Indian Painters: A citadel of creativity

Drawing and picture painting are two of the oldest arts, but it is rather a peculiar experience that those who visit a drawing and painting exhibition, rarely show any will to understand the exhibits. We are normally unaware that it gives us a special joy, increases our maturity of thinking. The ability to understand the shot began to acquire importance while we see a film or a serial one the screen. But we are still indifferent to drawing and painting literacy. This article is an attempt to make readers a part of this tour de force of the process of the cameraman Nemai Ghosh, who has to his credit the photography of fifty two artists.
The study of Indian art should begin with some question. But how was this art made? What were its guidelines? What was its purpose? These answers emerge from the study of Indian philosophy at large and Indian aesthetics in particular. This paper aims to present an overview of aesthetics in the tradition of Indian art, as it has been understood right from the Vedic to this day. With a basis of art theories from ancient treatises this paper hopes to present a brief view of what is considered the best and beautiful in art.

W hen you go to the market or to a museum you will find many paintings, wall hangings or work done on terracotta. Do you know that these paintings have their origin in ouir ancient past. They depict the life and customs followed by the people of those times. They also show how the kings and queens dressed or how the courtiers sat in the royal assembly. The Phenomenal and the Cultural in Contemporary Paintings from Indian Diaspora

Contemporary painting is a complex practice that incorporates elements of different media and bear diverse historical and cultural influences. Contemporary painting from South-East Asian diaspora is no less different. In this paper an attempt has been made to analyze a few contemporary painters’ work in light of phenomenological theory. Merleau-Ponty’s (1993, 2004, 2008) theory of embodiment and phenomenology of perception has been used to show how the fusion of material exploration, embodied engagement with the lived environment, and knowledge of art-historical and contemporary trend results in creation of painting. It was also shown that the artists discussed are adept at combining cultural and sensual components in their painting thus creating works of art that has a broad cross-cultural appeal. It was argued that a theoretical lens that pays due attention to material and sensual aspects of art can open-up new horizon of analysis.
