Marimba and the Musical Figuring of Desire and Identity in Semzaba’s Novel Marimba ya Majaliwa

International Review of the Aesthetics and Sociology of Music, 2015

This article discusses the way a musical instrument marimba is figured in relation to social identities and relations in Edwin Semzaba’s novel Marimba ya Majaliwa. It argues that the novel creates an imaginary world in which marimba is a central instrument that acts as an object of mimetic desire between the novel’s hero and his antagonist. So too, the marimba and the marimba competition are used in the novel to performatively construct Tanzanian national identity.
