and pop-star worship, we live in an age where the often-separated realms of magic and media intersect in phantasmagoric ways, exposing fragments of our chaotic humanity, cultural diversity and limbo existence. The panelists are gathered for their distinctive interpretation of new media culture, while the panel charts an arc of psychoanalysis as a way to newly define the relationship between magic and media.
The Remediation of Epic Mythology in Digital Narratives
2014
Examination of epic mythologies in the post-modern world demonstrates that the epic as a mediation of traditional mythic meanings has failed to attach to traditional representations of some version of the real. Instead, contemporary use of the epic incorporate the postmodern condition of capitalism, consumerism, the location as spectacle, technology and global homogeneity as givens. Despite this, epic mythologies continued to survive as narratives that society still tells to children using new media as the means of storytelling through games, products, television, film, and printed forms that emphasized the image and the media over the text. Through the implosion of images, the development of new visual medias, the expansion of the hardware and software globally, and the promotion of a world of virtual-reality, a return to epic mythology as the subject of transmedial storytelling is occurring as a narrative rich in immersion, continuance, and expansion for many version in many different media of storytelling.
Johannes Baccalaureus Grabplatte 2012
Press Review: STEFANO CAGOL. WORKS 1995|2015 Galleria CIVICA
Civic gallery, Trento 25 MARCH 2016 / 12 JUNE 2016 Sixteen years after his first solo exhibition in a museum, organised by the Mart at its former historic venue of Palazzo delle Albere, the works of Stefano Cagol return to Trento in a solo exhibition curated by Margherita de Pilati and Denis Isaia. The show offers an overview of the many projects with which Stefano Cagol has developed a reflection on current events and social and cultural phenomena, interpreting them in an ironic, controversial and scathing manner. In this chronological exhibition, the various phases of the artist's career are illustrated, from the early experiments concerning the language of video, to the most recent projects like “The Body of Energy (of the mind)”, produced by the Germany RWE foundation and presented in a solo exhibition in Berlin and in a dozen European museums. About 40 works will be on display, including the itinerant projects that have for years characterised Cagol’s work, participatory projects, like the one realised at the Ilva of Taranto, and the work presented in the Maldives Pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennale “The ice monolith”. http://www.mart.trento.it/mostre.jsp?ID\_LINK=682&area=137&id\_context=5780
