Incarnate De Spiritu Sancto: Aquinas on the Holy Spirit and Christ's Conception (original) (raw)

The Thomist, 2020

Abstract

What does it mean to say that, "by the Holy Spirit [de Spiritu Sancto]," the only-begotten Son of God was "incarnate of the Virgin Mary [ex Maria Virgine]"? St. Thomas Aquinas offers a scripturally and dogmatically satisfying and coherent account of the Holy Spirit's place in this key mystery. Investigating this theme opens a window into Aquinas's Spirit-Christology, which highlights the importance of the Holy Spirit for Christology while at the same time safeguarding the central place of Christ's identity as the Word, and the consubstantial unity of the Triune God.
