Casimiro Monier y sus establecimientos para la práctica de la sociabilidad en el Madrid del siglo XIX (original) (raw)

Casimiro Monier was a French bookseller, editor and businessman who settled in Madrid and played a key role leading a bookshop and reading room. This work aims at increasing the knowledge and appreciation of his figure and his business activity in the city. In the early 1820’s, he was responsible for the creation of one of the first and most prominent reading rooms (calle de la Montera), which was later moved to the Fontana de Oro Inn (Carrera de San Jerónimo), a symbol during the turbulent period of the Trienio Liberal (Liberal Triennium) (1820-1823). From that moment, his business started providing other services (bath houses, etc.) for his customers’ pleasure. This liberal-oriented establishment offered an assortment of newspapers, books and periodicals. It was a meeting point for relevant figures, especially from the political field of that time and remained open until October 1855.
