One of the goals of software design is to model a system in such a way that it is easily understandable. Nowadays the tendency for software development is changing from manual coding to automatic code generation; it is becoming model-based. This is a response to the software crisis, in which the cost of hardware has decreased and conversely the cost of software development has increased sharply. The methodologies that allowed this change are model-based, thus relieving the human from detailed coding. Still there is a long way to achieve this goal, but work is being done worldwide to achieve this objective. This paper presents the drastic changes related to modeling and important challenging issues and techniques that recur in MBSD.

Rethinking the use of models in software architecture

Models are used in all kinds of engineering disciplines to abstract from the various details of the modelled entity in order to focus on a specific aspect. Like a blueprint in civil engineering, a software architecture provides an abstraction from the full software system's complexity. It allows software designers to get an overview on the system under development and to analyze its properties. In this sense, models are the foundation needed for software development to become a true engineering discipline.

Perceptions of Software Modeling: A Survey of Software Practitioners

In this paper we analyze the results of a survey on how, when and why some software developers model, and why many prefer not to model. The survey of 113 software practitioners studied the reasons developers chose codecentric versus model-centric software engineering, and also gathered data about the notations and tools used. Key findings include: UML is confirmed as the dominant modeling notation; modeling tools are primarily used for documentation and up-front design with little code generation; modeling tools are also used to transcribe models from other media including whiteboards; and the type and quality of generated code is one of the biggest reported problems.
