This volume presents the results of three editions of DOTTSS Doctoral and Teacher Training Summer School. The school is an international joint initiative between five universities: University of Ljubljana (Slovenia), University of Turku (Finland), University of Granada (Spain), Boğaziçi University (Turkey) and Tampere University (Finland), as well as University of Eastern Finland prior to Professor Kaisa Koskinen’s transfer to Tampere in 2017. The venue of the school rotates annually between the organizing universities. Since its previous publication in 2016, New Horizons in Translation Research and Education is now hosted under a new publication series, namely Tampere Studies in Language, Translation and Literature. The article presents the seminal influence of translation on the development of Slovene language and culture. A historical overview of major translations in Slovene demonstrates the decisive influence of translation on the development of Slovene language, prose, drama, and poetry. The present state of interlingual exchange in Slovenia is briefly presented, in which translated literatures in certain genres represent more than a half of yearly publications. The article also focuses on another typical feature of Slovene culture that is shared by many other cultures using a language of limited diffusion: Slovene translators predominantly translate out of their native language if they want to meet the demands of the market. Contents Translation Studies already face new tasks in order to take account of and to discuss the changing translation environment, in order to seek new approaches and tools for description, analysis and teaching activities. This volume of selected papers of the conference Bridging Languages and Cultures brings together current viewpoints in Translation Studies, Linguistics, and Intercultural Communication; it provides both specific focus on certain aspects and developments and a more general overview of research landscape. Distinguished authors discuss translation of LSP texts, lexicological and lexicographic modules of bridging history and methodology of Translation Studies, aesthetic and interactional aspects of translation, and intercultural phenomena in the context of translation. The Editors Guntars Dreijers is Associate Professor at Ventspils University of Applied Sciences. Agnese Dubova and Jānis Veckrācis are Assistant Professors at the University. At the Faculty of Translation Studies, they teach various subjects of Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies, including subjects in translation and linguistic pragmatics, academic writing and practical translation.

Internationale Übersetzungswissenschaftliche Konferenz TRANSLATION LANDSCAPES VI The Conference is concerned with the problem of translation in general, both with literary and professional translations. The Conference provides a wide perspective of the translation horizon and is a communication platform for theorists and practitioners. The conference is held in English, German and Polish languages in a plenary session (literary studies, linguistics, specialized languages, culture studies, ethnography). Other languages are also accepted. Die Konferenz richtet sich an alle Interessierten am Problem der allgemeinen, literarischen und Fachübersetzung. Sie basiert auf einer universellen Auffassung des Übersetzungsbegriffs und ist eine Plattform für die Verständigung und den Erfahrungsaustausch sowohl für die Theoretiker als auch für die Praktiker. Die Konferenz erfolgt in Plenarform (Literaturwissenschaft, Sprachwissenschaft, Fachsprachen, Kulturwissenschaft, Ethnografie). Die Konferenzsprachen sind Englisch, Deutsch und Polnisch. Andere Sprachen werden ebenfalls akzeptiert. Konferencja jest skierowana do osób zainteresowanych przekładem ogólnym, literackim, specjalistycznym oraz językami specjalistycznymi. Bazuje na uniwersalnym ujęciu problematyki przekładu. Stanowi platformę wymiany doświadczeń zarówno dla teoretyków, jak i praktyków. Obrady odbywają się w formie plenarnej (literaturoznawstwo, językoznawstwo, języki specjalistyczne, studia kulturoznawcze). Podstawowe języki konferencji to angielski, niemiecki i polski. Możliwe jest także wygłoszenie referatu w innym języku.
Contemporary Approaches to Translation Theory and Practice
This book gathers together, for the first time, the editors of some of the most prestigious Translation Studies journals and serves as a showcase of the academic and geographical diversity of the discipline. The collection includes a discussion on the intralinguistic translation of Romeo and Juliet; thoughts on the concepts of adaptation, imitation and pastiche with regards to Japanese manga; reflections on the status of the source and target texts; a study on the translation and circulation of Inuit-Canadian literature; and a discussion on the role of translation in Latin America. It also contains two chapters on journalistic translation – linguistic approaches to English-Hungarian news translation and a study of an independent news outlet – one chapter on court interpreting in the USA and a final chapter on audio description. The book was originally published as a special issue in 2017 to mark the 25th anniversary of Perspectives: Studies in Translation Theory and Practice
