The discipline of architecture is a phenomenon that has existed since the beginning of human existence and is constantly evolving. Within the scope of this study, the discipline of architecture has been examined from the perspective of education, and the study aims to discuss the relevant effects of the pandemic in recent years. Architectural education has design studio courses at its centre and the curriculum is structured holistically with other applied and theoretical courses. Studios are active spaces where students engage intellectually and socially, and switch between analytical, synthetic and evaluative ways of thinking in different activities such as drawing, making models or discussing ideas. With Covid-19 pandemic, education has been suspended all over the world as of 2020. After a while, in order not to hamper education, online or hybrid education systems were introduced in all classes. Although architectural education can keep up with the changes and renew itself over the years, it encountered many problems during this radical process. The students, who were in one-to-one contact and bilateral dialogue with the instructor of the course in the studio environment, have not been able to carry out the process of experimenting, thinking, intuiting and doing in the studio together with the instructor which is the cornerstone of architectural education. In this context, the positive and negative situations experienced in the studio classes of the architecture departments during Covid-19 period were examined from the perspective of the studio instructors. This research aims to create a critical perspective on distance and hybrid education through the experience of the studio instructor.

Nowadays, the professional practice is undergoing changes that are affecting the work of architects. Architectural studios and engineering consultancies are reinventing themselves to adapt to social, technological and productive needs. However, despite the professional changes, the training of architects in schools continues to focus on educational models that have grown more and more distant from the professional demands. In view of this, schools of architecture have been forced to revise their programmes to develop teaching methods that enable them to adapt to the current situation. Thus, the Design Studio-considered as the core of education in architecture-needs a reconceptualization in order to change the way architects should learn. Pedagogical approaches such as distance learning and blended learning can help update the concept of the Design Studio and transform it into a new participatory and delocalized learning space.

The architectural design studio, the prevailing form of design education, has resisted opening up to online educational tools and practices. Yet its affinities to the newest theories of learning such as connectivism are many. This paper describes an experimental configuration of multiple learning environments in diverse mediums for an undergraduate design studio at the School of Architecture of the National Technical University of Athens. The aim of the studio's layout transformation has been to explore its physical boundaries and to create a collaborative milieu between peers that facilitated communication and thus, the exchange of information and knowledge.
Generation gap, learning from the experience of compulsory remote architectural design studio
International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education
Physical design studio has been the mainstream method of architectural pedagogy for more than a century. Although the past two decades have brought forth emerging possibilities via advancements in digital communication, Virtual Design Studio (VDS) remained an experimental novelty until 2020. The interruption of face-to-face educational activities saw architecture schools facing a rapid paradigm shift because their studio-centred pedagogy retains intrinsic spatial qualities that are often attributed as critical dimensions of the learning process. This article explores the transition to the virtual design studio in a department of architecture after distance education became mainstream due to the global pandemic. The paper provides a comparison between students’ and lecturers’ points of view regarding different aspects of the virtual design studio. This addresses a potential generational gap concerning digital communication in a case study. A survey was administered to a group of arch...

Architecture education is very important in the education of future architects and is defined by the combination of practical and theoretical coursework. Due to the pandemic conditions, online education is one of the available options for education. which faces many challenges. However, due to the prevalence of virtual education in the world, due to the corona disease in the world and the need for communication between the scientific fields and practical education, it is faced with the adverse effects in the form of numerous challenges and shortcomings. The purpose of this research is to extract concepts and dimensions. And the components of the challenges of online education of architectural design. Methods: This research is practical in terms of purpose. The research method used is a qualitative method, which was done with content analysis and coding of data collected by 12MAXQDA software. Then, from among the challenges based on the sub-components of online education challenges, the coding process is divided into two sections: general challenges; online education and specific challenges; Architectural design is taught online. Findings: Based on the review of 732 free codes in 26 code-oriented categories, 7 main concepts were reached, which include the challenges of the educational environment and educational facilities; the challenge of students' psychology; the impossibility of correction and solving students' problems; weakness in the way professors evaluate students' learning. For architectural design, the lack of understanding of the design concept and the students' ability to analyze and be creative to implement the design, the weak educational program and the content of intensive courses, and the weakness of the electronic infrastructure. Conclusion: According to the findings for these 26 code-based online architectural design training courses, which are based on various and different challenges, and improving its quality will increase the quality of virtual courses and requires a serious look for the training of future architect engineers.
This paper will investigate how digital technologies can influence the teaching of architecture and what will be its impact on both students and instructors and their products. In this paper, I’ll argue that e-learning can substantially help in creating a new paradigm in teaching architecture. It will facilitate the applicability of Virtual Design Studio (VDS) in schools of architecture. This should not be seen as a replacement of the traditional studio but it is a must have facility in today’ schools of architecture. In addition, I’ll examine the value of applying VDS, in an accelerating globalized world, in promoting a more regional understanding of Developmental issues, challenges and opportunities which faces the Arab community in general and the GCC community in specific.

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, which was declared as a pandemic in 2020 by the World Health Organization, many educational institutions around the world started distance education. However, since distance education is an unusual field for the stakeholders of education, this sudden change created a chaos both for institutions in terms of providing the necessary infrastructure and for educators in terms of redesigning instruction techniques and tools. In this article, it is aimed to discuss a distance education course design proposal for basic design course, which is taught generally in the first two semesters within a studio environment at the department of architecture, through a) student opinions that were obtained through an online questionnaire that were conducted at the end of the semester, evaluations made by the authors about b) the process outputs and achievements and c) the tools. The results show that, the distance education course design proposal for the basic design course of the department of architecture, which requires collaboration and interaction between students and instructors, evaluated as being efficient both in terms of the tools and methods used and in terms of creating an online collaborative workspace.
Distance Learning under the Covid-19 Conditions within Architectural Education
CEPS journal, 2022
Distance learning is one of the means of education used in various levels, from primary school to college. However, distance learning in architectural education differs from other disciplines, as architectural education is design-based with predominantly applied courses. As the spring semester of the 2019/20 academic year had to continue online due to the Covid-19 pandemic and it remained uncertain whether or when faceto-face (FtF) education will start till the end of the term, the necessity to focus on online education suddenly raised in architectural faculties. This study aims to start a discussion on how to proceed with online architectural education, focusing on quality, defining the fundamentals, and proposing suggestions within this scope. In order to achieve this aim, research on the evaluation of the existing distance learning platforms of universities, the differences between the implementations of theoretical and applied courses, the advantages and disadvantages of the process are made. For this purpose, a comprehensive literature review on universities that provide fully online, hybrid and conventional (FtF) education throughout the world is conducted, given and discussed in the paper. After the research on ongoing processes, a case study to determine the experiences, opinions and approaches of students and academic staff with the scope of emergency remote teaching is designed and conducted. Together with the findings of the review and the case study, the challenges, strengths and opportunities of online architectural education are discussed and evaluated with a focus on maintaining and raising the quality of the education. In conclusion, suggestions and proposals are made and presented to be applied and developed in architecture faculties' future online education experiences.
