A.-K. WASSILIOU-SEIBT and CH. STAVRAKOS (eds.) STUDIES IN BYZANTINE SIGILLOGRAPHY Vol. XIII (original) (raw)
ADALYA, vol. 21, 2018
In this article, twelve Byzantine lead seals found during the excavations of 2010-2017 in Kibyra Magna are, published. The inscriptions on these seals show that they formerly belonged to persons who can be identified with certain administrative and fiscal officials. They served between the 7th to early 8th centuries in the strategiai of the Anatolikoi and of the Kibyrraiotai, which then developed independently of the other themes. The seals in question include: those of an archon (Georgios) and two apo eparchontes (Pantoleon and Eusebios), a chartoularios (Theophylactos), a protector or protiktor (Martinos), and two prelates (Zotikos and Prokopios) who are thought to be the bishops of Kibyra Magna. The remaining five seals fall into anonymous category since no authority or family name of their owner is depicted on them. This study aims to present and evaluate their data concerning the history of the city and the region. Keywords: Kibyra Magna, Byzantine sigillography, lead seals, monograms.

The Origin and the Members of the Kamytzes Family. A Contribution to Byzantine Prosopography
Dumbarton Oaks Papers 72, 2018
The article examines the origin, the social profile and the career of the members of hitherto not systematical presented and discussed Kamytzes family, whose Greek origin is considerablymore probable than the Turkish one. The new sigillographical evidence proves that the thesis about a migration of the family under Alexios I (1081-1118) to Byzantium is erroneous and must be rejected. The family belonged already to the military aristocracy before the middle of the eleventh century. The social rise of the Kamytzai in the framework of the Komnenian system is attested in the early 12th c. The rebellion of Manuel Kamytzes against the regime of Alexios III was the reason for the only brief social decline of the family. After the capture of Constantinople by the Latins the family migrated to the court of the Lascarids in Nicaea. The decline of the Kamytzai there is connected with the coronation of Michael VIII. After that date no more members are recorded in high positions, but the family continued to belong to the aristocracy till the fourteenth century abd was connected by marriage with the Batatzai.
