An Integrative Review on the Research Progress of Mindfulness and Its Implications at the Workplace

Mindfulness has rapidly become a significant subject area in many disciplines. Most of the work on mindfulness has focused on the perspective of health and healthcare professionals, but relatively less research is focused on the organizational outcomes at the workplace. This review presents a theoretical and practical trajectory of mindfulness by sequential integration of recent fragmented scholarly work on mindfulness at the workplace. The review showcases that most contemporary practical challenges in organizations, such as anxiety, stress, depression, creativity, motivation, leadership, relationships, teamwork, burnout, engagement, performance, well-being, and physical and psychological health, could be addressed successfully with the budding concept of mindfulness. In this paper, the authors explore the breakthrough of human consciousness and how mindfulness practice immensely contributes to this endeavor. They discuss the inherent problem of the contemporary workplace: the pain and suffering; physiologically, psychologically, and emotionally, due to myriad reasons, such as incivility, mismanagement of change, unhealthy competition and the consequential breakdown of relationships, leading to a weakening of the socio-biological immune-system. The paper then attempts to prove that mindfulness practice opens the possibilities for healing by cultivating humane qualities such as compassion, kindness, and the promotion of physio-psychological well-being. Thereby, argues that mindfulness practice improves cognitive functions, collective inquiry by unearthing one's internal picture of the world, and ushering a new level of consciousness, which may pave a pathway toward creating a learning organization.

The paper presents the importance, basic determinants, as well as the best world practice of one of the leading insurance companies in Europe, If P&C Insurance and technology giant Google in the field of application of innovative Mindfulness concept with the aim of improving the total performances of employees. The above examples are addressed in the argument of growing importance and broader application of the innovative concept towards the development of employee potential through the development of emotional intelligence, cognitive abilities, but also through stress reduction. The main goal is to point out to the management of companies, as well as to other authors and researchers, the importance of this concept, which gives ever more positive results in the direction of improving the overall performance of employees and, consequently, the overall performance of organizations in order to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage.
This paper focuses on the current state of art in mindfulness research on workplace and identifies some of the necessary steps and risks in the creation of mindful leadership theory. Mindfulness has the potential to effectively address three topical organizational challenges of growing demands on adaptability, prevailing issues of work-related stress and the necessity to raise the moral level in organizations. Current studies seem to suitably respond to the issues of work-related stress; however, the challenges of adaptability and morality so far lack appropriate empirical validation. Lack of empirical support is also noticeable in the case of mindful leadership theory as most studies still focus solely on individual leader development. However, it is important to start to discuss the suitable core variables of mindful leadership now as a clear differentiation from other leadership approaches like authentic leadership will be crucial for successful creation of mindful leadership theory. This paper also presents recommendations for entrepreneurs and managers willing to incorporate mindfulness into their organizational settings.

Mindfulness has emerged as one of the major strategies for the well-being of employees in the current corporate world. As the workspace continues to evolve due to technological and structural advancement, employees face difficulty coping and lack the desired agility. The present study is a systematic review of around a hundred scientific papers and various books and business research articles from the period of 2000-2021 focusing on mindfulness and employee wellness research from various journals such as Jama Psychiatry, Applied Psychology: Health and Well-being, journals from Frontier Psychology and Emerald Publications, and others. The study aims to explore mindfulness and its applications across various vocational sectors, with particular emphasis on its potential relevance to the Indian population. The study also discusses the evolution of mindfulness, its implications for improving work culture and leadership, and its application in various workplaces. As there are very few mindfulness-based studies conducted on the Indian working population, the present study helps to bridge the gap and recommends future studies to be conducted on the Indian population to establish concrete scientific evidence on the possible impact of mindfulness on employees' vocational lives. The paper makes a unique contribution by analyzing the potential for enhancement through mindfulness in various vocational sectors and also identifies a strong scope for research in the emerging areas of corporate agility and robot-assisted interventions.

Mindfulness trainings are increasingly offered in workplace environments in order to improve health and productivity. Whilst promising, there is limited research on the effectiveness of mindfulness interventions in workplace settings. To examine the feasibility and effectiveness of a Workplace Mindfulness Training (WMT) in terms of burnout, psychological well-being, organizational and team climate, and performance. This is a preliminary field study in four companies. Self-report questionnaires were administered up to a month before, at start of, and right at the end of the WMT, resulting in a pre-intervention and an intervention period. There was no separate control group. A total of 425 participants completed the surveys on the different time points. Linear mixed model analyses were used to analyze the data.
