Abstract Translation plays an important role in communication among people. It is special type of communication which is accompanied by many challenges, because the translator has to convey the message into another language and readers. Translation has become independent discipline in the last three decades of 20th century and it has its own scholars, theories and schools all over the world. The study has aimed at realizing the difficulties of translation process and the reasons behind them to raise the competency of the novice translators so as to present high quality translation. This paper has used analytical descriptive approach and chosen the questionnaire to collect the data. The questionnaire has distributed to the sample of the study, this sample contains 40 participants from the translation teaching staffs and translators. The answers of the participants in the questionnaire are 54.03% strongly agree and 32.30% agree. The participants’ response in the questionnaire verifies the 7 hypotheses of this study. The important findings of this study that the new translators had weak knowledge on the concept, theories and strategies of translation, also the novice translators were unable to indentify translation problems and how to overcome these problems. The study has recommended the necessity of training the new translators to realize translation problems and how to overcome them. Also the new translator has to study the translation theories and its strategies. Besides be trained in choosing the suitable equivalence in the TL. The study also has recommended avoiding literal translation so as translation looks natural (the target readers not feel it is translation). The study has suggested further researches in the written translation strategies and specialized translation such as legal or scientific translation.
The Translator‘s Viewpoints, the Translation Process, and the Translation Products
2017
A translator‘s viewpoints about the accuracy, acceptability, and readibility of translation are assumed to affect the translation process and products. The purpose of this study was, therefore, (1) to prove the relationship among the three things, namely translator‘s viewpoints, translation processes, and translation quality and (2) to figure out if there was any mismatch. To confirm the translator‘s viewpoints, the researcher conducted an interview with the translator. Furthermore, to verify the effect of the translator‘s viewpoints on the process, the translator was assigned to translate a given text and to be interviewed as soon as the translator finished doing the assignment. Finally, the translation products especially their accuracy, acceptability, and readibility were analyzed in order to know their relationship with the two things previously mentioned. The result showed that translator‘s viewpoints really matched translation process and, in the following turn, matched the pr...
Methodological remarks on the study of translation and translating
Disciplinary identity depends on how the disciplinary research object is conceived of. If translation studies is a discipline studying translation and translating, it is natural that it can define its identity at the intersection between translation and translating. This intersection is translation process. The need for an epistemological description of translation process arises form the need to make the process describable or to find a possibility of its optimum description. To do this translation studies needs an elementary model of translation process that would ensure the comparability of di¤er-ent translations and describability of translation culture. New interest in the evaluation of translation quality and in the linguistic nature of translation brings along the necessity to reconceptualize di¤erent trends in translation studies. Translation studies is on the verge of a new self-description, and the language and attitudes of this self-description should derive from a systemic understanding of the research object of translation studies.
An Introduction to Translation Studies: An Overview
This study aims to observe the development of translation studies through three concepts of descriptive translation studies; product-based, process-based, and functionalbased translation studies. The readers are introduced to some famous translation scholars including their view of translation studies. At the further discussions, this study lets the readers to acknowledge the main issues on translation studies, focusing on the debate of equivalence versus variations in intertextual texts analysis. Some tendencies of variations, such as different grammar and sentence structure, diglossia leakage, and pragmatic consideration are also presented to present to what extent variations occur during investigation processes. Therefore, regarding those tendencies, this study is closed by the description of Matthiessen's proposals about points of consideration to construct a parameter to measure meaning variations. This study may help those who are interested to conduct translation researches and help them by giving options of which theories is beneficial to their analysis.
Measuring and Mapping Various Linguistic Problems in Translation
IJARESM, 2021
The paper tries to unveil the different dimensions of difficulties in literary translation. Attempts have been taken especially to focus on the mechanism of translation and problems during it. Translation is a vehicle by which meaning is transmitted by means of transformation of language. That means a text gets transmitted into another text with the same spirit and same objectives. That is called the meaning of the text. Some can call it 'the collective target' of the text. Translation in true spirit is a geometric drive from one language to another which draws a parabolic trajectory at end of the process. But the problem is that when one tries to throw the text or the spirit of the text into another one there remains every possibility of missing the perfect trajectory. It is a process of transplantation of brain and heart of the text from one body to another body. Therefore, a little carelessness may drive the target body/person (text) into the arena of a chronic and persistent disorder and dementia. A whole hearted translation will bring a successful product and synchronously the reverse will harvest the realm of irregularity and unjust. This causes due to various obstacles during the drive or operation.
Translation Competence & the Translator
Academia Letters, 2021
Each translation activity has one or more special purposes, and whatever it may be, the main object of translation among people to understand each other is being a tool for transferring information from one language to a different one. The translation is the process of converting information from a language to another: the goal is to comprehend accurately the verbal and grammatical characteristics of the "original language" and transfer them into the "target language". At the same time, all real information must be preserved in the original language translation. In the past few decades, this activity has developed due to the expansion of international trade, the increase of immigration, globalization, the realization of linguistic limitations, and the expansion of mass media and technology. For this reason, the translator has assumed an important role as a bilingual or multilingual transmitter and as a transmitter of culture and facts through his attempt to interpret ideas and discourse in various texts with the utmost honesty and accuracy. If translation is an interwoven process of communication between language and thought, then we must consider it an art or a skill, hence its difficulty. Being a translator is a hard job, sometimes putting him\her in a desperate situation, but it is also a rich and necessary work that requires honesty and moderation. Translators and translation students cannot avoid the problems they encounter in translation. According to Nord (1991), the translation problem is "an objective problem that the translator must solve during a particular translation task." There are different types of translation problems; in short, there may be pragmatic, meta
Extra-linguistic Constraints & Parameters in the Translation Process: A Descriptive Study
World Journal of English Language, 2013
The translation process at its macro level is seen here as an activity regulated by a number of factors. Translators are not working randomly in their own rights, but rather they work for, and are affiliated to, specific companies, publishing houses, organizations, and the like. These bodies have developed over time certain criteria and descriptions for selecting, representing and consuming the translated materials. As such, when deciding their global strategy, translators and all parties involved in the translation process at its macro level encounter a plethora of constraints and parameters. Some of these constraints and parameters are driven by the text per se while others come from outside, i.e. non-verbal constraints, such as the relationship between the interfacing cultures, the master discourse of translation, the power of patronage, the type of audience, the purpose of translation, generic conventions and discourse constraints. The central focus of this study is to explore the main parameters and constraints faced by translators and all those involved in the translation process. The final shape of the target text is seen here as a result of a process in which translators, and other parties, do their best to accommodate the constraints imposed on them and to adopt what they deem to be an appropriate strategy or strategies. It has been shown that the final shape of the translation is determined not only by the text-driven constraints and parameters imposed on the part of the translator, but by both verbal constraints (i.e. text-driven constraints) and non-verbal constraints, i.e. extra-linguistic constraints. The relationship between constraints and strategies is not a one-to-one relationship, but rather the strategy is sometimes a result of more than one constraint.
Translation Strategies, Methods and Techniques: In Pursuit of Translation Adequacy
RESEARCH TRENDS IN MODERN LINGUISTICS AND LITERATURE
The present paper examines the ways of achieving adequacy in translation. The aim of the study is to define and describe the options that the different translators choose while rendering the message of the same source text (ST) and to establish the translation adequacy conditions. The translators’ options are considered in terms of the techniques employed to achieve equivalence between the textual micro units of the original and those of the target text (TT). It is argued that the choice of the translation techniques is determined by the global translation strategy which is seen as a translator’s action plan to reach the functional identification between the ST and TT. In the course of translating the corresponding techniques are used by the translators to fit the local strategies which necessitate the specific ways of dealing with translation challenges. In order to identify formal, semantic and communicative features of the translators’ options we set out the specific task of expl...
Translation -A Subconscious Construct
The more fluent the translation, the more 'invisible' is the translator, and the more visible is the meaning of the 'new' text. Viewed in this light, translation cannot be limited to being just an academic activity or exercise-it is a felt experience in which the possibilities of the subject to become infinite are indeed infinite. A good translation, in fact, of a work of Shakespeare or Goethe or Milton, leads one to comprehend the reality that there is actually no 'fixed' Shakespeare, Goethe or Milton. The experience of translation enables the subconscious of an entire race of people to be 'transculturalized' into another broader and richer linguistic experience that cuts across historical, linguistic and generic boundaries. The attempt here is to discuss the issue of the relevance of translation as being essentially a product of the subconscious level of the human mind. This chapter covers representative literary works in translation mainly a poem of N.N. Kakkad named 'Aparichithan', a short story 'Neypayasam' by Madhavikutty, and an article 'Mathrubhashayilekku Veendum', by N.V. Krishna Warrier.
