Residents’ Attitude toward Tourism Development: A Sociocultural Perspective

Sustainability, 2017

Host population support for tourism development has attracted the attention of researchers in tourism studies. Given the importance of understanding local community support for tourism development, limitations in understanding their priority and lack of a socio-cultural model of support for tourism, this study attempted to model locals' support for tourism development based on socio-cultural factors in Malaysian Homestay program. Using extensive literature review, a tourism support model was proposed including several hypothesized paths. The proposed socio-cultural research framework predicted the impact of Islamic religiosity, locals' knowledge about tourism, intrinsic motivation factors and community attachment on locals support for tourism development through mediating variables of perceived socio-cultural benefits and costs in Malaysian Homestays. , the model and paths were tested using structural equation modelling and partial least square algorithm (PLS-SEM) with the aid of SmartPLS software. Findings reveal that locals' support for tourism development in Homestay program is a function of perceived socio-cultural benefits and costs perceived by local community and four independent variables of Islamic religiosity, knowledge about tourism, intrinsic motivations, and community attachment.

COMMUNITY PERCEPTION ON TOURISM DEVELOPMENT AND ITS IMPACTS: A STUDY ON PASSIKUDHA, SRI LANKA

The study is mainly to identify the community perception and their involvement in the tourism development activities. Research was carried out at Passikudha, one of the planned tourism development site in Sri Lanka, adopting the mixed methodology. A survey was conducted using a semi structured questionnaire with 251 respondents from the local community. Additionally, in-depth interviews with six community leaders were conducted. The local community of Passikudha tourism resort area consists of 712 families, which was considered for the survey. The findings indicate that more benefits have been brought to the area due to the ongoing tourism development activities, however the local community is not in a position to get the real benefits of the tourism development due to lack of proper education, knowledge, experience, capacity etc. The community bear mixed perception about the ongoing development in the study area. On the other hand, those who get benefits through tourism hold positive perception and attitudes while those who have not received any tangible benefits hold negative attitudes about the tourism development. The results highlighted that, it is necessary to have a well planned awareness program about the community involvement for the ongoing tourism development activities. Therefore, the authorities should concern more about the community awareness and capacity building programs in order to deliver the benefits of tourism development to the local community also to ensure the long term sustainability of the industry.

Socio-Economic Impacts on Local Community through Tourism Development with Special Reference to Heritance Kandalama

Its high growth and development rates bring considerable volumes of foreign currency inflows, infrastructure development, employment generation, regional development, economic multiplier effects and introduction of new management and educational experience actively affect various sectors of economy, which will be positively affected to the social and economic development of the country. However the industry also generates a number of other negative socio-economic and cultural impacts on local communities. Therefore, the study considers the main social and economic impacts on local community trough tourism development in Kandalama area of Sri Lanka. Heritance Kandalama, a star class hotel, commenced its operations in 1994 beside the Kandalama Lake in a picturesque environment. During the construction stage there were many protests against the hotel and may parties claimed that the hotel will pollute the natural and the socio-cultural environment in the area. Finally, the company built an award winning environmental friendly hotel and introduced many programs to deliver benefits to the local community through their CSR activities. The study mainly target to identify the social and economic impacts on local community and their perception towards the tourism development in the neighborhood. The study is adapted the mixed methodology and the data is generated through structured questionnaire survey, personal interviews and discussions. The study identified that community has developed positive attitudes about the tourism development and the community is accepted tourism as a major income source through active and passive participations. The hotel also has taken numerous policy decisions and practices to ensure the delivery of benefits of tourism to the local community. As usually the industry has generated both positive and negative impacts in the area. However, the negative impacts are at a minimum level when compare with the positive impacts. It is suggested that to have more community awareness and education programs in order to obtain positive benefits and to minimize the negative impacts of tourism. Community empowerment and their capacity building is highly important in this context.

Rasoolimanesh, S. M., Roldán, J.L., Jaafar, M. & Ramayah, T. (2017). Factors influencing residents’ perceptions toward tourism development: Testing the differences across rural and urban destinations. Journal of Travel Research, 56(6), 760–775.

This paper compares the effects of factors influencing residents’ perceptions toward tourism development in urban and rural World Heritage Sites (WHS). This study has been conducted in the rural Lenggong and urban George Town WHSs in Malaysia. Partial least squares – structural equation modeling, using a number of recently developed advanced analysis methods, has been used to assess the proposed measurement and structural models, and to compare the relationships between the two groups. The results of this study reveal significant differences between the effects of economic gain and community involvement on residents’ perceptions in rural and urban contexts. However, the findings do not support differences between the effects of community attachment and environmental attitudes on residents’ perceptions. This study makes a significant theoretical contribution by comparing rural and urban WHS residents in the developing world. Furthermore, this study has a number of practical implications for the local authorities.
