Automatic Discharger Systems for Refueling (original) (raw)
IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, 1979
Abstract
ABSTRACT Some novel approaches to the problem of electrification of hydrocarbon fuels are examined. Some earlier workers' results are discussed, and the shortcomings of existing theories are highlighted. A requirement for new and improved instrumentation is identified. Two fully instrumented fueling installations which have been constructed at Southampton for experiments on static hazards are described. An automatic active control system which can be used for eliminating charge in fuel by the injection of neutralizing charge has been developed and tested on the full-scale fueling facility. The conception, development, and testing of this apparatus are described. Its use in producing neutral fuel for assessing the individual charge generating properties of various components such as plastic pipe sections is discussed. The development of a novel type of charge density meter which has no moving parts and which has been proposed as the basic transducer for the control system is outlined.
