The medium of transportation facilitates the movement of people, products, and services. It has consistently played a significant role in the expansion of urbanization, industry, and modernization. It has been shown that effective transportation systems are crucial for fostering social cohesion and economic prosperity in a region. India has some rural and urban regions with strong transportation connectivity, but many villages lack well-organized and efficient transportation systems. The present work covers the district's regional development in connection to the road connectivity, its development, and level of transportation. For showing road network connectivity the Graph Theory has been used and the level of transport development has been examined by using aggregate transport score (ATS). The level of regional development has been demonstrated using composite index, which normalizes various socioeconomic factors. Using georeferencing and digitizing, software like ArcGIS facilitates network analysis, processing of spatial data, and the creation of maps. Road transportation was discovered to have a positive relationship with regional development in the district. Key Words: Road Connectivity, Transport development, ATS, Composite Index, Regional

Structural Analysis of Existing Road Networks of Cooch Behar District, West Bengal, India: A Transport Geographical Appraisal

Road has been described as the life-blood of human civilisation. Social interaction and economic prosperity in space have been shaped by the road networks both at intra and inter regional levels. Consequently, it is regarded as one of the most important indices of economic, social and commercial progress of any region. The study area, Cooch Behar District of West Bengal, India ranked 11 out of 19 districts of West Bengal in development indices in spite of its immense historical background. The district does not have any remarkable industrial establishments with the population engaged in subsistence agriculture marked by low yield and productivity. An attempt has been made through the present study to explore the existing pattern and spatial variations of road networks of the study area with the help of structural measures of transportation network. The study reveals that blocks of Cooch Behar district had minimum road density and most of the blocks are characterised by minimum efficiency of road network in terms of connectivity. The efficiency of road network is very low and higher spatial imbalance.

The present study describes the connectivity of road network, level of transport development and its relation with regional development of the district. Graph theory and aggregate transport score (ATS) have been used to determine the level of transport development while composite index has been used to show the level of regional development by normalizing different socio-economic variables in the district. Software like ArcGIS aids in network analysis, to process the spatial data and for map making through geo-referencing and digitization. It was found that road transport is positively correlation with regional development in the district. Index Terms: Connectivity, Transport development, ATS, Composite Index, Regional Development.

SPATIAL STRUCTURE OF ROAD NETWORKS IN WEST BENGAL: AN APPLICATION OF GRAPH THEORY

Transportation is a means to an end; it does not create welfare on its own that is done by final activities for which transport is used (Vickerman, 2001). One major aspect of spatial structure is highlighted in efficiency measure of its transport network. Road network dominates the transport sector in most of the LDCs carrying lion's share of passenger and freight. The quality of the road network, that is, the efficiency of road network measures the cost of the mobility. An efficient and well-developed road network is considered as a factor in the regional development and also as the indicator of the degree of regional development. This paper makes an important distinction between developed and underdeveloped road network, which is often overlooked. In regions with developed road network all the activity centres and settlements (villages and towns) of the region are connected to the road network, whether through a structurally efficient network or not.

Spatial Pattern of Road Transport Connectivity in Puncha Block, Puruliya District, West Bengal

Movement of man and material across spaces is accomplished through some definite channels of transport network. These channels consist of nodes and routes connecting these nodes. On the efficiency and fluency of linkages between the places the advancement of a region depends. The present paper is a humble submission to measure the connectivity pattern with the help of cyclometic number, alpha, beta, gamma index and Aggregate Transportation Score. At the same time it opts to explore the most vulnerable areas with regard to connectivity at Puncha Block of Purulia District, one of the backward Districts of West Bengal. Most of the pockets of the Block represent a very disappointing figure with respect to Connectivity measures. The areal networks are found to be branching. For the upgradation of accessibility the existing tree sort of network should be enhanced into a circuitry network implying maximum connections.

A Profile of Road Transport Development in Howrah District, West Bengal, India

Howrah, the sister city of Kolkata displays a continuous transformation of its urban land use pattern since its inception near about 500 years ago. Transport, being the most significant parameter of urban land use change, depending upon which urban structure develops, is of great importance in this context. Howrah city in Howrah district is well known for its National Railway Terminus which brings and accelerates development of this city since 1854. At present Howrah as a primate city of this district exhibits high dominance and centralization of road based mass transport services which helps in the development of the local linkages system. But a strong contrast can be identified in the regional district level where a real paucity of mass transport services creates severe transport problems and high dependency on para transit services. In the multimodal public transport system of Howrah city, the road based mass transport services are dominated by private sector companies with certain degree of public sector intervention. The varying degree of bus services along with auto-rickshaws and trekker services within Howrah district, between Howrah district and Kolkata and between Howrah and other districts of West Bengal expresses the changing pattern of different levels of interaction among the areas. Due to the changing scenario of the transport services in this city in relation to the district scenario, an attempt has been made to analyze the spatial pattern of road based mass transport development with special reference to bus services and para transit services like auto-rickshaws and trekker services. It is also important to assess how the existing transportation system of Howrah city influences the trafficscape of this region.

Analysis of Road Networks using Geospatial Technology - a case study of Midnapore Municipality, West Bengal

The road network expresses the transport and communication systems of an area. It serves the community of the local people. Hence, transport network analysis is essential for planning and laying a town. The present study aims to integrate the socio-economic infrastructure of an area with the existing road commuting systems. An indicator has been formulated using the multiple-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) approach considering the nearest facility (hospitals) from accident hot spots, a fire brigade station, and the shortest route between tourist spots and the rail station. Road network also plays an important role in lifestyle improvements making road criteria analysis essential in recent times, and several algorithms have been developed to conduct such study. The transport network, especially the road network, largely influences the socio-economic development of a region. Socio-cultural attributes and structures evolve based on the spatial variation of the layout and design of the transport networks. The present study has been done in Midnapore Municipality, Paschim Midnapore, West Bengal, using the Geographic Information System (GIS) which provides an effective decision support system and management solution along with the required cartographic visualization. Community responses have been integrated using the standard geodatabase strategies, including the shortest path evaluation, the closest facility evaluation, and the provider region evaluation with fascinating results to be used in further research.

Integration of urban expansion with hybrid road transport network development within Haldia Municipality, West Bengal

Rapidly growing cities in developing countries like India are facing some concerns such as unplanned and unsystematic urban growth. The port based industrial development plays a pivotal role for growth of urban expansion and transport development over once the agricultural dominant area in Haldia Municipality, West Bengal. This study emphasised on the relationship between urban expansion and transport development using various geospatial and statistical techniques. Land use/cover maps have been prepared in ArcGIS v.10.1 for 2001 and 2018 with the help of Landsat images then road network connectivity was analysed using statistical techniques and GIS environment. Kernel density was used for analysing hybrid road network density. Finally, correlation technique was applied to find out the spatial relationship between the exiting transportation and population. Based on the results, we found the value of coefficient of determination as 0.651 that means transportation development is rigidly controlled by population density. So, urban area was expanded day after day through the huge population pressure over the study area. Moreover, hybrid road transport networks were developed which are well connected to all the fringe areas from the city centre for providing better transport accessibility and facility. But, the planning of urban area through transportation is required to give more attention on proper allocation of others urban services especially for the city people.

Road infrasturcture in economically underdeveloped North-East India: a district level study

Infrastructure development builds the road map for economic growth and social upliftment of a county. Econometric studies indicate a direct relationship between development of physical infrastructure and economic growth. Road infrastructure, in particular, provides a network to facilitate trade, transport, social integration and economic development, especially for an underdeveloped region. The present article is an effort to study the road infrastructure of India's north-east (NE) region, which is one of the underdeveloped regions of the country. The growth of infrastructure in NE, both social and physical, has not kept pace with the rest of the country, leading to widening of disparities. The overall economic situation of NE has been presented in the article. Comparative state-wise analyses of road length, type, category and quality of available roads have been carried out. The dispersion of road density in terms of per thousand population and also per thousand square kilometre of area has been mapped across the NE districts. Geographic information system tool has been used to map the attributes, such as, districtwise road length and percentage of surfaced road available in each district. The study reveals that there exist significant variations among states as well as within different districts of a state. Although these analyses are based on the secondary data set, they make an attempt to map the level of inter-state and intra-state disparity in the region.
