A study on diversity of butterfly fauna was carried out in the North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST) Campus of Nirjuli, Itanagar; Arunachal Pradesh, India. The habitat was divided into four major categories namely home garden, forest patch, road side plantation and open grassland. A total of 63 species of butterflies belonging to the five families were recorded during the survey and Nymphalidae were the most commonly recorded, accounting for 44% of total species recorded followed by Lycaenidae 17%, Pieridae 16% and Papilionidae 14% of total species and minimum was recorded for Hesperidae 8% (n=5) Maximum 51 species were recorded in the forest patches followed by home garden (46), road side plantation and minimum in open grassland (36). A total of 398 individuals were recorded from the campus with highest abundance in home garden (n=129) followed by open grassland (n=96), forest patch (n=89) and road side plantation (n=84). The diversity was found high in the forest patch (H=3.76) followed by roadside plantation (H=3.68), home garden (H=3.65) and open grassland (H=3.39). Conservation of butterfly fauna in a small landscape particularly in human dominated might be a good model for maintaining optimal habitat within fragments and in that case academic institutional campus with high plant diversity might be a very good option for the conservation of the species.

Thane, a sister city of Mumbai, shows variety of ecosystems that provides suitable habitat for diverse fauna. The study area, "Jnandweepa" (college campus) is located on the edge of thane creek with mangroves on the periphery and well maintained garden with variety of plants species in 13.5 acre area providing natural habitat for biodiversity. In the present study, diversity of butterflies and their resources such as food plants within the college campus were studied. 52 species of butterflies were recorded with Nymphalideae showing dominance over other 4 families with 22 species, followed by Pierideae and Lycinideae with 10 species each, Papilionideae with 7 and Hespirideae with 3 species. The survey of plants showed around 30 species of larval food plants which justifies the diversity of butterflies. Butterflies are the most fascinating group of insects to humankind, often regarded as flagship species. They are the good bio-indicators of the ecosystem and are very sensitive to changes in the environment. They play an important role in food chain and are valuable pollinators in the local environment. Butterflies dependent on specific host plant in their developmental stages and hence their diversity indirectly reflects the plant diversity of a particular area. With this context an investigation was carried out to document and analyze the community structure, richness and diversity of butterflies in forestry college campus, Sirsi, during which 84 butterfly species belonging to six families were recorded by following round walk method through visual observations of their wing color, patterns and also referring to field guides. Butterflies are an extremely important group of colorful insects belonging to Phylum-Arthropoda, under Class-Insecta and order-Lepidoptera. They are highly sensitive to environmental change and sometimes considered bio-indicators of climate and are potential pollinators. This work was aimed at studying the diversity and common behavioral aspects of butterflies. The study was conducted in Habra and around Sree Chaitanya College from February to September 2022. A total of 35 different species under 25 genera belonging to five families were reported. The maximum number of species belonged to the family Nymphalidae. The ethological aspects of some butterflies were studied in detail. Six butterfly species belonging to three families were studied. The butterfly species studied were the tawny coster, plain tiger, common jezebel, common palm fly, common silverline. A specific behavioural pattern like hovering, basking, resting, flight and nectarine was documented. Observation revealed that plain tiger, tawny coster, common silverline spent most of the time resting. The preference of the butterfly species for nectar-collecting plants was also studied. It was observed that, despite having a number of flowering and non-flowering plants in the area, each butterfly species has a specific preference for their nectar plants.

The present study was carried out to understand the butterfly diversity and abundance in M. N. College, Visnagar, Gujarat, India from November 2019 to March 2020. A total of 40 species of butterflies belonging to 29 genera and five families were recorded from the present study. From the observed butterflies, family Pieridae was the most dominant among the five families with 14 species, followed by Nymphalidae comprising of 9 species, Lycaenidae have 9 species, Papilionidae with 5 species and Hesperidae with 3 species. The present study added valuable information on diversity of butterfly fauna and will contribute in developing effective conservation.

Chhattisgarh state has a rich diversity of butterflies with a total of 170 species in its diver's habitat as hilly terrain, plateaus, plains, and agroforest land, including the campuses & backyards in between human colonies. The present study has been carried out in an academic campus of Sant Guru Ghasidas Government Post Graduate College Kurud; district Dhamtari, Chhattisgarh, India. We observed 56 species of butterflies taxonomically placed under five families in which the family Lycaenidae and Nymphalidae have been dominated over the rest three as family Pieridae, Hesperiidae and Papilionoidae. Out of 56 species, nine species were legally protected under Wildlife Protection Act-1972, with six listed under schedule-II and three under schedule-I.

Butterflies are the most tantalizing and beautiful creatures, among the insect group, they are often regarded as flagship species, which are also indicators of ecological changes in their surroundings. Butterflies also hold great aesthetic value for humankind. Their shapes, colors, and patterns have always fascinated humans and are celebrated in art. The commercial value of butterflies has been realized in many countries located along the tropics. The present study aims towards the preliminary survey, documentation, and abundance of butterfly's species in and around Shivagangotri campus, Davangere University, Tholahunase. During the study, a total of 26 species of butterflies are recorded from the 3 sites. These species belong to the 5 families of Lepidoptera. The population of butterfly species belonging to family Nymphalidae (11 species) was found to be predominantly followed by Pieridae (9 species), Papilionidae (4 species), Lycaenidae (1 species) and Hesperiidae (1 species).

Butterflies are one of the important groups of insects which can act as indicators of change in ecosystem. Urbanisation going on around the globe leads to the habitat destruction of these insects. Survival of these butterflies is now under threat. Present survey is focussed on the assessment of the butterfly diversity and its conservation priorities. A total of 12 species of butterflies belonging to four families were identified from the Kongunadu college of arts and campus of Sciences. Butterfly fauna of the campus dominated with Nymphalidae family. Abundance of the butterfly in the campus showed seasonal variations and preferences. The present study focussed to have a checklist of the butterfly population in our campus which will later contribute for planning campus development programmes.

The study has been carried was out in the vicinity of IIT Guwahati campus from June 2016 to May 2017 to ascertain the number of butterfly species present. In the present study, a total number of 54 species of butterflies belonging to 6 (six) families were reported. Among various families of butterflies found, Nymphalidae family was represented by 22 species followed by 10 species of Lycaenidae, 9 species of Pieridae, 5 species of Papilionoidae, 6 species of Hesperidae and Riodinidae family was represented by 2 species. This study is a preliminary study undertaken at the proposed site which can be regarded as one of the significant taxonomical work.
Diversity of Butterflies in Holy Cross College Campus, Nagercoil, India

A preliminary study on the diversity of butterflies was carried out in Holy Cross College campus, Nagercoil, Kanyakumari District, Tamilnadu, India from December 2016 to April 2017using line transect method. A total of 35 species of butterflies belonging to 29 genera, five families and 29 subfamilies were recorded, of which five species having protected status under the Indian Wildlife Act and IUCN schedule. Among the five families, family Nymphalidae represented with 10 genera and 12 species was the most dominant followed by Pieridae (7 genera and 9 species), Lycaenidae (7 genera and 7 species), Papilionidae (4 genera, 7 species) and Hesperiidae (1 genera and 1 species). Plain tiger, Plain sulphur, Common albatross, Psyche, Tiny grass blue and Mottled emigrant were found to be the dominant species.
