The life of manuscripts and books during the 2003 occupation of Iraq

2021

Before the US-led invasion in 2003 looting did occur but it never went to such extremes as it did after 2003. In spite of the precautions major libraries undertook many lost much of their holdings; they were burnt or stolen. This is illustrated by losses of the Iraq National Library and Archives, the House of Manuscripts, the Central Awqaf Library, the House of Wisdom, other University collections and Public libraries. Till, today the libraries never fully recovered. The library buildings were first stripped of items with an obvious resale value, and later a second wave of well-organized looters stole the precious manuscripts and books. It is unknown where the stolen treasures went to; firstly because of outdated catalogues and secondly because of the loss of a number of card catalogues. Unfortunately, there is very little evidence of Iraqi manuscripts and ancient books appearing in auction catalogues or internet sales. This is my own English translation with additional data of the chapter 'Irak.
