Project Managers’ Personality and Project Success: Moderating Role of External Environmental Factors

Successful project completion is a challenging phenomenon for project managers. Various factors play an indispensable role in the success of a project. The objective of this study is to examine the role of project managers’ personalities in project success with the moderating role of external environmental factors i.e., political, economic, social. The study includes 145 project managers from 36 large-scale construction projects, from both the public and private sectors. The big five personality model was used to evaluate the personality traits of project managers and triple constraint criteria (cost, time, and quality) was used to gauge project success. Data has been collected through a well-structured questionnaire. A convenient sample of 202 managers engaged in an advanced project management educational program, responded to the Big Five Personality® and the Myers-Briggs (MBTI®) personality assessments. Personality traits of project managers: differences in knowledge, experience, and business sector

This study aims to verify if there is any difference in the personality traits of Project Managers with different professional backgrounds – training, experience, and business sector (public or private). Using as theoretical basis the Big Five personality traits, this research was conducted with 244 Project Managers who work in Brazil. The results of tests of mean differences between groups showed that Project Managers with more experience have the trait agreeableness more pronounced than managers with less experience, while Project Managers with more schooling have a higher Conscientiousness, Openness to Experience, and Emotional Stability than Managers with less schooling. Project Managers who work in the public and private sectors showed different personality traits between themselves, and only for agreeableness no significant difference was found. Conscientiousness personality trait defines the competent Greek project manager

Project managers' (PMs) performance greatly affect their construction companies' profitability. Forty-seven required attributes of a PM were prioritised through a structured questionnaire survey. These attributes were assigned to groups with the aid of the 'big five personality traits' and identified as selection criteria. Simos method was implemented to determine the weights of the criteria. Seven classifications were proposed, including: 'conscientiousness', 'cognitive abilities', 'extraversion', 'agreeableness', 'capabilities', 'openness' and 'other qualifications'. The 'conscientiousness' personality trait received most of the identified attributes. Seven hypothetical PM profiles were created that directly corresponded to each of the proposed Conscientiousness personality trait defines the competent Greek PM 351 classifications. These seven profiles were ranked using PROMETHEE multi-criteria methodology. The resulting ranking from the most to the less competent one is: conscientiousness, cognitive abilities, extraversion, agreeableness, capabilities, openness and other qualifications.

The fit between project managers' personality and management style and the types of projects they manage is crucial for projects' success. This exploratory interdisciplinary study focuses on the relationships among three aspects: projects' types (profiles), project managers' personality, and projects' success. Based on the person-organization fit theory it was hypothesized that a project with a particular profile needs a manager with fitting personality traits in order to achieve optimal performance and success. A questionnaire, consisting of three parts was used: (1) classifying projects along the four dimensions (novelty, complexity, technology, and pace [NCTP]); (2) focusing on project managers' personality traits relevant to these project dimensions; and (3) assessing the projects' success from several perspectives. Preliminary results lend tentative support to the study's hypothesis.
Personality Types of Master of Science in Project Management Students: A Field Study

In this research study, students enrolled in a university Master of Science in Project Management degree program were asked to respond to the Big Five personality inventory to ascertain whether their personality traits were in alignment with Big Five Leadership profile proposed by Lussier and Achua (2013) or were ranked similarly with the general population. Additionally, this study sought to explore whether university project management master degree students’ Big Five personalities were aligned with the suggested Big Five profile for project managers. The ranking of the Big Five leadership categories of 172 project management students was compared to rankings in previous studies. High work efficiency is required by today’s organizations. Besides of other factors it depends on the right allocation of employed workers to their duties. Assigning employees to the right activities isn’t an easy task, because the job efficiency and differences in human nature have to be considered simultaneously. Usually, the decision undertaken by the human resource (HR) manager is based on his subjective experience. In several cases, such solution results in negative reactions of employees, and may lead to conflicts occurrence. In order to avoid them the problem of allocation of the properly selected team (taking into account workers’ personality) to the project’s activity is of crucial importance. Its right solution can decrease risk of activity execution delay. So, it is assumed the project’s completion time depends both on physical and psychological features of employed workers. Experimental results presented illustrate this approach.
Researching MBTI Personality Types: Project Management Master’s Degree Students

The purpose of this research study was twofold: 1) to explore if a university’s Master of Science in Project Management students’ MBTI personalities differ significantly; 2) to gain a better understanding if the MBTI personality traits of university students enrolled in a project management degree differ significantly from those MBTI personalities of the general population. The goodness of fit test was used in order to test the hypotheses that the 177 graduate project management students (observed data) have the same MBTI distribution as in the general population (expected data). Overall, the present study showed that the student population has 27.18% fewer SF classifications than the general population and 15.99% more NT and 19.15% more ST classifications than the general population.
