Elections in Nigeria: A Contemporary Analysis

Since the third wave of democratisation hit Africa in the early 1990s, Elections in Africa has been anything but free and fair. While the magnitude of electoral malpractices differed from country to country, Nigeria has had a tough time organising credible elections since independence. Except for the 1993 elections, and more recently the 2015 presidential election, elections in Nigeria has been bedevilled with all kinds of malpractices before, during and even after the elections. This book is a review of elections in Nigeria since 1999, with examples drawn from pre-1999 elections in some cases. The chapters contain a mixed bag of robust articles based on qualitative and quantitative approaches. Inherent in this work are a critical review of selected elections, the role of the electoral umpires, the media as election watchdog, and the judiciary as the arbiter of myriad of election petitions that usually accompany elections in Nigeria.

Background Paper on the Governorship and House of Assembly Elections in Nigeria

Nigeria's return to democracy in 1999 happened within the global context of a wave of democratization that saw many autocratic regimes end and electoral democracies begin. Critical domestic circumstances that included the sudden death of military head of state, General Sani Abacha (1993-98), and a resurgent pro-democracy movement created a crucial opening for Nigeria to begin the journey to political transformation. The current democratic dispensation is in its fourth electoral cycle and a culture of citizen engagement has begun to take root. Despite the numerous challenges confronting the institutionalization of a strong democratic ethos, particularly in relation to the conduct of credible and violence-free elections, election management and citizen participation in the electoral process have improved over the years.

Political Crisis and Electoral Malpractices in a Growing Nigeria Democracy

In human society, politics is seen as every day game, individuals or group struggle to dominate over the activities of life. This is why the great Greek philosopher Aristotle saw man as a political animal. This has come to justify that politics started from time immemorial but the method of playing it (politics) among or between individuals and nations varied. In the course of acquisition of power, violence of all kinds seems to occur especially during elections. In the electoral process of a developed country democracy is always generally competitive. There is necessity to define the concepts of our key studies which includes: Electoral malpractices; this is one of the political immoral vices, which always occur in Nigeria politics, these include rigging of election and snatching of ballot boxes. Political crisis is the problems that always occur while conducting elections and this is as a result of electoral malpractices. Growing democracy refers to those states or nations which gained independence after the second world-war.

The 2019 General Election in Nigeria: Examining the Issues, Challenges, Successes and Lessons for Future General Elections

The 2019 General Election is another milestone and a watershed in the efforts of Nigeria towards democratisation. It has been the six consecutive times that General Elections are successfully conducted in the Fourth Republic which has been unprecedented in the history of the country. This work investigated the major issues, challenges, successes and lessons learnt from the Election. It is notable that elections in Nigeria for over fifty (50) years remain a warlike affair and the phenomenon seem to be continuous despite the long experience of democratic practice in the current Republic. The research used both primary and secondary sources of data analysis. The primary sources consist of participant observation, data from the electoral body; the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and reports from observers and civil societies that directly participated in the exercise. The secondary sources include books, journals, internet and other existing literature on the subject matter of study. The data obtained were analysed and discussed using a qualitative approach method where themes and sub-themes were identified and discussed analytically. The research discovered that the 2019 General Election was heralded with several issues, various challenges and some level of success and that there are lessons that are learnt from the process for future General Elections' conduct in the country. The work recommends among other suggestions that for a better General Election in future in the country, some observed avoidable mistakes must be taken care of immediately and that the success part should be strengthened to ensure effectiveness.
