The Born-Global Phenomenon in Creative Industries: the Case of Lithuanian Animation Industry
Proceedings of 5th International Scientific Conference Contemporary Issues in Business, Management and Education ‘2017, 2017
The born-global phenomenon has been studied for over a two decades, but theory and practice are still evolving, therefore understanding how the phenomenon operates in different countries and industries is crucial. This paper aims to contribute to a better understanding of the born-global phenomenon in context of creative industries. A literature review was conducted in order to identify the nature of creative profile enterprises and international process characteristics in creative industries. Authors conducted a quantitative questionnaire with seventeen enterprises from Lithuanian animation industry. Drawing from empirical evidence, it was found that the born-globals perceive internationalization primary as a means to increase the scope of creative projects, and only then as a way to increase income. Findings as well have shown that most of Lithuanian animation studios are born-global as they started international operations within three years from enterprises’ establishment.
In recent years many strategies for collaboration between industry, government, and academia have been developed. Such 'triple helix' collaboration boosts regional innovation and has been successful in the creative industries. With increased global interaction, use of this triple helix model for collaboration between two countries is a growing trend. This paper deepens the discussion by introducing a social agent to illustrate the challenges and the potential impacts on organizations from cooperating countries. A new model based on both theory and practice is provided in this paper. It delineates the innovative role of a social agent in catalyzing the hexa-lateral collaborations. Dutch Design Post, a non-profit organization established to bridge the triple helices of Netherlands and Taiwan serves as the case example to explain the new model. This new model has wide relevance for application in other contexts.

This dissertation examines an underexplored type of innovation - the discovery of new resources. Schumpeter distinguishes among five types of innovation: new products, new processes, new organizations, new markets, and new resources. Most prior work has focused on the first three types of innovation. This study focuses on the last type of innovation, the discovery of new resources, in creative industries where talent is the most important resource of creativity and profit. This dissertation is comprised of three chapters. Each of the chapters examines a strategy or an environmental change such as unbundling, digitalization, and cross-border acquisition which may facilitate or weaken the discovery of new talent and experiment with new artists. In the first chapter, I explore the impact of unbundling on the discovery of new talent. The results highlight the trade-off between breadth-oriented experimentation (experimenting with more new alternatives by producing unbundled products) and...

This report reviews the status of domestic creative economy ecosystem development, benchmarks creative economy focused policies and models in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and the Republic of Korea (South Korea), and gives recommendations on how to support cross-sectoral use of creative competencies in ecosystem development in Finland. In the review of creative economy in Finland, creative activities are grouped into four categories (creative and cultural products, creative content, creative services, creative environments and platforms) that differ from each other in terms of value creation logic, easiness of scalability and recycling of intangible value, and the role of interaction and communities in the value creation process. This categorisation has been applied in updating the creative sector fact sheets. International benchmarking shows that official recognition, champions and organisations are needed to establish a common voice for creative sector actors. These have had...
