Physical Education and Sport in Schools: A Review of Benefits and Outcomes

This paper explores the scientific evidence that has been gathered on the contributions and benefits of physical education and sport (PES) in schools for both children and for educational systems. Research evidence is presented in terms of children’s development in a number of domains: physical, lifestyle, affective, social, and cognitive. The review suggests that PES have the potential to make significant and distinctive contributions to development in each of these domains. It is suggested that PES have the potential to make distinctive contributions to the development of children’s fundamental movement skills and physical competences, which are necessary precursors of participation in later lifestyle and sporting physical activities. They also, when appropriately presented, can support the development of social skills and social behaviors, self-esteem and proschool attitudes, and, in certain circumstances, academic and cognitive development. The review also stresses that many of these benefits will not necessarily result from participation, per se; the effects are likely to be mediated by the nature of the interactions between students and their teachers, parents, and coaches who work with them. Contexts that emphasize positive experiences, characterized by enjoyment, diversity, and the engagement of all, and that are managed by committed and trained teachers and coaches, and supportive and informed parents, significantly influence the character of these physical activities and increase the likelihood of realizing the potential benefits of participation.

However, recent research has revealed that physical education plays a vital role in providing a well-rounded education. Physical education and sports are associated with a wide range of benefits. Firstly, physical education promotes overall physical and emotional health of primary school children. Additionally, physical education provides an opportunity for social growth and increased cultural competence among primary school children. Further, it fosters cognitive competence, leading to improved performance in examinations. Finally, physical education at the primary school level instills a positive lifestyle among students, encouraging them to adopt healthy habits throughout adulthood. In addition to these benefits, this paper delves into the pitfalls of taking children out of physical education during examination preparation, underscores the critical role of instructors in delivering physical education, and highlights the significance of having adequately trained and qualified educators in teaching physical education and sports lessons.

Sport, physical activity and educational achievement – towards an explanatory model

Sport and other forms of physical activities have traditionally held an ambiguous place within schooling, often being pushed to the margins. At the same time, there is a consensus that such activities are necessary for the healthy development of young people. This was proven during the second half of the last century, representing a revolution in the understanding of health. Recent developments in neurology, psychology and related sciences hint at a second revolution in which a strict distinction between mind and body has become redundant. This article examines the case that sport and physical activity can make distinctive contributions to educational achievement, and a host of wider benefits. Focusing on cognitive functioning, psychosocial development, school engagement and general educational attainment, the article reviews the available evidence and concludes that there is sufficient reason to believe that sports and physical activity can make useful contributions to educational achievement.

Educational Review Sport, physical education and educational worth

“Evaluating the relationship between physical education, sport and social inclusion”, published in Educational Review in 2005 was concerned formally with an analysis of the potential role of sport and physical education (PE) within the social policy agenda of Blair’s New Labour Government. It was also a contribution to a wider, ongoing programme that sought to understand and articulate the social and educational value of physical activities. Marginalisation within the school curriculum has been a perennial threat throughout the history of PE, so a clear and compelling account of their value has both academic and practical relevance. I take the opportunity presented by this Special Issue to discuss aspects of this wider research programme, its aims, obstacles and ambitions. The 2005 article was written primarily from a social policy perspective. This sequel turns mainly to philosophy to examine some of the perennial issues of educational values and human well-being.
