Information Services & Use
The uses of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and Web environments for creation, treatment and availability of information have supported the emergence of new social-cultural patterns represented by convergences in textual, image and audio languages. This paper describes and analyzes the National Archives Experience Digital Vaults as a digital publishing web environment and as a cultural heritage. It is a complex system-synthesizer of information design options at information setting, provides new aesthetic aspects, but specially enlarges the cognition of the subjects who interact with the environment. It also enlarges the institutional spaces that guard the collective memory beyond its role of keeping the physical patrimony collected there. Digital Vaults lies as a mix of guide and interactive catalogue to be dealt in a ludic way. The publishing design of the information held on the Archives is meant to facilitate access to knowledge. The documents are organized in a dynamic and not chronological way. They are not divided in fonds or distinct categories, but in controlled interaction of documents previously indexed and linked by the software. The software creates information design and view of documental content that can be considered a new paradigm in Information Science and are part of postcustodial regime, independent from physical spaces and institutions. Information professionals must be prepared to understand and work with the paradigmatic changes described and represented by the new hybrid digital environments; hence the importance of this paper. Cyberspace interactivity between user and the content provided by the environment design provide cooperation, collaboration and sharing knowledge actions, all features of networks, transforming culture globally.
Archives' call to Digital Humanities
Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Technological Ecosystems for Enhancing Multiculturality - TEEM 2017, 2017
The availability of digitised cultural heritage content held by archives and other memory institutions improves their visibility, facilitate and increases access to information, allowing new kinds of research of digital heritage, namely Digital Humanities. This study intends to report how Municipal Archives of mainland Portugal are ensuring access to their digitized cultural heritage content. For this purpose, an analysis was held to collect data about online catalogues with digital objects linked to the archival description in 278 Municipal Archives of mainland Portugal. The data revealed that the openness of the primary information sources preserved by the municipal archives, which can be reused by all those who need them and particularly by digital humanists, is still in infancy.
Digital archives: Fostering and enhancing the architectural heritage
2013 Digital Heritage International Congress (DigitalHeritage), 2013
Scientific context Contemporary society looks to the digitizationof the archives and its rapid spread as a catalyst for a profound cultural, social and economic change. The research investigates the process of transformation of cultural institutions, and in particular of architecture and design archives, and explores the opportunities of change induced by the impact of digital technologies and the participatory models of users. It analyzes the significance of archives today, from simple repositories to production and dissemination cultural centers. This work is part of the larger research conducted in the scientific and disciplinary Research Unit, named Design for Cultural Heritage (DeCH), now Design & Culture, in the Design Department of Politecnico di Milano. It has been conducted in continuity with the research project PRIN 2010/12 "The design of cultural heritage through history, memory and knowledge: the immaterial, the virtual, the interactive as a matter of project in time of crisis i " which has been investigating the development and potential of the digital, the virtual features of the web and the application of multimedia tools for the creation of new ways to benefit from cultural heritage.
Archives' call to Digital Humanities: a case study of Portuguese Municipal Archives

ARCHIVES ON THE WEB AND USERS EXPECTATIONS: TOWARDS A CONVERGENCE WITH DIGITAL LIBRARIES
Digital environments aimed at offering services on historical archives should put together domain standards with typical features of digital libraries. The current tendency is often to adopt two separated methodological approaches: standards-compliant archival descriptions (multi-level, multiple-relations based, providing access just by provenance expressed by original titles, material-centric, careless of the interoperability with general search engines), or digital technologies (horizontal, providing access by subject, sensitive to the "aboutness", user-centric, focused on item-level descriptions based on Dublin Core-like models). Some issues are coming more and more to surface: how could a web archival environment face users expectations and what content (and how) may be offered to cultural aggregators? How can move archives on line from the plain delivery of cultural information to the facilitation of a cultural experience? This paper examines most of those issues, the necessary difference between input and output to ensure high quality contents, the upside-down changing role of the professional mediation, the peculiarities of web displays for archival descriptions. Moreover, studies of end-users are crucial to guarantee the profitable investment, although the first purpose of the investment should be end-users' satisfaction. The authors look into those topics by reviewing the international state of the art, and in light of their coordination of a huge user study project as well. It was launched in order to test the prototype of Una Città per gli Archivi, a portal disseminating the results of a several-year project of preservation and valorization of documentary funds of the city of Bologna (Italy). Besides paper archives, the project included photographic and graphic materials, sound and audiovisual recordings.

Cultural Heritage in a Changing World, 2016
The introduction and diffusion of digital technologies have had a tremendous impact on the production, preservation and utilisation of cultural heritage. In Italy, the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism (MiBACT) has undertaken several programs involving the use of digital technology to promote a larger access to cultural heritage, through the collection of metadata on cultural products preserved in the country and the provision of digital cultural products. Digitisation techniques and web infrastructures affect most activities carried out by such institutions: the production of cultural goods, the use and valorisation of cultural heritage, as well as the costs of preservation. This study analyses the digital projects carried out by the MiBACT for the preservation and utilisation of cultural heritage that is managed by public historic archives so as to evaluate their impact on the access to cultural products.
