Translation or transliteration of the theatrical text. Minimalist exercise of Sławomir Mrożek’s short play Karol. An exercise in the translation of the play Karol, written originally by the Polish playwright Sławomir Mrożek, will serve us as a base to study and analyze different problems that arise in translating theatre. The assumption is that the theatrical text creates multiple, intricate, and multilayer discursive frameworks, i.e. scenic text, subtext, dramatic text, and that during the process of “translating” the balance sought in the body of these frameworks seems to “be destroyed”. We can thus perceive the way certain areas appear that in many occasions become insurmountable, first, because of the subtle links between the stage and the text, then, between the text and the word. Following this thought, we enquire if the translational procedures applied to respond to the proposed strategies, and were not a pure and simple transliteration of signs taken from the dramatic convention. The theatrical language (both the dramaturgical and scenic one) usually amalgamate in a complex structure that finely designs an endless number of lateral “semiospheres” (Yuri Lotman) that during the translation process could be seen disrupted as it comes to semiotic and semantic values that the scenic games and procedures are chosen by the author normally embed.
